To make a meadow it takes a clover and a bee: the entomophilous flora of N.W. Europe and its insects Naturalis
Ellis, Willem N.; Ellis-Adam, Albertine C..
An analysis of the anthophilous fauna of N.W. Europe is presented, stressing the role plants play for insects. The study is based on some 29,000 relations between about 2,600 insect species and 1,300 plant species (569 genera). The data are derived from our database (“CrypTra”) of biotic relations between Cryptobiota and Tracheophyta, that is based on published sources. It is suggested that a ratio of 2 to 5 anthophilous insect species per entomophilous plant species is the rule in N.W. Europe, where other types of zoophily are virtually absent. A small minority of the plant species/genera play a disproportionally important role as hosts to flower visitors; many of these so-called cornucopian taxa belong to the commonest entomophilous plants in the region,...

Silicon influence on resistance induction against Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Genn.) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and on vegetative development in two soybean cultivars Neotropical Entomology
Ferreira,RS; Moraes,JC; antunes,CS.
The potential of populations of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) to become resistant to insecticides has stimulated research into alternative tactics of integrated pest management such as the induction of host-plant resistance. Recent data have shown that silicon can increase the degree of resistance of host plants to insect pests. Therefore the aim of our work was to study the effects of silicon application on the vegetative development of soybean plants and on the induction of resistance to the silverleaf whitefly, B. tabaci biotype B. We performed choice and no-choice tests of oviposition preference on two soybean cultivars, IAC-19 (moderately resistant to B. tabaci biotype B) and MONSOY-8001 (susceptible), with and without application of silicon. Silicon did not...

Ecological modeling and pest population management: a possible and necessary connection in a changing world Neotropical Entomology
Lima,Ernesto A B F; Ferreira,Claudia P; Godoy,Wesley A C.
Ecological modeling is an important tool for investigating dynamic behavior patterns in populations, trophic interactions, and behavioral ecology. However, the ecological patterns that reflect population oscillation trends are often not clearly visible without analytical instruments such as ecological models. Thus, ecological modeling plays a fundamental role in describing demographic processes that are important for population dynamics. Ecological models, besides making possible the visualization of ecological patterns, may also reveal patterns of population persistence in many trophic systems, including prey-predator or host-parasitoid relationships, interactions that are commonly present in integrated pest management programs. In this forum, we present...

Influence of parasitism by Chelonus insularis Cresson (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on the susceptibility of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to insecticides Neotropical Entomology
Zenner,Ingeborg; Álvarez,Alonso; Barreto,Sandra.
The egg-larval parasitoid Chelonus insularis Cresson is a key parasitoid of the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) during the second field generation in the upper Magdalena River Basin, Colombia. In spite of selection pressure, the higher susceptibility of the second generation fall armyworm larvae to insecticides, compared with that of the first generation, suggests that the parasitism may be responsible for the apparent difference in susceptibility. Parasitized and non-parasitized 2nd-instar larvae of the fall armyworm were tested for susceptibility to chlorpyriphos, methomyl, cypermethrin, and Bacillus thuringiensis in the laboratory, using the leaf dip test. Parasitized larvae were up to 3.93 times more susceptible to chlorpyriphos, 3.71...

Screening of entomopathogenic nematodes (Nemata: Rhabditida) and the efficiency of Heterorhabditis sp. against the sugarcane root spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Fabr.) (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) Neotropical Entomology
Leite,Luís G.; Machado,Laerte A.; Goulart,Roberto M.; Tavares,Fernando M.; Batista Filho,Antonio.
The pathogenicity of six entomopathogenic nematodes was assessed against nymphs of the sugarcane root spittlebug Mahanarva fimbriolata (Fabr.), in the laboratory. The efficiency of the most virulent agent was tested in the field. Seven laboratory treatments were designed with two specimens of the genus Heterorhabditis, three of Steinernema, one specimen of Steinernema glaseri (Steiner), and a control group. In the field, two experiments were conducted. The first experiment involved nine treatments: the control, four treatments with Heterorhabditis sp. (CB-n5) applied to the straw mulch at doses 6.6 x 10(7), 3.3 x 10(8), 6.6 x 10(8) and 3.3 x 10(9) IJs/ha, and four treatments with the nematodes applied to the soil and beneath the straw mulch layer, at the...

Sarsina violascens spatial and temporal distributions affected by native vegetation strips in eucalyptus plantations PAB
Zanuncio,José Cola; Tavares,Wagner de Souza; Ramalho,Francisco de Sousa; Leite,Germano Leão Demolin; Serrão,José Eduardo.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate spatial and temporal distributions of Sarsina violascens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae: Lymantriinae) in two Eucalyptus cloeziana plantations, one with native vegetation strips (WNVS) and another without them (ONVS). Adults were collected with light traps, which were installed: inside an area of native vegetation (Cerrado), 100 m from the edge; at the contact zone between the native vegetation area and the E. cloeziana plantation; inside the E. cloeziana plantation, 250 m from the edge; at the central part of the native vegetation strip, around 500 m from the edge (WNVS) or in the contact zone between two E. cloeziana compartments (ONVS); and inside the E. cloeziana plantation, 500 m from the edge. The number...

Semivariogram models for estimating fig fly population density throughout the year PAB
Batistella Pasini,Mauricio Paulo; Dal'Col Lúcio,Alessandro; Cargnelutti,Alberto Filho.
The objective of this work was to select semivariogram models to estimate the population density of fig fly (Zaprionus indianus; Diptera: Drosophilidae) throughout the year, using ordinary kriging. Nineteen monitoring sites were demarcated in an area of 8,200 m2, cropped with six fruit tree species: persimmon, citrus, fig, guava, apple, and peach. During a 24 month period, 106 weekly evaluations were done in these sites. The average number of adult fig flies captured weekly per trap, during each month, was subjected to the circular, spherical, pentaspherical, exponential, Gaussian, rational quadratic, hole effect, K-Bessel, J-Bessel, and stable semivariogram models, using ordinary kriging interpolation. The models with the best fit were selected by...

Natural resistance of soybean cultivars to the soybean looper larva Chrysodeixis includens (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) PAB
Wille,Paulo Eduardo; Pereira,Bruna Angelina; Wille,Cleiton Luiz; Restelatto,Samanta Souza; Boff,Mari Inês Carissimi; Franco,Cláudio Roberto.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the natural resistance of soybean cultivars to Chrysodeixis includens. For this, four commercial soybean cultivars recommended for the Southern region of Brazil were used: BR 36, NA 5909 RG, BMX Turbo RR, and Benso 1RR. In the laboratory, larvae were subjected to the antixenosis feeding assay, in which they were free or not to choose among old leaves, new leaves, and pods. Neonate larvae were subjected to two antibiosis tests: in the first one, they were fed with leaves from the middle third of the plants of the four cultivars; and, in the second one, with leaves or pods of the NA 5909 RG cultivar. Chrysodeixis includens larvae prefer leaves over pods and old leaves over new ones. The Benso 1RR cultivar...
