Ingestion, growth and metamorphosis of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, larvae were studied under controlled conditions of food density and temperature using a combination of a flow-through rearing system and a hydrobiological monitoring device. In a first experiment larvae were exposed to three different phytoplankton densities (12, 20 and 40 cells μl-1) while in a second trial larvae were reared at five different temperatures (17, 22, 25, 27 and 32°C). Both food concentration and temperature significantly affected the larval physiology throughout the entire development from D-veliger to young spat. Larvae survived over a wide range of both environmental parameters with high survival at the end of experiments. The feeding functional response... |

The main objective of this study is the valorisation of by-products coming from processed tuna (Thunnus albacares). Therefore, enzymatic hydrolysis was selected, using an industrial large spectrum protease (Protamex). In a first phase, hydrolyses of these by-products (heads, tails, viscera) were carried out for long periods of time (12h) in order to establish the kinetics of the proteolysis of those different by-products and to obtain the approximate composition of the different resulting fractions and to determine the conditions which would allow the valorisation of these fractions. In a second phase the valorisation in animal nutrition (shrimp culture) and in human nutrition (fish sauce) of the fractions coming from the hydrolysis of the head of tunas... |

110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify. |

Background Life in the darkness of caves is accompanied, throughout phyla, by striking phenotypic changes including the loss or severe reduction in eyes and pigmentation. On the other hand, cave animals have undergone constructive changes, thought to be adaptive, to survive in this extreme environment. The present study addresses the question of the evolution of growth in caves, taking advantage of the comparison between the river-dwelling and the cave-dwelling morphs of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus. Results A sclerochronology approach was undertaken to document the growth of the species in these two very distinct habitats. Scales from 158 wild Astyanax mexicanus specimens were analyzed from three caves (Pachón, Tinaja and Subterráneo) and two... |

Industrial potentialities related to biotechnology of microalgae are examined, highlighting a wide spectrum of applications which concern principally nutrition, health, environment and energy. The french situation of research on microalgae, especially at Ifremer, is assessed, showing that the main axis are fine chemistry, aquaculture, environment, bio-process engineering. It covers the majority of the applications, but leaves in shade certain important aspects such as human food and CO2 fixation. Concerning the general approach, some significant improvements can be expected from a more accurate control of bacteriological and genetic quality of cultures. About the industrial aspects, a national initiative seems in progress. The variety of potential... |

In a recent report by risk assessment experts on the identification of food safety priorities using the Delphi technique, foodborne viruses were recognized among the top rated food safety priorities and have become a greater concern to the food industry over the past few years. Food safety experts agreed that control measures for viruses throughout the food chain are required. However, much still needs to be understood with regard to the effectiveness of these controls and how to properly validate their performance, whether it is personal hygiene of food handlers or the effects of processing of at risk foods or the interpretation and action required on positive virus test result. This manuscript provides a description of foodborne viruses and their... |

This study, carried out from 1995 to 1997, within the framework of "Le Havre" harbour extension project, concerned halieutic populations and the characterization of a coastal nursery in the oriental part of the Seine bay and the Seine estuary . The main objective was to describe the specific and demographic composition of marine populations and their spatio-temporal distribution, and so assess the biological and halieutic role of this area. This study also included a research about the dietary needs of fish juveniles living in the estuary. Autumn and winter surveys results show that the estuary and area under direct influence are the richest from a biological and halieutic point of view. The mouth estuary isthe richest area in terms of diversity of... |

Several sea bass-rearing experiments were performed from hatching trough metamorphosis. The rearing units employed were 500 1 polyester tanks, where flow rate and temperature of seawater, light and suitable food (rotifer and artemia) were controlled. Stock density ranged between 50 and 100 larvae per liter. Individuals held in tanks with internal black walls developed faster and had a greater survival rate than those in white tanks. This suggests that a better contrast between preys and background assists the larvae to see food organisms more clearly. The sea bass larvae search for food is based only in vision and not trought mechanoreceptors or chemoreceptors. It was very difficult to evaluate the light intensity (50-5000 lux) influence on feeding,... |

This report compiles 17 short and illustrated syntheses concerning the natural strategies of reproduction and the artificial control of the reproductive process for the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas, the mussels, Mytilus edulis and My ti/us galloprovincialis, the scallop, Pecten maximus. An additional syntheses is presented, as a comparison within molluscs, which are the main research topics at IFREMER concerning the artificial control of the reproductive processes in Marine Fish. Three main subjects are documented : 1. the ecophysiology of the natural period of reproduction in the wild, 2. the methods developed in the hatcheries for the artificial control of the reproductive periods, the gametes collection and the... |

A bibliographic database of scientific papers published by authors affiliated to research institutions worldwide, especially focused in Europe and in the European Atlantic Area, and containing the keywords “microalga(e)” or “phytoplankton” was built. A corpus of 79,020 publications was obtained and analyzed using the Orbit Intellixir software to characterize the research trends related to microalgae markets, markets opportunities and technologies that could have important impacts on markets evolution. Six major markets opportunities, the production of biofuels, bioplastics, biofertilizers, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, and two fast-evolving technological domains driving markets evolution, microalgae harvesting and extraction technologies... |

Propolis shows biological properties such as antibacterial action. This bee product has a complex chemical composition, which depends on the local flora where it is produced. Salmonella serovars are responsible for human diseases that range from localized gastroenteritis to systemic infections. The aim of the present study was to investigate the susceptibility of Salmonella strains, isolated from food and infectious processes, to the antibacterial action of Brazilian and Bulgarian propolis, as well as to determine the behavior of these bacteria, according to the incubation period, in medium plus propolis. Dilution of ethanolic extract of propolis in agar was the used method. Brazilian and Bulgarian propolis showed an antibacterial action against all... |

Propolis antibiotic action has been widely investigated. This assay was carried out in order to observe the in vitro antibacterial activity of propolis against Salmonella enteritidis isolated from food and Salmonella typhimurium isolated from human infections. Propolis was collected by Apis mellifera in two regions of Brazil (Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte State; and Urubici, Santa Catarina State). Both strains survival percentage decreased with time of incubation in Ethanolic Extracts of Propolis (EEP), demonstrating bactericidal effect after 24 hours. It was also observed that EEP from Mossoró was more effective than that from Urubici. The control of the propolis solvent - 70% ethanol - was less effective than EEP, showing only a bacteriostatic effect. We... |
