Influence of food density and temperature on ingestion, growth and settlement of Pacific oyster larvae, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Ingestion, growth and metamorphosis of Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, larvae were studied under controlled conditions of food density and temperature using a combination of a flow-through rearing system and a hydrobiological monitoring device. In a first experiment larvae were exposed to three different phytoplankton densities (12, 20 and 40 cells μl-1) while in a second trial larvae were reared at five different temperatures (17, 22, 25, 27 and 32°C). Both food concentration and temperature significantly affected the larval physiology throughout the entire development from D-veliger to young spat. The main objective of this study is the valorisation of by-products coming from processed tuna (Thunnus albacares). Therefore, enzymatic hydrolysis was selected, using an industrial large spectrum protease (Protamex). In a first phase, hydrolyses of these by-products (heads, tails, viscera) were carried out for long periods of time (12h) in order to establish the kinetics of the proteolysis of those different by-products and to obtain the approximate composition of the different resulting fractions and to determine the conditions which would allow the valorisation of these fractions. Determination of gender in the pearl oyster pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer

The pearl industry in French Polynesia is based on exploitation of natural stocks of the black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera); it generates an annual turnover of 90 million euros. Improvements in pearl quality need genetic studies to improve the populations. This pearl oyster is a protandric species, where the sex-ratio normally is biased towards males. There is an increasing interest in gender control to find the mechanisms to augment female proportions for management purposes. Influence de la température sur la physiologie de l'huître Crassostrea ArchiMer

After four weeks' stabulation, at temperatures ranging from 30°C to 10°C for a given level of food (2.10 cells of Chaetoceros calcitrans.1(-1) ), a study of the growth and evolution of the biochemical contents of the oyster Crassostrea gigas showed a negative effect of high (30°C) and low (10°C) temperatures on growth; levels of total glucid and glycogen were inversely proportional to temperature and related to gametogenesis. At the same time measurements of the filtration rate, respiration and food consumption done at different levels of food (10(6) to 8.10(7) cells.1(-1) showed a better adaptation of the oysters to 20°C after one month.

Oyster adenytate energy charge: response to levels of food ArchiMer

Adenylatc Encrgy Charge (AEC) values of Crassostrea gigas (9 and 18 months old) cultured in ponds in Marennes-Oléron Bay (Atlantic coast, France) are reported. Two ponds were loaded with two different initial oyster biomasses in order to obtain different food conditions. The growth of oysters was different in the two ponds which corroborated the effectivences of attaining different food conditions. AEC level was different depending on the pond and was therefore related to food availability per unit oyster biomass. Isolement et identification de vibrions halophiles d'une station experimentale de mariculture ArchiMer

110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify.

The mahimahi, Coryphaena hippurus , has excellent potential for aquaculture due to its fast growth (2 kg at 6 months, 9 kg at 1 year), good food conversion efficiency (30%, wet weight), high fecundity with natural captive spawns (200,000 eggs/female/2 days year round for a 1 year old female), and high price (US$ 9.00/kg wholesale in Hawaii).

Background Life in the darkness of caves is accompanied, throughout phyla, by striking phenotypic changes including the loss or severe reduction in eyes and pigmentation. On the other hand, cave animals have undergone constructive changes, thought to be adaptive, to survive in this extreme environment. The present study addresses the question of the evolution of growth in caves, taking advantage of the comparison between the river-dwelling and the cave-dwelling morphs of the Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus. The japanese palourde Venerupis semidecussata was reared in the Bay of Brest, using hatchery reared spat. Experiments were performed with individuals of lenght 2 to 10 mm raised in a nursery, using raceways with slow running water enriched with unicellular algae, And also with individuals of lenght 8 to 20 mm raised at sea in suspended culture. Adaptation of digestive enzymes to dietary protein, carbohydrate and fibre levels and influence of protein and carbohydrate quality in Penaeus vannamei larvae (Crustacea, Decapoda) ArchiMer

Activity of digestive enzymes (trypsin, chymotrypsin and amylase) was studied in relation with food in Penaeus vannamei larvae first stages. Microparticles containing casein involved the decrease of soluble protein content and enzyme activities. Specific trypsin activity but not chymotrypsin was correlated (p<1%) to casein level between 10 and 60% in microparticles. Cellulose fibres in food seemed to have little effect on digestive enzymes. Starch, between 1 and 20% in microparticles, had no influence on specific amylase activity. The effect of different feeding conditions were also tested on growth. Several sea bass-rearing experiments were performed from hatching trough metamorphosis. The rearing units employed were 500 1 polyester tanks, where flow rate and temperature of seawater, light and suitable food (rotifer and artemia) were controlled. Stock density ranged between 50 and 100 larvae per liter. Individuals held in tanks with internal black walls developed faster and had a greater survival rate than those in white tanks. This suggests that a better contrast between preys and background assists the larvae to see food organisms more clearly. The sea bass larvae search for food is based only in vision and not trought mechanoreceptors or chemoreceptors. Propolis antibiotic action has been widely investigated. This assay was carried out in order to observe the in vitro antibacterial activity of propolis against Salmonella enteritidis isolated from food and Salmonella typhimurium isolated from human infections. Propolis was collected by Apis mellifera in two regions of Brazil (Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte State; and Urubici, Santa Catarina State). Both strains survival percentage decreased with time of incubation in Ethanolic Extracts of Propolis (EEP), demonstrating bactericidal effect after 24 hours. It was also observed that EEP from Mossoró was more effective than that from Urubici.
