QUANTITATIVE KARYOTYPE OF DIPLODON CHILENSIS (GRAY 1828) (BIVALVIA:HYRIIDAE) Gayana

The karyotype of a freshwater population of Diplodon chilensis located in La Poza area of the Villarrica Lake (39º18'S; 72º05'W), Southern Chile, was studied. The chromosomes were obtained by squash of cleaving embryos, previously treated with colchicine and fixed in ethanol-acetic acid 3:1 at 4ºC and stained using the Feulgen reaction. Diplodon chilensis showed a diploid karyotype of 2n = 34, with metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. This work is the first approach to cytogenetic characterization of Chilean populations of this species.

A compilation of phycological literature published on Bolivian algae is presented together with an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, and needs in this field of investigation. An analysis of the nationality of authors, type, content, and geographic focus of the references shows that literature is largely produced by foreign scientist, concentrated on just a few areas of the country, or are biased toward particular algal groups, leaving ample room for more exploration. The Altiplano (high mountain plateau) and Amazon concentrate most of the publications, the phytoplankton and algae found in sediment cores, being the communities that have received more attention from scientists. Effect of temperature changes on the cercarial-shedding rate of two trematodes Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

ABSTRACT Since temperature is a key condition in the initiation of cercarial emergence, the objective of the work reported here was to evaluate the effect of that variable on the shedding of two morphologic and taxonomic types of cercariae. Bioassays were accordingly performed with snails naturally infected with either monostome or pleurolophocercous cercariae because those two cercarial types were found to be the most prevalent in the environment under study. Abundancia y distribución de las especies ícticas (Osteichthyes) del río San Francisco-Cosquín, Córdoba, Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

It was made the characterization of the San Francisco-Cosquín Mountain River fish community, Córdoba, Argentina. Samples of fish were taken from selected sites from November 1998 to November 1999. Eleven species were recorded, eight of which are first reports for this river. Relative abundance for each species, species richness, diversity and dominance were estimated. Bryconamericus iheringi (Boulenger, 1887) y Jenynsia multidentata (Jenyns, 1842) were the most abundant.

Arctic Ocean freshwater content and its decadal memory of sea-level pressure ArchiMer

Arctic freshwater content (FWC) has increased significantly over the last two decades, with potential future implications for the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation downstream. We investigate the relationship between Arctic FWC and atmospheric circulation in the control run of a coupled climate model. Multiple linear lagged regression is used to extract the response of total Arctic FWC to a hypothetical step increase in the principal components of sea‐level pressure. The results demonstrate that the FWC adjusts on a decadal timescale, consistent with the idea that wind‐driven ocean dynamics and eddies determine the response of Arctic Ocean circulation and properties to a change in surface forcing, as suggested by idealized models and theory....

Response of Arctic Freshwater to the Arctic Oscillation in Coupled Climate Models ArchiMer

The freshwater content (FWC) of the Arctic Ocean is intimately linked to the stratification—a physical characteristic of the Arctic Ocean with wide relevance for climate and biology. Here, we explore the relationship between atmospheric circulation and Arctic FWC across 12 different Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 control run simulations. The Kerguelen Islands include various species of freshwater fish such as brown trout (Salmo trutta). These trout are among the most isolated from direct anthropogenic impact worldwide. This study was designed to analyse cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) concentrations in the liver of Kerguelen brown trout, and to assess the possible impacts of these metals on hepatic histopathology and oxidative stress parameters (superoxide dismutase and catalase activity and glutathione levels). The Arctic Ocean simulated in 14 global ocean-sea ice models in the framework of the Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments, phase II (CORE-II) is analyzed in this study. The focus is on the Arctic liquid freshwater (FW) sources and freshwater content (FWC). The models agree on the interannual variability of liquid FW transport at the gateways where the ocean volume transport determines the FW transport variability. The variation of liquid FWC is induced by both the surface FW flux (associated with sea ice production) and lateral liquid FW transport, which are in phase when averaged on decadal time scales. CMIP5 Model Intercomparison of Freshwater Budget and Circulation in the North Atlantic ArchiMer

The subpolar North Atlantic is a center of variability of ocean properties, wind stress curl, and air-sea exchanges. Observations and hindcast simulations suggest that from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s the subpolar gyre became fresher while the gyre and meridional circulations intensified. This is opposite to the relationship of freshening causing a weakened circulation, most often reproduced by climate models. The Beaufort Gyre is a significant reservoir of freshwater in the Arctic. It is thought to play a key role in regulating Arctic freshwater discharge to the North Atlantic, and in recent decades its freshwater content has increased in a time of rapid Arctic change. Despite this, its exact dynamical behaviour is not fully understood. Here, we make use of an Arctic‐wide dataset of Dynamic Ocean Topography (DOT), including data under sea ice, to characterise the time‐varying extent, shape, and location of the Beaufort Gyre. Systematic sampling has proved that members of the genus Echinogammarus are known from limited areas of Morocco. In this paper, we describe a new species of Echinogammarus (Crustacea, Amphipoda): Echinogammarus oujdae n. sp. from freshwater of the northeastern region with remarks on its affinities and ecology.

Four morphologically similar specimens of an unidentified perithecial ascomycete were collected on decaying wood submerged in fresh water. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences from protein-coding and ribosomal nuclear loci supports the placement of the unidentified fungus together with Achroceratosphaeria in a strongly supported monophyletic clade. Body size and diet of organisms are fundamental attributes which determine their ecology and natural history. Iheringichthys labrosus is one of the most common fish species of the Uruguay River. However, its natural history is poorly known and there is little information about its diet and interactions with other species. This paper describes the feeding habits of this species, relating feeding patterns to the size classes and morphometry of individuals and to the temporal variations. Fishes were captured in May and November of 2006 in three zones of the lower Uruguay River. A total of 101 stomach contents was analyzed (standard length: 60-224 mm).
