Cucumis (Cucurbitaceae) must include Cucumella, Dicoelospermum, Mukia, Myrmecosicyos, and Oreosyce: a recircumscription based on nuclear and plastid DNA data Naturalis
Schaefer, H..
Recent molecular studies have revealed that the genus Cucumis in its current circumscription is paraphyletic. To become monophyletic, Cucumis must include five genera of the subtribe Cucumerinae, namely Cucumella, Dicoelospermum, Mukia, Myrmecosicyos, and Oreosyce, already regarded as closely related by earlier workers based on morphology. The 19 species in the five genera are here formally transferred to Cucumis, resulting in 14 new combinations, two changes in status, and three new names (Cucumis indicus, C. kirkbrideana, and C. oreosyce). A description of the genus and a key to its 52 species are given, and the subgenera and sections are recircumscribed to reflect monophyletic groups. Subgenus Humifructus, with a haploid chromosome number of 12,...

BALDIN,EDSON L.L.; LARA,FERNANDO M..

Evolutionary dynamics of Cucurbita argyrosperma from the Mesoamerican domestication center using SSR molecular markers PAB
Priori,Daniela; Villarreal,Daniel Zizumbo; Ek,Víctor Manuel de Jesús Canché; Limones-Briones,Verónica; Barbieri,Rosa Lía.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the evolutionary dynamics of the wild-weedy-domestic gene pool of Cucurbita argyrosperma squash by estimating the levels of genetic diversity and gene flow in the putative area of its domestication. Nine populations were collected, and DNA was extracted from young leaves harvested separately from approximately 20 individuals in each population. The DNA fragments were amplified with eight pairs of SSR primers and separated by electrophoresis in 5% denaturing polyacrylamide gels. Genetic diversity and the amount of gene flow were estimated in the populations, and Bayesian grouping was used to determine the levels of gene infiltration and probability of ancestry. The ethnobotanical exploration indicated...

Induced-feeding bioassays for detection of Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal activity against Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera) PAB
Sauka,Diego Herman; Monella,Rodrigo Horacio; Benintende,Graciela Beatriz.
The objective of this work was to establish and test the induced-feeding bioassay in order to detect Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal activity against Epilachna paenulata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Larvae were induced to swallow high concentrations of spore-crystal suspensions of seven exotic and 30 Argentine B. thuringiensis strains. The great majority of strains showed no toxicity to E. paenulata larvae, and observed mortality was lower than 30%. Induced-feeding bioassay is feasible, and should be used for prospecting strains that produce right combinations of Cry proteins needed to an efficient pest control.

Temperature and dosage dependent suppression of damping-off caused by Rhizoctonia solani in vermicompost amended nurseries of white pumpkin: (with 3 tables & 2 figures) Phyton
Rivera,MC; Wright,Eduardo R; López,MV; Fabrizio,MC.
It is generally accepted that composts have the potential to provide biological control of plant diseases. However, there has been little research on the use of vermicomposts for the same purpose. The aim of this paper was to evaluate a vermicompost suppressiveness in nurseries of white pumpkin infested with Rhizoctoniasolani. Two assays were carried out at 22 ± 2 °Cand 15 ± 3 °C, with increasing proportions of compost in the substratum. Seedlings with damping-off or incipient crown rot, as well as those that did not emerge as expected for the germination power, were considered diseased. Vermicompost's effectiveness in suppressing the disease depended on dosage and temperature.

Sohrabikertabad,S.; Ghanbari,A.; Mohassel, Mohamad,H.R.; Mahalati,M.N.; Gherekhloo,J..
Smellmelon, an annual invasive weed of soybean production fields in the north of Iran, reproduces and spreads predominately through seed production. This makes seed bank survival and successful germination essential steps in the invasive process. To evaluate the potential of Smellmelon to invade water-stressed environments, laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the effect of desiccation and salinity at different temperatures on seed germination and seedling growth of Cucumis melo. Seeds were incubated at 25, 30, 35 and 40 ºC in the darkness in a solution (0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6, -0.8, 1 and 1.2 MPa) of a salt (NaCl), and in a solution (0, -2, -4, -6, -8, -10, -12 bar) of PEG-6000 (Polyethylene glycol), in two separate experiments. The results...

Medeiros,Marcelo Gurgel; Silva Neto,José Sisenando de Sênna; Oliveira,Giordanio Bruno Silva; Torres,Salvador Barros; Silveira,Lindomar Maria da.
ABSTRACT Maturation of seeds involves a systematic sequence of physical and physiological alterations observed from fecundation until they become independent of the mother plant. These alterations comprehend a set of steps which prepare them for a successful germination in the future, characterized by the synthesis and accumulation of reserves. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the development and physiological quality of seeds of L. cylindrica accessions during maturation. Fruits of L. cylindrica accessions were harvested from the 10th day after anthesis (DAA) until the 50th DAA, at 10-day intervals. In each harvest, fruit fresh weight was determined, and then the seeds were manually extracted and subjected to the following evaluations: 100-seed weight,...
