Metodologias de procesamiento de imagenes NOAA-AVHRR y su utilizacion en aplicaciones oceanograficas y biologico-pesqueras en el Atlantico sudoccidental. OceanDocs
Bava, J..
The objective was to use the synoptic capability of NOAA-AVHRR images, and the physical variables inferred from them, in order to achieve spatial and temporal analysis that may allow correlating the satellite variables with oceanographic processes and biological or fishing data. Methodologies of image processing were developed to make possible the use of AVHRR information for the standardized and reliable generation of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) images (using bands 3 to 5 in the thermal infrared), and water reflectance images (using optic bands 1 and 2) as an index of surface turbidity in coastal zones. A methodology was also generated in order to obtain gradients images derived from SST images, which allows the identification of oceanographic fronts....

Measuring selectivity of feeding by estuarine copepods using image analysis combined with microscopic and Coulter counting OMA
Tackx, M.L.M.; Zhu, L.; De Coster, W.; Billones, R.G.; Daro, M.H..
Although estuarine zooplankters are generally believed to be detritivorous, high clearance rates by the estuarine copepods <i>Eurytemora affinis</i> and <i>Acartia tonsa</i> on natural estuarine microplankton have been reported in the literature. In order to enable detection of possible selectivity for these microplankton organisms over detritus, a method that measures clearance rates on total particulate matter is proposed. Image analysis is used to measure copepod gut contents, and combined with Coulter counter measurements of total particulate matter concentration, allows one to calculate clearance rates on the latter. The first results indicate that, in the Westerschelde estuary (SW Netherlands), both <i>E....

Identifying drought events in sugarcane using drought indices derived from Modis sensor PAB
Picoli,Michelle Cristina Araujo; Duft,Daniel Garbellini; Machado,Pedro Gerber.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of several spectral indices, used on moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (Modis) images, in identifying drought events in sugarcane. Images of Terra and Aqua satellites were used to calculate the spectral indices, using visible (red), near infrared, and shortwave infrared bands, and eight indices were selected: NDVI, EVI2, GVMI, NDI6, NDI7, NDWI, SRWI, and MSI. The indices were calculated using images between October and April of the crop years 2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10, and 2013/14. These indices were then correlated with the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI), calculated for 1, 3, and 6 months. Four of them had significant correlations with SPEI: GVMI,...

Costa,Mirian Cristina Gomes; Cunha,Isabela Maria de Lima; Jorge,Lúcio André de Castro; Araújo,Isabel Cristina da Silva.
In the search for high efficiency in root studies, computational systems have been developed to analyze digital images. ImageJ and Safira are public-domain systems that may be used for image analysis of washed roots. However, differences in root properties measured using ImageJ and Safira are supposed. This study compared values of root length and surface area obtained with public-domain systems with values obtained by a reference method. Root samples were collected in a banana plantation in an area of a shallower Typic Carbonatic Haplic Cambisol (CXk), and an area of a deeper Typic Haplic Ta Eutrophic Cambisol (CXve), at six depths in five replications. Root images were digitized and the systems ImageJ and Safira used to determine root length and surface...

Proposal of automated computational method to support Virginia tobacco classification AGRIAMBI
Tedesco,Leonel P. C.; Freitas,Adriano da C. de; Molz,Rolf F.; Schreiber,Jacques N. C..
ABSTRACT This article proposes an automatic method for classification of cured tobacco leaves. Typically this process is performed manually, allowing the occurrence of human errors. In addition, the existence of an automated comparative procedure, helping to perform the classification, can make this process faster and more transparent. In order to implement the method, non-invasive to the agricultural product, 250 samples of Virginia tobacco digital images in the RGB and HSV color models were analyzed. The validation of the method was carried out using partial least squares (PLS) and artificial neural network (ANN), presenting a qualitative and quantitative analysis of both tools. It has been verified that the PLS can be applied to this method, as it has a...

USPLeaf: Automatic leaf area determination using a computer vision system1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Meira,Luiz Antonio; Pereira,Lilian Elgalise Techio; Santos,Manoel Eduardo Rozalino; Tech,Adriano Rogério Bruno.
ABSTRACT Computer vision systems based on digital image processing have been proposed as alternative tools to traditional methods to estimate leaf area, replacing the most time-consuming steps and laboring manual measurements. However, many of the available applications are still based on manual determination of leaf dimensions or require excessive and laborious user interventions before providing results. USPLeaf was designed to process images containing single or multiple leaves, and automatically determine the leaf area without user intervention. The accuracy for leaf area measurements of the software was compared to the results obtained by the standard method, an electronic planimeter (LI-3100). The vegetal species, Mavuno grass (MAV, Urochloa hybrid)...

