Gaamour, A.; Khemiri, S.; Mili, S.; Ben Abdallah, L..
The reproduction parameters necessary for stock management and catch analysis of anchovy in the North region of Tunisia were studied. The global sex-ratio is close to 1, special caution should be taken using this parameter as it is size dependant. Mean reproduction period extends from April to October. However within this period individuals of population have different spawning and maturation. The size at first sexual maturity Lm50 is about 7.3cm. In the North region of Tunisia, the anchovy landings are lower than the exploitable biomass, therefore the anchovy is an under-exploitable species in this region

Burgos, M.A..

OceanDocs
Re, M.E..
Four species of the family Octopodidae were reported to occur along the Argentine coast Octopus tehuelchus, Eledone massyae, Enteroctopus megalocyathus and Robsonella fontaniana. The first two are distributed from Brazil to south of Rawson and San Jorge Gulf, respectively, in warm-temperate waters. E.megalocyathus and R.fontaniana are of Subantarctic origin, the first ranging from San Matias Gulf to Magellan Strait, the Beagle Channel and Malvinas Islands; R.fontaniana is distributed from San Matias Gulf southwards, with records in North Patagonian and San Jorge Gulfs, Chile and Peru. A synopsis of information about taxonomical status, patterns of geographic distribution and biological aspects of these four coastal octopodids is given.

This dissertation is focused on the study of implications of spatial patterns on survival of eggs and larvae and subsequent recruitment of the SW Atlantic anchovy, Engraulis anchoita. The study of distribution patterns is encompassed within the conceptual framework of the analysis of reproductive strategies of marine bony fish, as adaptations that enable them to cope with and actively exploit environmental variability, regulating their abundance and avoiding extinction. The SW Atlantic anchovy, is ideally suitable for studies on reproductive biology and recruitment on a comparative basis. Its spawning and nursery grounds are located in very diverse ecosystems. This variety refers to their physico-chemical properties, carrying capacity, the influence of...

Features of the reproductive biology of the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis). OceanDocs
Macchi, G.J.; Pájaro, M..
Different features of the reproductive biology of the southern blue whiting (Micromesistius australis) are analyzed. Samples were obtained from research cruises and from commercial catches carried out between March-November 1995, in waters near Malvinas Islands. Reproductive activity of M. australis was observed between the end of July and September, southwest of Malvinas Islands. Oocyte diameter distribution of gravid females and the histological observations show that this species is a batch spawner with determinate annual fecundity. Preliminary estimate of the potential annual fecundity was about 478,000 oocytes for a 51-cm mean total length. Size at first maturity for this species was about 31 cm total length.

OceanDocs
Pájaro, M..
Cannibalism is not an abnormal behaviour and it can be observed in a wide number of animals. In Pisces, cannibalism may be the result of endogenous intraspecific factors (nutritional state, size, age, state of development) or exogenous intraspecific factors (food, density, light). Nevertheless, external fertilization and the high fecundity of teleost fish tend to increase egg cannibalism, in particular among filter feeding fishes such as anchovies. In the present work, two important Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita stocks were studied. The first is to the north of 41°S, and spawns during spring on the coastal and shelf waters of Buenos Aires Province,Argentina, and Uruguay. The second one inhabits the Patagonian region, from 41°S to 47°S. It spawns...

Pérez-Jar, L.; Ramos Trujillo, L.; Racotta Dimitrov, I. S.; Guerrero, C.; Acebedo, A..
