Within the European water framework directive (WFD), the status assessment of littoral waters is based both on the chemical quality and on the ecological quality of each water body. Quality elements enabling to assess the ecological status of a water body are, among other things, biological quality elements (phytoplankton, macroalgae, angiosperms, benthic invertebrates, fish), for each of which the member states have developed quantitative indicators. This document is one of the deliverables of a multi-annual study intended to characterize the sensitivity of these biological indicators towards the various anthropogenic pressures exerted on the French Atlantic and Channel coast: ultimately, the goal is to establish a quantitative and predictive... |

Port activities require continuous or occasional dredging of considerable quantities of sediments : approximately 50 million m3 along the French coastline. A large proportion of the dredgings is authorized for dumping at sea in geographically delimited areas and following an impact evaluation of their potential harmfulness to the marine environment. The environmental risks assessment linked to dredging operations relies on knowledge related to several scientific disciplines contributing to changes in the regulations. This work, intended both for managers and for environmental scientists and engineers, is designed to take stock of the current state-of-the-art in the field of sediment contamination and related ecotoxicological hazards, along with a review of... |

Marine fish farming is fairly recent in France and it is still in the process of being developed. On the Atlantic and Channel coasts, it deals mainly with Atlantic salmon (Salma salar), fario trout (Salmonella faria) with l,400 t in 1991, and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) with 600 t. In Gravelmes a bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and bream (Sparus auratus) farm (1,000 t) uses water which is heated (Mediterranean production for these two species is around 2,000 t). Although these figures are low compared to French shellfish farming (200,000 t) and foreign fish farms (150,000 t in Norway, for example), they are growing. |

The role of freshwater is more difficult to comprehend. It might act as a detrital organic matter "vector" (during floods) or an anthropic waste "vector" (toxic molecules from agriculture or other industries; nutritive salts from leaching...). Its effect has been demonstrated in the Bay of Veys (Ropert and Kopp, 2000; Misko, 2003), and especially its intense but transient action, presenting high freshenings, as recorded by high-frequency multiparameter probes since 1996 [15]. On this oyster culture site, mortality could then result from osmotic shocks. The "mortality-flow" relationship, demonstrated in 2003 in the Bay of Veys (Misko 2003), has to be specified. It is found in a more sustained way in the Marennes Oléron Bay (R2 = 0.40). This result also... |

The evaluation of the ecological and economical consequences of the hydrocarbon pollution of the Erika implies the setting up of monitorings, analysis and experiments in the short, medium and long term. Among the consequences to be evaluated, a great deal of attention has to be paid to the direct impact on the biology and production performances of the main shellfish species as about 30% of the national production (around 130,000 tons of oysters and 60,000 tons of mussels per year) is cultivated in the impacted area. The main difficulty in evaluating the effects of the contaminants on a distinct part of the ecosystem which is mostly dominated by a cultured population dwells in the different approaches to set up as well as the variability of the answers... |

On 17 January 1982, the Minister of the Environment issued a decree limiting the use of anti-fouling paints that have organostannic derivatives for boats of less than 25 metres in length. This decision, taken after advice from the Commission for Assessing the Ecotoxicity of Chemical Substances, was meant to protect oyster-farming against the serious pollution linked to the growing use of this type of paint. These provisions, adopted only a few months after the harmful effects of organo-tins were brought to light, made it possible to protect oyster farming in some endangered areas. Moreover, they brought on an international awareness of the ecological risks linked to the struggle against marine biological fouling. |

The Thau lagoon (France) is an important site for the cultivation of Crassastrea gigas. The relationship belween the oyster population and the environment was assessed through a model of trophic relationships. The results represent the initial step lowards a more precise assessment of the biological fluxes in the lagoon. This preliminary model was based on the nitrogen dynamics among the following compartments: phytoplankton, zooplankton. oysters. detritus and dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the water column. Two other compartments were also considered in the sediment: detritus and dissolved nitrogen. The model considered the watershed input and seawater exchange belween the lagoon and the open sea . The parameters were estimated from experiments on oyster... |

At the present time, it has been determined that the average fish consumption per inhabitant should double by the year 2030, as it did between 1973 and 2003. Hence, what should we do to better preserve (if not increase) fish stocks that are constantly decreasing? How should aquaculture be considered? Can it meet this growing demand, and if so, what will be its environmental impact? How could developing countries ask aquaculture companies to take care of the extra costs linked to a sustainable aquaculture production? |

Forest fire is an important issue in New Caledonia. During the dry season, forest fire can remove vegetation from large areas (from 10 000 to 30 000 ha per year on average), leaving metal-rich soils uncover and more exposed to runoff. The impact of forest fires on the chemical and microbiological quality of water has been poorly studied in New Caledonia, either for river water bodies or coastal lagoon water bodies. The purpose of this document is to review the current knowledge on forest fires impacts on water quality that has been documented in the worldwide literature, a topic of increasing importance in the context of global warming. |

Annually exploited communities from the Nile delta and two nearby lagoons (Manzalah and Edkou) were monitored from 1962 to 1989. The changes in community structure were analysed as a function of two events: fishing pressure growth (motorized fishing vessels) which increased by a factor of 19 between 1952 and 1962; and the construction of the Aswan Dam, which was built between 1965 and 1969, reducing the flow of the Nile by 90 %. Before the construction of the dam, increased sea fishing pressure led to a decline in landings from 33,832 tons in 1962 to 8,522 tons in 1969, but with no structural change in the exploited community. However, following completion of the dam in 1969, the community structure changed and a significant correlation was detected... |

This document is a result of an environmental impact study carried out between 1993 and 1995 on the site of a marine trout culture located in the Harbour of Cherbourg, France. It deals with the solid waste of the farm and concems deposition rate, sediment analysis and chemistry (fine fraction < 63 ~m, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, copper and zinc), bottom living organisms and underwater video monitoring. The impact observed is very moderate and localised. This is mainly due to the strong d)'TIamics and flushing rate of the site. A seperate volume of the same study deals with dissolved waste and concems the water mass (volume 1 : water and pelagos). (Not controlled OCR) |

Oyster farm structures represent artificial obstacles which can disturb tidal currents and wave propagation, and thus modify sediment transport patterns. Local deposition may result from these modifications, in proportions that may threaten the oyster farming. The impact of structures on hydrodynamics, waves and currents, is investigated at different spatial scales by means of in-situ measurements, experimental tests and numerical modeling. These different approaches show that in the near-field, tidal currents are modified in terms of intensity and direction but there is no significant impact on the waves. On the other hand, at the scale of the oyster farm, a significant reduction of the current velocities and a large wave height attenuation are recorded.... |

Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. After its first description in June 1979ı in Brittany, the parasite rapidly spread to all French oyster farming areas and in other European countries through transfers of live molluscs. The parasite has been described in different ecosystems from estuaries to open sea and no clear correlations could he demonstrated between the disease development and environmental parameters like temperature or salinity. The infection can he directly transmitted by cohabitation between infected and non infected oysters. Nevertheless, the parasite life cycle, including its survival outside the host, is not completely... |
