ABSTRACT The synthesis of 3,3-disubstituted N-methyloxindoles, starting from 3-acetyl-2-hydroxy-1-methyloxindole employing a sequential one-pot synthesis, is studied. The process involves a first alkylation in the presence of 1 equiv. of both organic halide and Triton B and the second one employs another 1.5 equiv. of each in moderate to high yields. This procedure is compared with the results obtained from the direct dialkylation of N-methyloxindole. The metathesis of one of the corresponding diallylated product was also studied obtaining the spiranic oxindole. All these methodologies are directed towards the access to anticancer agents and natural biologically active products.

ABSTRACT The development of our society has been based on the use of biodiversity, especially for medicines and nutrition. Brazil is the nation with the largest biodiversity in the world accounting for more than 15% of all living species. The devastation of biodiversity in Brazil is critical and may not only cause the loss of species and genes that encode enzymes involved in the complex metabolism of organisms, but also the loss of a rich chemical diversity, which is a potential source for bioeconomy based on natural products and new synthetic derivatives. Bioeconomy focus on the use of bio-based products, instead of fossil-based ones and could address some of the important challenges faced by society. Considering the chemical and biological diversity of...

Mechanisms involved in anti-aging effects of guarana (Paullinia cupana) in Caenorhabditis elegans BJMBR
Arantes,L.P.; Machado,M.L.; Zamberlan,D.C.; da Silveira,T.L.; da Silva,T.C.; da Cruz,I.B.M.; Ribeiro,E.E.; Aschner,M.; Soares,F.A.A..
Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is habitually ingested by people in the Amazon region and is a key ingredient in various energy drinks consumed worldwide. Extension in longevity and low prevalence of chronic age-related diseases have been associated to habitual intake of guarana. Anti-aging potential of guarana was also demonstrated in Caenorhabditis elegans; however, the mechanisms involved in its effects are not clear. Herein, we investigated the putative pathways that regulate the effects of guarana ethanolic extract (GEE) on lifespan using C. elegans. The major known longevity pathways were analyzed through mutant worms and RT-qPCR assay (DAF-2, DAF-16, SKN-1, SIR-2.1, HSF-1). The possible involvement of purinergic signaling was also investigated. Millions of people and animals suffer from superficial infections caused by a group of highly specialized filamentous fungi, the dermatophytes, which only infect keratinized structures. With the appearance of AIDS, the incidence of dermatophytosis has increased. Current drug therapy used for these infections is often toxic, long-term, and expensive and has limited effectiveness; therefore, the discovery of new anti dermatophytic compounds is a necessity. Natural products have been the most productive source for new drug development. This paper provides a brief review of the current literature regarding the presence of dermatophytes in immunocompromised patients, drug resistance to conventional treatments and new anti dermatophytic treatments.
