CARDOSO, E. E.. |

This paper examines the relationship between history and science with regard to the marine environment. It argues that historians and scientists should collaborate to reconstruct past ecosystems. Such collaboration to shed some light on the reasons why the life in the oceans appears as it does today. With this objective in view, a global research program has been established. The History of marine animal populations (HMAP) addresses four basic questions. (1) How has the extent and diversity of these populations changed over the last 2000 years? (2) Which factors have influenced these change? (3) What has been the anthropogenic and biological significance of these changes? (4) What has been the interplay of changing marine ecosystems and human societies?... |

The Manual of Maritime Fishing was drafted in 1935 by the Office of Maritime Fishing. The authors attempted to explain the technical situation of that time of the industry to which their studies were dedicated. Part II of this manual deals with the various types of fishing and their tools and particularly: - Trawling - Drift net fishing (herring and mackerel) - The other kinds of sea fishing: - Sardine fishing - Tuna fishing - Crustacean fishing - Line fishing - Coast fishing - Deep-sea fishing |

The first part describes the evolution of the world sea fisheries from 1950 to 1977 and their present state : a decline of the growing rate of the catches, their biological structure and their distribution in the oceans according to the depth, the distance from the continent and the latitude. Then the biogeographical fishery complexes are defined, being characterized by assemblages of commercially valuable and actually caught species. These complexes are arranged according to the latitude with sometimes longitudinal subdivisions. At last with technical and economical criteria, such as the yield of the fisheries, the finality of the catches and the conditions of the exploitation which add themselves to the biogeographical complexes, the authors attempt to... |

The Mediterranean sea is an area which has a longlived oceanographic tradition. Since the remote antiquity, it has been the object of observations and descriptions in which maritime activities and fishing hold a paramount place, This paper presents a synthetic view on the history of the fisheries research and its evolution in the area. The very rich mediterranean fauna and the highly multispecific nature of the catches certainly favoured the fact that the first works were mainly oriented towards attempts of exhaustive descriptions of the vital cycles and biological parameters of a given species. The passage from marine biology sensu-stricto to fisheries research is relatively recent in the Mediterranean, the first attempts to apply some mathematical... |

A taxonomic revision of the African genera of Costaceae (Costus and Paracostus) is given. Within the genus Costus 24 species are recognized, 8 of which are here described as new and one is given a new name. Included are chapters on the history of the taxonomy of the family, morphology, flower biology, pollination, dispersal, distribution, ecology, phylogeny and molecular studies and conservation. The species treatments include descriptions, full synonymy, geographical and ecological notes and taxonomic notes. For all species distribution maps are provided. A complete identification list with all exsiccatae studied and an index to scientific names is included at the end. |
