Ten Years After - Welfare Effects of the Application of the CAP in Austria, Finland and Sweden AgEcon
Niemi, Jyrki S.; Fahlbeck, Erik; Hofreither, Markus F..
Ten years ago, Austria, Finland, and Sweden joined the EU. The application of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) caused major repercussions on the agricultural sectors of the entering countries. This article analyses the welfare effects of accession to the EU on the agricultural markets in Austria, Finland and Sweden in a simple supply and demand framework, which is kept strictly identical across all three countries. The quantitative results of the study are derived by using standard partial equilibrium comparative static analysis in the Marshallian economic surplus framework. Using this method, the welfare effects are calculated for eight major cereal and livestock commodities produced in Austria, Finland, and Sweden by comparing the evolution of the...

AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD TRADE IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE: THE CASE OF SLOVENIAN INTRA-INDUSTRY TRADE AgEcon
Bojnec, Stefan; Hartmann, Monika.
One of the striking features in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries is the deterioration of their agricultural and food trade balance during transition to a market economy as imports increased faster than exports or exports even declined. This paper investigates the Slovenian agricultural and food trade in more detail focusing on changes in the geographical distribution of trade and the nature of trade specialization on the basis of the Grubel-Lloyd Intra-Industry Trade index and Marginal Intra-Industry Trade Indices. The results indicate that Slovenian agricultural and food trade largely remains of the inter-industry type with specialisation of exports towards the former Yugoslav markets and imports from the European Union. The proportion of...

National Policies and the Limits of International Integration AgEcon
Gerber, James.
In spite of the rapid growth of merchandise trade since the end of World War II, the world economy is far from integrated. Services trade, capital flows, population migration, and price differences demonstrate far more scope for international economic integration. Even among nations with preferential trade agreements, networks of merchandise trade relations are far denser intra-nationally than internationally. The absence of goods trade predicted by trade models when nations have few policy barriers implies that crossing national boundaries is a significant indicator of increased transaction costs. These patterns have caused the world trade agenda to examine some unintended trade restrictions which make up a part of national domestic policies. This focus...

Augmented Gravity Model: An Empirical Application to Mercosur-European Union Trade Flows AgEcon
Martinez-Zarzoso, Inmaculada; Nowak-Lehmann, Felicitas.
This paper applies the gravity trade model to assess Mercosur-European Union trade, and trade potential following the agreements reached recently between both trade blocs. The model is tested for a sample of 20 countries, the four formal members of Mercosur plus Chile and the fifteen members of the European Union. A panel data analysis is used to disentangle the time invariant country-specific effects and to capture the relationships between the relevant variables over time. We find that the fixed effect model is to be preferred to the random effects gravity model. Furthermore, a number of variables, namely, infrastructure, income differences and exchange rates added to the standard gravity equation, are found to be important determinants of bilateral...

Structure, Coûts Des Transactions Et Integration Spatiale Des Marches Des Produits Alimentaires Au Togo AgEcon
Koffi-Tessio, Egnonto M.; Sedzro, Kossi; Tossou, Kokou A.; Yovo, Koffi.

The Impact of EU Enlargement on European Border Regions AgEcon
Niebuhr, Annekatrin.
EU enlargement is supposed to entail profound impact on the location of economic activities in Europe. Although there is concern about the implications of enlargement for regional disparities in the EU, corresponding empirical results are still rare. The objective of this analysis is to provide empirical evidence on enlargement effects with a special focus on border regions in the EU27 since they are likely to play a critical role within the spatial dynamics initiated by integration. Departing from a three-region economic geography model we investigate whether changes in market access released by integration result in above-average integration benefits in border regions.

Assessing the Effects of NAFTA ON Canada/US Agricultural Trade AgEcon
Deng, Hugh; Nzuma, Jonathan M..
While there seems to be an agreement that Canada-US Free Trade Agreement (CUSTA)/North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have benefited member countries, some analysts have argued that the agreements had little effect on the bilateral Canada/US agricultural trade as many other factors have contributed to the increased trade flows. Results from this study reveal that the aggregate bilateral agricultural trade flows have generally experienced a steady growth since the implementation of NAFTA with trade flows seemingly favoring Canada more than the US since 1992. At the industry level, the impacts of NAFTA on Canada/US agricultural trade were varied with the sub-sectors analyzed responding differently to the bilateral trade liberalization.

Renewable energy integration into the Australian National Electricity Market: Characterising the energy value of wind and solar generation AgEcon
Boerema, Nicholas; Kay, Merlinde; MacGill, Iain.
This paper examines how key characteristics of the underlying wind and solar resources may impact on their energy value within the Australian National Electricity Market(NEM). Analysis has been performed for wind generation using half hour NEM data for South Australia over the 2008-9 financial year. The potential integration of large scale solar generation has been modelled using direct normal solar radiant energy measurements from the Bureau of Meteorology for six sites across the NEM. For wind energy, the level and variability of actual wind farm outputs in South Australia is analysed. High levels of wind generation in that State have been found to have a strong secondary effect on spot prices. Wind generation's low operating costs will see it displacing...

