Connecting organic to mineral: How the physiological state of an ecosystem-engineer is linked to its habitat structure ArchiMer
Curd, Amelia; Pernet, Fabrice; Corporeau, Charlotte; Delisle, Lizenn; Firth, Louise B.; Nunes, Flavia; Dubois, Stanislas.
The honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata is capable of building extensive bioconstructions, including what are currently considered Europe’s largest biogenic reefs. The size and volume of these bioconstructions, however, vary greatly, such that not all habitats engineered by S. alveolata may be easily identified as reefs. Given that European environmental legislation protects marine habitats that are classified as “reefs”, it is important to identity a clear set of definition criteria. Furthermore, quantifiable and unequivocal criteria are also needed to evaluate the ecological (health) state of these reefs, in order to best monitor and protect them. Here we propose new terminology to describe the physical appearance of these bioconstructions and attempt to...

Belin, Catherine.
The surveillance of phycotoxins in marine shellfish. The REPHY network: objectives, strategies and primary results One of the objectives of REPHY (network for phytoplankton and phycotoxin surveillance) is to monitor toxin-producing micro-algae species in the marine environment that are likely to accumulate in seafood products, and to screen for these toxins in shellfish. This surveillance is undertaken in the framework of the European regulations. Three groups of toxins are thus monitored and are associated with three genera of toxic phytoplankton: (i) Dinophysis, a producer of the okadaic acid (with diarrhoeic effects) and pectenotoxin families of toxins; in the same group of so-called “lipophilic toxins”, two other families of regulated toxins are...

Tchekemian, Anthony.
This social science study focuses on the risk from ciguatera that is affecting the Polynesians' health. Compared to the global population exposure to ciguatera health risks, the situation of French Polynesia is particularly worrisome, in view of the number of people poisoned each year. Exposure to this risk depends directly on the marine ecosystem, but also on lifestyles and individual responsibilities. This study focuses on the Tahitians' representations of the ciguatera risk, that is, their knowledge, awareness, and acceptance of the health risk resulting from the consumption of fish likely to be infected. It provides a better understanding of the cultural, social, and economic factors that explain and justify the consumption of potentially at-risk fish.

Toward reference intervals for shellfish: An illustrative case of feeding and respiratory activities in the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
François, Cyrille; Haure, Joel; Billy, Jean-christophe; Renault, Tristan.
Background The Quality Assurance and Laboratory Standards Committee of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology and the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute provide a framework for establishing reference intervals of physiological parameters in reputedly healthy individuals, humans, and terrestrial animals, respectively. This framework was applied for the first time to the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Reference intervals (RIs) would, first, be of interest for research purposes, including pathophysiology studies. RI determination is the first step before considering the use of RIs for field applications by farmers and marine shellfish health services. Objectives The purpose of this study was to propose...

Husbandry stress during early life stages affects the stress response and health status of juvenile sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Varsamos, S; Flik, G; Pepin, Jean-francois; Bonga, S; Breuil, Gilles.
In aquaculture management it is important to establish objective criteria to assess health and welfare of the fish. Here we show that European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) confronted with husbandry-associated stress (tank cleaning, i.e. scrubbing, and water temperature variation) during early life stages show poorer survival and disease resistance as juveniles. We evaluated several parameters for stress (plasma cortisol, glucose and lactate, hydromineral status), growth performance, the immune response (plasma IgM levels) and the effects of a nodavirus challenge. Principal component analysis allowed the establishment of a stress panel including plasma cortisol, osmolality, IgM levels and weight. Sea bass juveniles reared during early life in high and...

Muller-feuga, Arnaud.
Industrial potentialities related to biotechnology of microalgae are examined, highlighting a wide spectrum of applications which concern principally nutrition, health, environment and energy. The french situation of research on microalgae, especially at Ifremer, is assessed, showing that the main axis are fine chemistry, aquaculture, environment, bio-process engineering. It covers the majority of the applications, but leaves in shade certain important aspects such as human food and CO2 fixation. Concerning the general approach, some significant improvements can be expected from a more accurate control of bacteriological and genetic quality of cultures. About the industrial aspects, a national initiative seems in progress. The variety of potential...

