Zapf, Katja; Damme, Klaus.

Factors affecting profitability of organic farms (OF0155) Organic Eprints
Institute of Rural Sciences,.
Financial Factors The importance of price premiums for profitability has been clearly established for cropping farms. The lack of availability of price premiums for livestock products means that the importance of price premiums in livestock systems to overall financial success has not been established. There is some indication that the success of organic farms is likely to depend on the successful management of internal resources; the diversity of the farming business might aid this, but no studies have established any clear indicators or relationships. The total variable costs might give some indication and would be expected to be low where the internal utilisation of non-marketable goods, such as fertility, nutrients and forage, is efficient....

Financial success of organic farms in Germany Organic Eprints
Nieberg, Dr. Hiltrud; Offermann, Dr. Frank.
The conversion to organic farming is financially rewarding for many farmers in Germany. The majority of the organic farms make a profit above that of comparable conventional farms. A comparison of successful with less successful farms, measured by the average difference in ‘Farm Net Value Added’ to comparable conventional farm groups, highlights that the success of the conversion is less dependent on structural and site-specific factors than on the management ability of the farmers – above all in the area of marketing

Organic large scale dairy farming – a model study of the effect of stocking rate and distance from dairy facilities to farm land on productivity, nutrient balance and economic result Organic Eprints
Kristensen, T.; Tvedegaard, N.; Kristensen, I.S..
Organic livestock farms, at least in the northern part of Europe, are dominated by rather specialized units with production based on only one type of livestock, as dairy cows. The specialization is followed by a steady increase in size of the production unit, both in number of livestock and area belonging to the farm. In Denmark has the average organic dairy farm changed from 83 cows and 100 ha in 2000 to 136 cows and 172 ha in 2010; also production per cow has increased in this period from 6825 kg milk annually to 8100 kg in 2010. Such rather large changes over a decade often results in layout of the farm with long distance from the dairy facilities to the farm land. In organic dairy farming this is especially challenging as the dairy herd need to have...

Marktanalyse Öko-Hopfen 2012 – Deutschland, Europa, Welt Organic Eprints
Weihrauch, Florian; Meier, Heinrich.

Economic aspects of the application of different organic materials as N-sources in organic production of lettuce Organic Eprints
Cabilovski, dipl ing Ranko; Manojlovic, Prof Maja; Bogdanovic, Prof Darinka; Bavec, Prof Martina.
In a field experiment on a farm registered for organic production, we studied the effect of the application of different organic materials (OM): farmyard manure (FYM), guano (G), soybean seed (S), forage pea seed (P) on lettuce yield. Besides yield, we also analyzed the economic profitability of the application of different OM. Fresh lettuce yield was significantly higher with OM treatments than with the treatments without fertilization. The highest yield was obtained with the FYM treatment (43.7 t ha-1), and the lowest with the application of P (42.0 t ha-1). The highest additional profit was obtained with the FYM treatment (1123 EUR ha-1) and the lowest with the application of P (475 EUR ha-1).

Profitability and policy dependency of organic farms in selected European countries Organic Eprints
Nieberg, Dr. Hiltrud; Offermann, Dr. Frank; Thobe, Petra; Zander, Dr. Katrin.
This paper provides an analysis of the impact of support payments on the profitability of organic farms in Europe under changing policy environments, using different data bases and different methodologies. The analysis shows that organic farming has proven to be a financially attractive alternative to conventional farming for many farms in Europe. Organic farming payments are important for the economic situation in most European organic farms. In the public debate on the policy framework for organic farming, the emphasis is often on specific regulations and support programmes for organic farming. However, in the EU the general framework of the Common Agricultural Policy is one of the main determinants of the relative competitiveness of organic farming. The...

Organic livestock farming systems in the Massif Central: evolution (2008-2011) and analysis of the technical and economic performances and drivers Organic Eprints
Veysset, Patrick; Tauriac, R; Benoit, M.; Belvèze, J; Patout, O; Reuillon, J.-L.; Morin, E; Vallas, M.
The “Organic Farming Massif Central” hub and fifteen partners lead a program on sustainability and on the technical and economic operation of OF livestock systems in the Massif Central. This systemic and multi-year study (2008-2011) is based on data from a constant sample over four years, from 56 farms comprising four types of products: cattle and sheep, dairy and meat. Over 4 years, the technical and economic results are quite stable, and at a good level, but with great variability inter-farms. With lower labor productivity, but with a more diversified crop rotation, a good food self-sufficiency and good technical skills, the farms with the highest income get an income more than four times higher than the farms with the lowest income .

Mangelnde Datenverfügbarkeit als Hemmnis für passgenaue Optimierung der Proteinversorgung von Monogastriern Organic Eprints
Blume, Leonie; Hoischen-Taubner, Susanne; Kötter-Jürß, Martin; Löning, Jan; Renger, Anja; Vogt, Lukas; Sundrum, Albert.

Zander, Dr Katrin; Deblitz, Dr Claus.
The comparison of production costs in selected West and East European countries will give a first idea of possible international trade relationships in the organic beef sector. Via selection of typical farms in five countries, it can be shown that there are lower production costs in the Czech Republic. Nevertheless they are not as pronounced as it could have been expected. Differences in labour productivity are supposed to be the main reason for that. On the other hand the prices for organic beef are much higher in the West European countries, so that for East European farmers and processors a production and export incentive does exist. But for the time being, the organic processing sector is almost completely missing. The establishment of a processing...

Lakner, Sebastian; Wilken, Marlene.
