The change of the political Hungarian regime in 1990 affected deeply the economy of the country. This change made effects in each national branch, thus in the agriculture, as well. A lot of new companies dealing with agricultural production and trading has also been established in these years. Since the early '90s a lot of EU support programmes were available targeting these enterprises and providing them to strengthen their competitiveness. One of these programmes was the PHARE IPP Project for the subsidisation of the agricultural investments (between 1996-1998). The University of Debrecen was involved in the implementation, monitoring and assessment process of this project. Based on the results and suggestions of the university, new supporting elements... |

In the Beef CRC, Sustainable Beef Profit Partnership (BPP) teams meet regularly to measure their current performance, set targets for future productivity increases, and use a profitability framework to assess the potential impact of improvements, innovations and new technologies in their beef businesses. Their decisions and actions are based on the Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) process. Capacity building and partnership outcomes are also assessed, and the BPP teams are supported with appropriate tools and resources. In this paper the achievements of the project to date are assessed against the project targets and issues in implementation of the project are discussed. |

Technology adoption in the Australian beef industry has been low and slow compared to that in the intensive livestock and cropping industries. Adoption needs to be higher and faster to fully capture the benefits from new beef genetic and other technologies. The principles of rapid improvement and innovation, and accelerated adoption, provide an innovative solution to this problem. In the Beef CRC, Sustainable Beef Profit Partnership (BPP) teams meet regularly to assess their current performance, set targets for future productivity increases, and use a profitability framework to assess the potential impact of new technology in their beef businesses. Their thinking, decisions and actions are based on the principles and process of Continuous Improvement and... |

This study focuses on hedging effectiveness defined as the proportionate price risk reduction created by hedging. By mathematical and simulation analysis we determine the following: (a) the regression R2 in the hedge ratio regression will generally overstate the amount of price risk reduction that can be achieved by hedging, (b) the properly computed hedging effectiveness in the hedge ratio regression will also generally overstate the amount of risk reduction that can be achieved by hedging, (c) the overstatement in (b) declines as the sample size increases, (d) application of estimated hedge ratios to non sample data results in an unbiased estimate of hedging effectiveness, (e) application of hedge ratios computed from small samples presents a significant... |

The objective of this paper was to analyze the risk protection provided by the futures contracts traded at CBOT (Chicago Board of Trade) at different delivery months to Brazilian Soybean hedgers. The empirical approach adopted was the estimation of hedging effectiveness between every Brazilian production state and the CBOT futures contracts. The results showed that the contracts for delivery in the second semester are more effective, mainly those for delivery in July and August. Moreover, supply shocks in the U.S. can make even the contracts for delivery in November and January to be very effective because of stronger procurement for Brazilian soybeans. The results also show that hedging effectiveness is larger near export harbors, as they were the cases... |

This paper presents a framework for investigating the intersection of collective action and gender; i.e. how gender-oriented analysis can foster more effective collective action in the context of agriculture and natural resource management and how collective action can be used as a vehicle for gender equity. We begin with definitions of the key concepts and then present three entry points for a gendered analysis of collective action-motivations, effectiveness, and impact on gender equity- vis-à-vis the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework (Oakerson 1992; Ostrom 1991). At the heart of this framework is the action arena, which is shaped by a host of initial conditions, including asset endowments, vulnerabilities, and legal and governance... |

The emergence of inflation targeting can be traced back to the 90’s when first countries started forming a new policy strategy aimed at price stabilisation with „real” inflation targeters using explicit numerical targets and some applying a similar strategy with implicit determinations. The monetary policy framework has been endowed with rich theoretical and practical content but an interesting real question remains unanswered: how recent appliers can cope with a number of unaccomplished tasks in model-building and implementation. It is the most exciting challenge for transition economies how to reconcile institutional changes with real and nominal convergence. The solution of this issue provides an ample field for research and economic policy debates. |

This paper reviews the ecological literature published during the last 15 years on pollination and seed dispersal by lizards, in order to determine the possible effects of these animals on plant reproduction. This review is only limited to these years because articles on plant-lizard interactions during this period have used more rigorous experimental approaches than those made previously. All compiled data were analyzed considering the conceptual framework provided by the quantity and quality components of pollination and seed dispersal (i.e., effectiveness), since this information is essential to have an idea of the relative contribution of animals to plant fitness. Results showed that 34 species of lizards feed on nectar and fruits of plants. While... |

Because of their potential for N2 biological fixation, legumes are an alternative source of nitrogen to crops, and can even replace or supplement mineral fertilization. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to evaluate temporal patterns of velvet bean (Mucuna aterrima) green manure release of nitrogen to rice plants, and to study the fate of nitrogen from velvet bean in rice cultivation. The isotopic dilution methodology was used. Treatments consisted of a control and 10 incubation periods of soil fertilized with 15N-labeled velvet bean (0, 20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, and 240 days). The plant material was previously chopped, sifted (10 mm mesh sieve) and oven-dried (65ºC). Incubation of the plant material (2.2 g kg-1 soil) was initiated by the... |

This study evaluated the effectiveness of two HAART regimens concomitant to rifampicin based tuberculosis (TB) treatment. Patients with TB/HIV diagnosis followed at the TB program between June 2000 and March 2005 were prospectively evaluated. The different HAART regimens in antiretrovirals (ARV) treatment naïve and ARV experienced patients were compared. The effectiveness of HAART was defined as a VL <80 copies/mL from month 4 to month 10 after TB treatment. One hundred and forty-two patients were included. Among these, 68 (47%) were treatment naïve and 76 (53%) previously exposed. Odds ratio (OR) in naïve patients treated with efavirenz (EFV) based regimen (n=42) compared to ritonavir/saquinavir (RTV/SQV) based regimen (n=26) was 8.0 (CI=1.67-38.35,... |
