CAMPOS,KELLY APARECIDA FERNANDES DE; AZEVEDO,FERNANDO ALVES DE; BASTIANEL,MARINÊS; CRISTOFANI-YALY,MARIÂNGELA.
ABSTRACT Alternaria brown spot (ABS) disease is caused by the fungus of Alternaria alternata f. sp. citri, which causes injury in leaves, branches and fruits of citrus. The action of the pathogen is directly related to the presence of toxin receptors in susceptible genotypes. The objective of this study was to characterize a population of citrus hybrids obtained from controlled crosses between Pêra de Abril sweet orange and the hybrid of Murcott tangor x Pêra sweet orange (TM x LP 163) for response to ABS through the in vitro inoculation of fungal spores in young detached leaves. The fungus was isolated from the lesions of Murcott tangor fruits that exhibited ABS symptoms. Two hundred thirty-five hybrids were evaluated, and 70 (30%) showed different...

Porto,Willyam Stern; Carvalho,Claudio Guilherme Portela de; Pinto,Ronald José Barth; Oliveira,Marcelo Fernandes de; Oliveira,Ana Cláudia Barneche de.
Despite a large availability of areas suitable for sunflower cropping in Central Brazil, few adapted cultivars are available in the market. The objective of this work was to select sunflower cultivars adapted to this important production region. Experimental data from 2000 to 2004 were obtained by the National Sunflower Trials, coordinated by Embrapa Soja. The evaluated traits were grain and oil yields. Two criteria were used for selection of cultivars: i) the general mean obtained from different environments; ii) partitioning of general mean in favorable and unfavorable environments. Partitioning of the general mean allowed to detect the specific environment indicated for each cultivar. For grain yield, the cultivar Helio 251 presented general indication,...

Methodology adjustments for organic acid tolerance studies in oat under hydroponic systems BABT
Kopp,Mauricio Marini; Luz,Viviane Kopp da; Souza,Velci Queiróz de; Coimbra,Jefferson Luis Meirelles; Sousa,Rogério Oliveira de; Carvalho,Fernando Irajá Félix de; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
The occurrence of anaerobic conditions in hydromorphic soils favors the development of anaerobic microorganisms that produce phytotoxic substances representing primarily by organic acids. The selection of promising oat (Avena sativa L.) genotypes for use in those situations requires field evaluations that can be cumbersome, making hydroponics a viable alternative. The objective of this work was to adjust a methodology to use in studies of tolerance to organic acids in oat under hydroponic systems. For such goal, the best germination system was determined in order to reduce the seedling initial establishment effects under hydroponics, the ideal concentration for screening genotypes and the best variable for stress evaluation. It was found that the most...

Path analysis under multicollinearity in soybean BABT
Bizeti,Henrique Stoco; Carvalho,Claudio Guilherme Portela de; Souza,José Roberto Pinto de; Destro,Deonisio.
This study aimed to establish the phenotypic correlations among several soybean traits with grain yield in direct and indirect effects using path analysis, and to compare alternative methods for minimizing the adverse effects of multicollinearity in estimating path coefficients. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Nine soybean genotypes belonging to three seed size categories were used. The correlation studies and the path analysis showed that the seed size was not important for increased yield. The number of nodes and plant height at maturity showed significant correlation with grain yield. Using the least square methodology, the results obtained by path analysis under multicollinearity...

Genetics of coffee quality Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Leroy,Thierry; Ribeyre,Fabienne; Bertrand,Benóit; Charmetant,Pierre; Dufour,Magali; Montagnon,Christophe; Marraccini,Pierre; Pot,David.
Coffee quality, in the present context of overproduction worldwide, has to be considered as a main selection criterion for coffee improvement. After a definition of quality, and an overview of the non genetic factors affecting its variation, this review focuses on the genetic factors involved in the control of coffee quality variation. Regarding the complexity of this trait, the different types of quality are first presented. Then, the great variation within and between coffee species is underlined, mainly for biochemical compounds related to quality (caffeine, sugars, chlorogenic acids, lipids). The ways for breeding quality traits for cultivated species, Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora are discussed, with specific challenges for each species. For C....

Production, carbon and nitrogen in stover fractions of corn ( Zea mays L.) in response to cultivar development Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Barbosa,Julierme Zimmer; Ferreira,Carla Fernanda; Santos,Nicolas Zendonadi dos; Motta,Antonio Carlos Vargas; Prior,Stephen; Gabardo,Juarez.
ABSTRACT Changes in quantity and quality of corn crop stover can have a large impact on soil conservation and soil carbon (C) sequestration over large areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in production, concentration and amount of C and nitrogen (N) in corn stover fractions due to cultivar development. Two field experiments were conducted in the city of Rolândia (Paraná State, Brazil) using ten cultivars representing five technological levels: single cross hybrids, double or triple hybrids, commercial varieties, and creole cultivars. Plant heights and stalk, leaf, cob, husk and tassel weights were determined at final harvest. Elemental C and N analyses were performed in triplicate for each stover fraction. In general, the creole cultivars...

Evaluation of maize top crosses under two nitrogen levels Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Guedes,Fernando Lisboa; Souza,João Cândido de; Costa,Emiliano Fernandes Nassau; Reis,Matheus Costa dos; Cardoso,Gustavo Andrade; Ematné,Hugo Junqueira.
Maize crops in Brazil have a wide diversity of management systems. There is a large contingent of family agriculture, which uses little or no agricultural inputs, compared to the rural enterprise which uses the most modern production systems. This difference in the management systems is particularly noticeable in relation to consumption of fertilizers, especially nitrogenous ones. Therefore it is necessary to obtain plants with efficient nitrogen (N) use that also respond to applied nitrogen. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of S0:1 progenies, in top crosses, under two nitrogen levels and select the best ones based on responsiveness and efficiency. Sixty seven S0:1 progenies from populations of single cross hybrids were crossed...
