Az élelmiszer-ipari vállalkozások környezeti teljesítménye és a pénzügyi eredmények AgEcon
Deak, Zsuzsanna; Hajdu, Istvanne.
A társadalmi értékrendben alárendelt szerepet játszó környezetvédelmi gondolkozásra – reklámérték híján – a média mérsékelten hat. Ez...

Product development in the European and overseas food industry AgEcon
Balogh, Sandor.
In the present study various product development trends in the food industry are reviewed with the main focus on convenience, organic and functional foods. Also highlighted are differences between the U.S. and Europe in terms of consumer habits and food supply trends. Through exploring the reasons behind differences in the extent of product innovation, the author illustrates the different role convenience products have in the US and European markets. Also revealed is the relationship linking convenience products, gluttony, and obesity. In the USA a third generation of convenience products has already appeared with the dual aim of delivering convenience and health. Although in Europe consumption “philosophy” accepts the importance of convenience, greater...

Briz, Julian; Arribas, Nuria; Garcia Martinez, Marian; Briz, Teresa; de Felipe, Isabel.
This paper presents the results of a large-scale study in the Spanish F&DI aimed to identify the motivators, perceived costs, and benefits of implementing ISO 9000 standards. Results indicate the increasing importance of ISO 9000 standards as a strategic tool in the Spanish F&DI with an increasing number of F&D companies seeking ISO 9000 certification. Despite being a recent strategic option among Spanish F&D companies latest figures show a total of 1,754 firms being ISO 9000 certified (a significant increased from a total of 4 firms in 1993)

Marginal Intra-Industry Trade and Adjustment Costs in the Hungarian Food Industry AgEcon
Ferto, Imre.
Recent developments in intra-industry trade (IIT) literature focus on the relationships between IIT and adjustment costs associated with changes in trade pattern. The effects of trade liberalisation depend, inter alia, on whether trade is of an inter-industry or intra-industry nature. The belief that IIT leads to lower costs of factor market adjustment, particularly for labour, gives rise to the smooth-adjustment hypothesis Hungarian agricultural trade was liberalised via WTO agreement and some regional trade integration agreement (Association Agreement, CEFTA). It is reasonable assume that these partial trade liberalisation should have an effect on trade pattern and employment changes. The aim of the paper is to identify the effects of partial trade...

Branchenspezifische Besonderheiten im Innovationsverhalten des Ernährungsgewerbes: Eine empirische Analyse des Mannheimer Innovationspanels AgEcon
Kubitzki, Sabine; Anders, Sven M..
The article’s aim is to conduct a comparative cross-section analysis of the innovative behaviour of the German manufacturing industry. The peculiarities of the food industry are tested in a combined analysis based on both input and output indicators. Linear and logistic regressions are used to investigate the differences between the food industry and other branches of the manufacturing industry. In comparison to other branches, the food industry has lower research & development (R&D) expenditures whereas the import of research from more technology intensive sectors is high. Most of the released new products are improvements and imitations. Market novelties are rare. The development time for new products is relatively short compared to other...

The Situation of Hungarian Agriculture AgEcon
Burger, Anna.
Hungarian agriculture has gone thru a long and difficult development since the First World War. The semi-feudal agriculture of the Horthy era between the two World Wars was followed by a land distribution after the Second World War, which created an agricultural system dominated by smallholders. However, the small farms were soon collectivized. Despite the forced collectivization, the large farms developed well and the living standard of the peasantry grew significantly. After the collapse of socialism in Hungary in 1990, political parties decided again to restructure agriculture. A new land distribution was carried out which created an agricultural system based on smallholdings. On the mostly too small, scattered holdings, the technical and technological...

Scenarios for the Food Industry in 2010 AgEcon
Harmsen, Hanne; Jensen, Birger B.; Sonne, Anne-Mette.
While predicting the future is impossible, corporate decision-makers have to decide which competencies to develop precisely on this basis. This article presents the results of a research project on scenario analyses in the Danish food industry. The aim of the study is to look at alternative visions of the future of the food industry and to assess their implications for competence requirements. Given the uncertain nature of the environment, food companies cannot rely on today’s competencies being sufficient to fulfill the demands of tomorrow’s markets. However, predicting the determinants of success in the food industry 10 years hence is a daunting task. Scenario techniques can be very useful in this respect (VON REIBNITZ, 1988). The contribution of the...

Market Orientation, Innovativeness, and Performance of Food Companies AgEcon
Johnson, Aaron J.; Dibrell, Charles Clay; Hansen, Eric.
Food processors have seen escalating levels of competition over the past three decades. An underlying objective of this research is to gain a greater understanding of how food companies thrive in the face of this increased competition. This study incorporates market orientation theory (competitor orientation, customer orientation, and interfunctional coordination) and firm innovativeness to explain differences in firm financial performance. A national survey of food processors was conducted and structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses. The results show that the more successful firms are more internally focused (interfunctional coordination and innovativeness) than externally focused (competitor and customer orientation).

The international food standard: Bureaucratic burden or helpful management instrument in global markets? Empirical results from the German food industry AgEcon
Gawron, Jana-Christina; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
At this point in time, quality assurance schemes in the food industry and agricultural sec - tor are becoming increasingly popular. The International Food Standard is one of the most import - ant. This paper presents the results of an empirical study in the German food industry. In early 2005, 65 food manufacturers answered an extensive questionnaire and gave insights into their per - ceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of certification systems. The study focuses on the International Food Standard, which has gained much relevance in the German food industry since all major German retailers have subscribed to the system and, for the most part, no longer accept sup - pliers that do not have IFS certificates.

A KÜLFÖLDI TŐKE SZEREPE ÉS A GAZDÁLKODÁS EREDMÉNYESSÉ-GÉRE GYAKOROLT HATÁSA AZ ÉLELMISZERIPARBAN AgEcon
Hodina, Peter; Lamfalusi, Ibolya.
A kilencvenes évtized első éveiben a külföldi tőkebefektetés egyik kiemelt cél-pontja az élelmiszeripar volt. A rendkívül gyors vállalat-felvásárlás és a megva-lósított tőkeemelés hatására 1993-ban a (vizsgált) élelmiszeripar összes jegyzett tőkéjének már 43 százaléka volt külföldi tulajdonban. Ez a részesedés 2000-re meghaladta a 60 százalékot. A dinamikusan növekvő tőkebefektetési tendencia 2000 után megtört, s azóta minden évben, kisebb-nagyobb mértékben mind a jegyzett tőke, mind pedig a külföldi tőke csökken az élelmiszeriparban. A 2000. évet megelőző időszakban az élelmiszeriparban jelentkező többletki-bocsátás teljes egészében a külföldi tőkét is működtető vállalkozásokhoz kapcso-lódott. A 2000. évben, illetve utána alapvető változás következett...