Accession to the World Trade Organisation: Challenges and Prospects for the Least-developed Countries (LDCs) AgEcon
Delelegn, Mussie.
A significant number of countries - many of which are least-developed countries (LDCs) - are not members of the multilateral trading system (MTS) as yet, and for many the accession process has taken an undesirably long period of time to complete. This lack of participation has important implications for national and global policy making in the field of international trade. However, there is a growing tendency to disregard accession challenges and difficulties facing the weakest members of the international community - the LDCs. The main purposes of this article are to a) discuss the substantive, normative and institutional complexities and requirements surrounding the WTO accession process from the perspective of LDCs, b) assess the possible costs and...

DESARROLLANDO ESQUEMAS DE FINANCIAMIENTO PARA EL SECTOR AGRÍCOLA TECNIFICADO Y DE ALTO VALOR AGREGADO AgEcon
Villarreal Gonzalez, Amado; Celaya Figueroa, Roberto.
The importance of the horticultural sector in generating employment, the spread of economic and financial resources in the use of supplies and generating foreign income, are undeniable aspects of the kindnesses that has brought the development of this sector. Nevertheless, the feel of the producers, especially the small and medium, is that the access to financing is very limited. Carrying out a work of investigation between the actors of the supply and demand of credit, and analyzing the plans of successful financing in other sectors, the present work designs a more favorable plan of financing where the Horticulture can have access to opportune and sufficient financing through the organization of producers, the constitution of sufficient guarantees and the...

Integration of Agricultural Information Resources in Western China AgEcon
Zhou, Lei; Wen, Shuping.
The essence and significance of integrating agricultural information resources in western China were summarized. The integration methods were introduced from the following four aspects: agricultural information infrastructure, database, collaborative management and service application. The integration technologies were discussed, the core of which lies in integrating distributed application via software and realizing the trans-departmental and trans-system exchange and share of information through controlling information. Based on the introduction of several frequently-used intelligence terminals, the approaches of realizing the transmission of agricultural information resources in western China were analyzed. And the integration measures were put forward...

Cleaning Up the Nuclear Weapons Complex: Exploring New Approaches AgEcon
Probst, Katherine N.; Pilling, Carolyn A.; Dunn, Karen T..
In recent years, policy experts have increasingly decried the "piecemeal" approach to environmental protection embodied in existing laws and regulations. This paper analyzes one aspect of the call for more integration: the feasibility and advisability of developing an integrated approach to regulating the cleanup of the nation's nuclear weapons complex. The Cold War has left an unprecedented set of difficulties at sites across the country where vast quantities of hazardous and radioactive materials must be properly managed. Regulatory fragmentation--particularly the phenomenon of multiple regulators and regulations driving the allocation of resources in an uncoordinated fashion--is nowhere more evident than in the current statutory and regulatory framework...

CONTRIBUIÇÃO DA CERTIFICAÇÃO ORGÂNICA PARA UM NOVO MODELO DE GOVERNANÇA NO COMPLEXO AGROINDUSTRIAL CITRÍCOLA BRASILEIRO AgEcon
Carvalho, Murilo Sicchieri de; Paulillo, Luiz Fernando.
This paper compares governance structures in the Brazilian citrus production that appeared with the process of international certification of organic products. Both governance structures, between organic orange production and the processing plant, are analyzed through a study case methodology. These two governance structures are different from the traditional dominant structures that were consolidated with the industrial oligopoly of frozen and concentrated orange juice production along the last thirty years in Brazil. The analyzed cases (onward integration and onward partial-integration) can be used as a reference for possible penetrations of alternative organizational forms in citrus production in an agro-industrial complex predominantly directed at...

Integration of small and medium size farmers by co-operatives in the Hungarian fruit and vegetable sector - a case study AgEcon
Szabo, Gabor G..
The main co-ordinators/channels used in Hungarian fruit and vegetable supply chain are the following: local market, wholesale markets, production co-operatives, marketing cooperatives, producers’ organisation, processing industry, wholesalers and retailers. Different retail chains gain a progressively larger share of the fresh fruit and vegetable market. It is very important, therefore, that the farmers have to use marketing channels which could give them the strengths (countervailing power) of more concentrated organisations. In this case study, we examine the integration role of Mórakert Purchasing and Service Co-operative, in Mórahalom in county Csongrád which can be found in the southern east part of Hungary. The Morakert co-operative active in the...

Regional Integration and International Trade in the Context of EU Eastward Enlargement AgEcon
Paas, Tiiu.
The paper aims to explore international trade flows of the countries involved in the EU eastward enlargement processes - the current EU members (EU15) and the candidate countries (CC12). The empirical results of the study allow us to conclude that the behaviour of bilateral trade flows within the countries involved in EU eastward enlargement accords to the normal rules of gravitation, having statistically significant spatial biases caused by the trade relations, between the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) countries (the BSR bias), the border countries (the border bias) and the EU member and candidate countries (the East-West bias). The East-West trade relations are still rather weakly developed and there is a statistically significant difference in international...

Vegetable forcing program in Hungary, and its employment aspects AgEcon
Gergely, Sandor.
Hungary is one of the countries best suited for agriculture in Europe and throughout the world. Over the last decades, however, the emphasis on putting such natural endowments to the benefit of the nation and of rural communities has dwindled. Most of the opportunities lost concern vegetable and fruit growing, as well as animal husbandry. This also means that these are the fields where we have the greatest reserves. No country may reach the level of prosperity to which it destined without using its natural and human resources in a sustainable manner. Our paper presents the main trends in vegetable growing in the world, the Community and in Hungary, as well as characteristics of the export and import of vegetables in the country. We present development...
