Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings. |

Many birds in breeding seasons engage in vigorous dawn singing that often turns to a prominent chorus. We examined dawn chorus variation of avian assemblages in a tropical montane forest in Taiwan and tested the hypothesis that onset sequence is affected by eye sizes, foraging heights, and diet of birds. Chorus onset and duration varied between sampling months, but generally peaked in the prime breeding season. Overall dawn chorus length increased with, but mean duration per species was negatively correlated with, species richness. The inter-correlation among trait variables in phylogenetic independent contrasts was calculated and examined. Both foraging height and relative eye size were selected as positively explanatory factors, but no dietary effects... |

Eleven ecomorphological attributes and diet of seventeen juvenile fish species were examined to test the hypothesis that morphological patterns determine resource uses in estuarine habitats. Species were separated according to the apparatus to food capture and habitat use (benthic or pelagic) in three different groups: (1) a group with depressed fish body, strong caudal peduncle and enlarged pectoral fins; (2) a second group laterally flattened with a wide protruding mouth, and (3) a third group strongly flattened with small pectorals fins. The following six trophic groups were organized based on prey categories: Zooplanktivores, Benthivores, Omnivores, Detritivores, Macrocarnivores and Insectivores. Significant results (PERMANOVA) between ecomorphological... |

As a general rule, sharks and rays play an important role in the energy exchanges among higher trophic levels of the marine food chain and some of them, with an important impact as piscivorous predators. Squalus acanthias (Squalidae) and Raja flavirostris (=Dipturus chilensis )(Rajidae), are two elasmobranchs with high apparition frequencies in the SW Atlantic, in the coastal and demersal fishing trawls, co-existing and predating on the principal stocks of bony fish there located, especially the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). Both species could be transformed into alternative fishing resources, even though they are not currently commercially developed as such. The knowledge on their biology, given in great detail, will provide information for a... |

This study determined the effect of different shrimp head meal (SHM) levels (0, 5, 15, 25 and 30%) in practical diets for Caribbean white shrimp juveniles Litopenaeus schmitti (0.29 ± 0.0025 g). A totally randomized experimental design was carried out under laboratory conditions during 54 days. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in survival of shrimps in all treatments evaluated. This result indicated that SHM included at 5, 15 and 25% in diet promoted growth. The relation of SHM inclusion level in diet with final weight (FW), food conversion rate (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were described by the following quadratic equation: FW = 0.8023 + 0.0604 S - 0.0018 S2, 2 =0.81; FCR = 8.0019 - 0.6081 S + 0.0164 S2, R2 =0.82 and PER =... |

There is a great interest in the growout of spiny lobster postlarva captured in the wild. This activity has been developed rapidly in Asia and especially in Vietnam. However, lack of appropriated formulated diets remains the main constrain to the sustainable expansion of this activity worldwide. Until now, best growth rates have been obtained with the use of high inclusion of krill meal and/or krill hydrolysates which are expensive. However, squid is today avoided as food ingredient due to low digestibility reported. Also, fresh squid has been demonstrated to produce poor growth performance in temperate lobsters, but there is no report for P. argus fed exclusive on fresh squid. This work examines the effect of fresh squid on growth of P. argus... |
