While Tanzania’s system of designating terrestrial parks and protected areas has been historically exclusionary, recent conservation initiatives are acknowledging the need to involve local people in these programs and to provide benefits to resource-dependent communities. New policies for protecting marine resources are also following this approach. Government agencies, in collaboration with external institutions, are now experimenting with systems of community-based marine resource management through the establishment of non-exclusionary Marine Protected Areas, involving local user groups in both management and benefit regimes. The fugitive nature of marine resources, together with diffuse user groups that cannot be defined as traditional “communities,”... |

The African Process for the Development and Protection of the Coastal and Marine Environment, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, has progressed from mere words and resolutions to concrete action. Through this regional initiative, A f r i c a n countries developed key strategies to address the global oceans and coasts challenges within the overall context of sustainable development. As we prepare for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the biggest event ever to be hosted on African soil, the onus is ever more pressing upon us to realise our responsibilities and to ensure that we actively bring about sustainable development in Africa. We must not lose sight of the overall objectives of the African Process – to eradicate poverty and to ensure... |

CCAMLR is a Convention for the conservation of living marine resources in the Antarctic that manages fisheries taking into account the marine ecosystem. Targets for fishery are krill, toothfish, icefish, squids and crabs. For that purpose, the Commission meets annually and decides upon Conservation measures. It receives scientific advice from its Scientific Committee. The Scientific Committee receives advice and input from its working groups on Ecosystem Monitoring and Management (WG-EMM), on Fish Stock Assessment (WG-FSA), and on Incidental Mortality in Antarctic Fisheries (WG-IMAF). There are also subgroups such as for Protected Areas, Joint Assessment (JAG), Assessment Methods (WG-FSA-SAM), Fisheries Acoustics (WG-FSA-SFA), and others, that are... |

The Red Sea has a number of unique marine habitats, including seagrass beds, saltpans, mangroves, coral reefs and saltmarshes. The Gulf of Aden is a region of oceanic upwelling, resulting in high productivity of fish resources, particularly in the eastern part of the Gulf of Aden. The Socotra Archipelago constitutes a separate ecosystem; the importance of its unique environment and endemic biodiversity is on a par with the Galapagos Islands. The fisheries of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden are of considerable socio-economic importance to the member states of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), in terms of national food security and income generation for rural communities. Fisheries... |

Akpati, B.N.. |
The first phase of a coastal fisheries survey initiated in 1991, with the assistance of the World Bank, was completed in March 1996. The survey found that several inherent parameters are critical to all the main fisheries and these factors severally affect fishing operations. These critical factors include currents as they moderate fish movements and behaviour, lunar cycle, seasonal disruptions, inappropriate improvisation, coastal perturbations, scarcity of fuel wood, menace by trawlers, piracy and increasing costs. Appropriate policies and strategies to redress these critical factors and other disincentives should contribute to evitalising and sustaining small-scale coastal and marine fisheries in Nigeria. The relocation of the institute’s fish farm... |