Francois, Cyrille.
Of interest of everyone, health is not an easy concept to figure out. Although there is no universal definition of health, its various uses and meanings allow us to specify its biological, psychic and social dimensions. In animal health, the biological dimension remains the most studied, there is therefore no consensual definition of international animal health. So how to understand the health of marine shellfish? A living being can be functionally described in physiopathology by monitoring biomarkers under laboratory conditions. In men and many animals, "normal" biomarker values have been proposed; these have been determined by carrying out measurements or observations in samples of healthy populations, the rigorous selection of these populations and...

Fine-scale temporal dynamics of herpes virus and vibrios in seawater during a polymicrobial infection in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Petton, Bruno; De Lorgeril, Julien; Mitta, Guillaume; Daigle, Gaétan; Pernet, Fabrice; Alunno Bruscia, Marianne.
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is currently being impacted by a polymicrobial disease that involves early viral infection by ostreid herpesvirus-1 (OsHV-1) followed by a secondary bacterial infection leading to death. A widely used method of inducing infection consists of placing specific pathogen-free oysters (‘recipients’) in cohabitation in the laboratory with diseased oysters that were naturally infected in the field (‘donors’). With this method, we evaluated the temporal dynamics of pathogen release in seawater and the cohabitation time necessary for disease transmission and expression. We showed that OsHV-1 and Vibrio spp. in the seawater peaked concomitantly during the first 48 h and decreased thereafter. We found that 1.5 h of cohabitation...

Temperature modulate disease susceptibility of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and virulence of the Ostreid herpesvirus type 1 ArchiMer
Delisle, Lizenn; Petton, Bruno; Burguin, Jean Francois; Morga, Benjamin; Corporeau, Charlotte; Pernet, Fabrice.
Temperature triggers marine diseases by changing host susceptibility and pathogen virulence. Oyster mortalities associated with the Ostreid herpesvirus type 1 (OsHV-1) have occurred seasonally in Europe when the seawater temperature range reaches 16–24 °C. Here we assess how temperature modulates oyster susceptibility to OsHV-1 and pathogen virulence. Oysters were injected with OsHV-1 suspension incubated at 21 °C, 26 °C and 29 °C and were placed in cohabitation with healthy oysters (recipients) at these three temperatures according to a fractional factorial design. Survival was followed for 14 d and recipients were sampled for OsHV-1 DNA quantification and viral gene expression. The oysters were all subsequently placed at 21 °C to evaluate the potential...

Deciphering the effect of food availability, growth and host condition on disease susceptibility in a marine invertebrate ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Tamayo, David; Fuhrmann, Marine; Petton, Bruno.
Food provisioning influences disease risk and outcome in animal populations in two ways. On the one hand, unrestricted food supply improves the physiological condition of the host and lowers its susceptibility to infectious disease, reflecting a trade-off between immunity and other fitness-related functions. On the other hand, food scarcity limits the resources available to the pathogen and slows the growth and metabolism of the host on which the pathogen depends to proliferate. Here, we investigated how food availability, growth rate and energetic reserves drive the outcome of a viral disease affecting an ecologically relevant model host, the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. We selected fast- and slow-growing animals, and we exposed them to high and low...

Fish growth and health aspects of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) reared in standard vs. high rate algal pond recirculation systems ArchiMer
Mladineo, Ivona; Bocina, Ivana; Przybyla, Cyrille; Fievet, Julie; Blancheton, Jean-paul.
Recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) is the type of land-based aquaculture production that interferes the least with the environment, particularly due to low effluent volume and overall water requirement. Water reuse, sometimes limited by the accumulation of waste products excreted by fish, can be improved by incorporating another biotechnical component in the form of high rate algal pond (RAS+HRAP), thus adding to the economy and self sustainability of the system. Our goal was to evaluate whether rearing fish for 1 year in a RAS or RAS+HRAP led to differences in fish production and health, by assessing: (1) fish growth; (2) impact on the morphological structure of sea bass target tissues (liver, kidney, and spleen); (3) susceptibility to monogenean...
