An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented. |

On the base of samples of congrid eels captured in the South Western Atlantic Ocean, between 34 degree S to 40 degree S and 30m to 400m depth, from research cruises, commercial fleet (low scale and coastal fishing) and specimens preserved in ichthyological collections, four species were determined: Ariosoma opistophthalmum, Conger orbignyanus, Bassanago albescens and Bassanago nielseni. The latter is the first record in the region. Diagnosis of taxa from Family Congridae to species is given. Morphology, reproduction, feeding and distribution of the fish species found from the region are compared and discussed, as well as those from other parts of the world. On the other hand, numerous samples of ichthyoplankton were obtained from research cruises carried... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the biologic and economic effects of chemical fish silage as a unique animal protein source. Ensiled Opisthonema oglinum with three combinations of organic and inorganic acids: 3 % of formic acid; 2 % sulfuric acid 98 % and 2 % formic acid and other with 2,6 % phosphoric acid; 2,6 % of citric acid and 0,1 % of sodium benzoate. From each silage a moist diet was prepared and was compared with commercial food (20 % of fish meal) in Clarias gariepinus feeding during 60 days. There were not significant differences (p > 0,05), in growth, feed utilization and survival indicators. The economic analysis showed a fingerling production cost saves between 20 and 30 % for feeding concept. |

In order to establish the management methods in snook Centropomus undecimalis (Bloch, 1792) broodstock (initial average weight 960 g), during 18 month three phases were developed. Fishes were marked, measured, weighed and distributed in 5 m3 fiber glass tanks (stock density 1.3 kg/m3). In the first phase (3 month), different feeding schedules were applied: 1. feeding in alternate days; 2. feeding every day excluding weekends; 3. feeding twice a day. Before maturation phase and during three month, enriched semi humid food was supplied. Finally, during 12 month, artificial feed was supplied. The appetite dynamics in fishes was influenced by the feeding schedule applied. When food was offered in alternate days, higher consumption was observed. Females showed... |

The high cost of using live microalgae and the variations in nutritional value during larval culture constitute a problem for any operation relying on the massive culture of unicellular microalgae. The price of Artemia cysts in the international market and the increasing demand in Cuba, due to the development of the shrimp culture industry, has made the search of feeding alternatives that can of satisfactory diminish the live food consumption in shrimp larviculture, essential. Spirulina platensis meal (SPM), produced commercially in Cuba, has optimal nutritional characteristics to be used as a food ingredient in any aquatic animal culture. For that reason in this thesis we set out to improve the efficiency in the production of Litopenaeus schmitti shrimp... |