AN INTELLIGENT COMPUTER VISION SYSTEM FOR VEGETABLES AND FRUITS QUALITY INSPECTION USING SOFT COMPUTING TECHNIQUES CIGR Journal
G, Narendra V.
The quality of food products is very important for the human health. The large population and the increased requirements of food products makes it difficult to arrive the desired quality. The quality inspection and sorting tons of fruits and vegetables manually is a slow, costly, and an inaccurate process. In this research a vision-based quality inspection and sorting system is developed, to increase the quality of food products. The quality inspection and sorting process depends on capturing the image of the fruits/vegetables, analyzing captured image to discard defected products in order to identify the good or bad. Four different systems for different food products have been developed namely, Orange, Lemon, Sweet Lime, and Tomato. A dataset of 1200...

Development of an automatic chili drying controller based on computer vision CIGR Journal
Kanjanawanishkul, Kiattisin.
Color of dried chilies is one of the most key factors that influences consumers’ preference. It is mainly affected by the drying process. Traditionally, drying temperature is fixed during the drying process without regard to the quality of chilies being dried. Thus, the aim of this research is to develop a controller for the chili drying process that determines the drying temperature according to the change of chili color. To measure the chili color, we built a hot air tray dryer incorporated with a computer vision system which measures the chili color during drying. We converted the RGB color model to the L*a*b* color model and calculated the change of the a* component (\delta a). If \delta a within 15 minutes was less than 2, then, the drying temperature...

Mass modelling by dimension attributes for Mango (Mangifera indica cv. Zebdia) relevant to post-harvest and food plants engineering CIGR Journal
Mossad, Amr; El Helew, Waleed Kamel Mohammed; Elsheshetawy, Hemat E.; Farina, Vittorio.
Mass identification of mango fruits from their dimension attributes remains challenging.  This is because of the unregulated shapes of these fruits.  Therefore, this research aims at creating mathematical models that can demonstrate the relationship between the fruit’s mass and dimension attributes.  Hence, these models can be used in post-harvest engineering systems.  The researchers used 100 mango fruits (Mangifera indica cv. Zebdia) to determine the mathematical relationship between the fruits’ weight and dimension attributes.  The researcher measured and photographed the dimensions of these fruits and processed the image captured for each fruit using a computer program to find the fruit’s dimensions.  The results obtained led to the development of six...

Precision spray modeling using image processing and artificial neural network CIGR Journal
Azizpanah, Amir; Rajabipour, Ali; Alimardani, Reza; Kheiralipour, Kamran; Mohammadi, Vahid.
This study employed artificial neural network method for predicting the sprayer drift under different conditions using image processing technique. A wind tunnel was used for providing air flow in different velocities. Water Sensitive Paper (WSP) was used to absorb spray droplets and an automatic algorithm processed the images of WSPs for measuring droplet properties including volume median diameter (Dv0.5) and Surface Coverage Percent (SCP). Four Levenberg-Marqurdt models were developed to correlate the sprayer drift (output parameter) to the input parameters (height, pressure, wind velocity and Dv0.5). The ANN models were capable of predicting the output variables in different conditions of spraying with a high performance. Both models predicted the...

Development of an imaging system for spatially real-time measurement of drying parameters in industrial drying units CIGR Journal
amjad, waseem; Munir, Anjum; Sturm, Barbara.
Lack of accurate information for the drying kinetics is the main barrier to optimize drying processes effectively. Online monitoring of drying data is not common due to practical issues involved in set-up application. In this study an imaging system was developed for large drying units to investigate the quality changes (color kinetics and shrinkage) combine with weight loss of food product spatially and non-destructively during convective drying. The imaging setup was used in a diagonal-airflow batch dryer and shifted along the dryer length to take data (food images and weight loss) at different positions using potato slices (5mm thick, 60°C) as drying material. First order model fitted well to value of ∆L* and ∆b* while ∆a* and ∆E fitted in zero order...

Effects of some air-jet impingement parameters on the removal of sunflower seeds from the heads in linear movement CIGR Journal
Mirzabe, Amir Hossein; Chegini, Golam Reza; Massah, Jafar; Khazaei, Javad.
Due to success of air-jet application in food and agricultural sciences, a new method was invented based on the impingement jets in order to eliminate a number of problems present in mechanical methods of removing sunflower seeds from the head. When the sunflower head had linear velocity and the nozzle was fixed, the effects of the seeds’ location on the sunflower head, reservoir pressure, nozzle diameter, linear velocity of the sunflower head, and the distance between the nozzle outlet and the surface of the sunflower head on its removed area were examined. The regions removed by the impingement of the air-jet were photographed and the area of the removed regions was calculated based on the image processing technique. The results showed that the area of...
