O PROCESSO DE TOMADA DE DECISÃO SOB O VIÉS DA ECOSSOCIOECONOMIA DAS ORGANIZAÇÕES: O CASO DE UMA COOPERATIVA CATARINENSE DE ARTESÃOS AgEcon
Felski, Henrique; Sampaio, Carlos Alberto Cioce; Dallabrida, Ivan Sidney.
The objective of this work is to analyze the Arte Rio Cooperative’s decision making process to assess how far it comprehends its members’ cooperative production system, i.e. if there is a logic governing the process that is different from utilitarian economics. It was inferred that the logic involved in the decision making process is contrary to market economy rationality. The cooperative’s decision making process has found mechanisms to adapt to the dictates of the market economy, mechanisms which modify popular culture and knowledge and the cooperative lifestyle of its members. This is a qualitative study supported by bibliographic and document analysis, descriptive exploratory research, participative observation and structured script interviews. In the...

TECHNOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE IN MEAT PROCESSING AND IMPLICATIONS FOR POLICY AgEcon
Xia, Yin; Buccola, Steven T..
We develop a general model of processing cost, output demand, and factor demand in the U.S. meat processing industries, allowing for capital quasi-fixity and imperfectly competitive pricing. The model is used to analyze the sources and nature of size economies and technical change in the meat sector.

A CROSS-COUNTRY COMPARISON OF EFFICIENCY OF FIRMS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY AgEcon
Acheampong, Yvonne J.; Wetzstein, Michael E..
Stochastic frontier analysis is used to determine the relative efficiency of firms in the food industry in industrialized countries. Using panel data analysis, the firm-specific factors, firm-size, the corporate tax rate and number of years of operation and country-specific effects as potential sources of efficiency are investigated. Relevant implications are discussed.

Euro-Mediterranean Supply Chain Developments and Trends in Trade Structures, in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Sector AgEcon
Kalaitzis, Prodromos; van Dijk, Gert; Baourakis, George.
Supply chains for fresh fruit and vegetables, are going through considerable re-shaping phase worldwide. This study analyses the trends which impose those changes and focuses mainly at the wholesale and export trading of the Euro-Mediterranean supply chain (namely, on how fruit and vegetable producer, wholesale and export firms react to the market forces that direct them). Producer organizations and wholesale firms one the one hand of The Netherlands, Germany and other EU member countries, and of Non- EU Member Mediterranean countries, on the other hand, are the subject of this study. Two graphical representation of the Dutch and the German supply chains respectively are presented here as the main instrument to demonstrate the dynamics of the sectors...

Food Security, Food Chains and Bioenergy Challenges for a Sustainable Development Environment AgEcon
Carvalho, Pacheco de; Bernardo, M.T..
Food system dynamics worldwide are under a new paradigm. Energy supply based on renewable natural resources is now a necessary solution, where agri-business can play an important role, and food systems will have to interact worldwide with new competitors for land and agriculture activity. The argument in this paper is based on the evidence that innovation and technology changes in food production (agricultural production) can offer a sustainable supply of grain and biomass, when demand behaviour is consistent and very flexible (demand elasticity above 1). The main argument is based on the hypothesis that demand behaviour is the main driver in food systems, which can be observed looking at technical and technological changes in production systems in Europe...

China Pear Value Chain: Implication for Smallholders AgEcon
Huang, Zuhui; Zhang, Jing; Chen, Kevin Z..
The objective of this paper is to describe different types of value chain, to capture value added activities of each chain, to discuss the organizational and institutional link in each value chain and its implications for the role of small farmers. We focus on two counties in Hebei and Zhejiang of China. Taking pear for example, analysis of value chain is conducted using data of representative samples of pear value chain. For each chain, value added activities, cost composition, profit distribution, organizational and institutional linkages are illustrated, and corresponding conclusions are indicated. After a systematic analysis of organizational and institutional linkage and value adding activities of every chain as well as cost-benefit analysis of...

Networks in Rural Economy: Valorising Endogenous and Exogenous Drivers of Innovation AgEcon
Vermeire, Bert; Gellynck, Xavier; De Steur, Hans; Viaene, Jacques.
Historically, perspectives on the economic development of rural regions have been dominated by the modernization model of agriculture (van der Ploeg and Van Dijk, 1995). During the last decades this model has increasingly been abandoned in an effort to reduce the negative outcomes associated with that model, driven by the changing concerns of consumers and society in response to these outcomes (van der Ploeg, 1999, Weatherell et al., 2003). Parallel to this socioeconomic evolution the theoretical perspectives on rural development altered. Discourses about the evolution of rural development describe the succession of an exogenous, modernist model of rural development by an endogenous model and in the end leading to an integrated model of rural development,...

A TERMÉKFELDOLGOZOTTSÁG LOGISZTIKAI KÖLTSÉGEKRE GYAKOROLT HATÁSÁNAK BIZONYÍTÁSA AgEcon
Duleba, Szabolcs.

Would Functional Agricultural Foods Improve Human Health? AgEcon
Traill, W. Bruce; Arnoult, Matthieu H.; Chambers, Stephanie A.; Deaville, E.R.; Gordon, Michael H.; John, P.; Jones, Philip J.; Kliem, K.E.; Mortimer, S.R.; Tiffin, J. Richard.
Concern over diet-health relationships has moved to the forefront of public health concerns in the UK and much of the developed world. It has been estimated, for example, that obesity costs the UK National Health Service up to £6b per year (Rayner and Scarborough, 2005), but if all consumers were to follow recommended healthy eating guidelines there would be major implications for food consumption, land use and international trade (Srinivasan et al, 2006). This is unlikely to happen, at least in the short term, but it is realistic to anticipate some dietary adjustment toward the recommendations, resulting in an improvement in diet quality (Mazzocchi et al, 2007). Although consumers are reluctant to make major changes to their diets, they may be prepared to...

Strukturwandel durch Fusionen im Ernährungssektor: Ein anhaltender Konzentrationsprozess? AgEcon
Neumann, Gyde; Weiss, Christoph R..
Mergers and acquisitions substantially affect the structure of the German food industry. This study analyses changes in the number of mergers and acquisitions for 21 German industries between 1976 and 1994. The results of an econometric panel data analysis show (a) a high degree of persistence, (b) distinct anti-cyclical fluctuations and a positive trend of merger activities as well as (c) significant effects of industry specific characteristics. Contrary to the available empirical literature the econometric model differentiates between industry characteristics of “acquiring” and “acquired” firms.

Governance in the East Indian Company AgEcon
Hofstede, Gert Jan; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
(Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the Dutch East India Company), one of the world’s major players in the international food market of the 17th and 18th centuries. Can the experiences of the VOC teach lessons that today’s food production networks may take to heart? There are three domains in which changes might have occurred since the times of the VOC that could be relevant to this question. These are the people themselves, the rules of the game that can be captured by the term governance, and context factors. The article will investigate all three. As far as the people are concerned it will look at factors such as worker conditions, attitudes, and culture in general. In the area of governance the paper will consider contract enforcement and coercion...

AN ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY IN AGRICULTURE: A NONPARAMETRIC APPROACH AgEcon
Chavas, Jean-Paul; Aliber, Michael.
A nonparametric analysis of technical, allocative, scale, and scope efficiency of agricultural production is presented based on a sample of Wisconsin farmers. The results indicate the existence of important economies of scale on very small farms, and of some diseconomies of scale for the larger farms. Also, it is found that most farms exhibit substantial economies of scope, but that such economies tend to decline sharply with the size of the enterprises. Finally, the empirical evidence suggests significant linkages between the financial structure of the farms and their economic efficiency.

The Portuguese Tomato Processing Sector: Market Structure, Concentration and Firm Behaviour AgEcon
Martins, Maria De Fatima; De Oliveira, Lorena.
The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution and the structure of the Portuguese processing tomato industry. We intend to pick up the dynamics, the strategic behaviour and structural the changes in the tomato industry in Portugal during the period of 1990-2005. An overview of world and domestic production and trade in the last two decades is followed by the descriptive analysis and by the development of the market structure. The market structure analysis was carried out during 1990 - 2002, under the Structure-Conduct-Performance framework. This paper examines the concentration effect on the performance and firm's strategy. The result indicates that, market concentration in tomato processing industry in quantity is a moderate concentrate market but...

Investment in Cellulosic Biofuel Refineries: Does the Waivable Mandate Matter? AgEcon
Miao, Ruiqing; Babcock, Bruce A.; Hennessy, David A..
Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) aims to support investment in cellulosic biofuel refineries by mandating a floor on the amount of biofuels being consumed in every calendar year. Tradable Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) is the market mechanism by which the mandates are to be met. But the RFS allows for a waiver of the mandates. In this paper we construct a conceptual model to study the impact of RINs on stimulating investment in cellulosic biofuel refineries under a waivable mandate. In a two-period framework, we compare the first-period investment level in three scenarios: (1) laissez-faire, (2) non-waivable mandate implemented through RINs, and (3) waivable mandate implemented through RINs. We find that RINs associated with a waivable mandate may or...
