Despite the importance of nickel (Ni) in the N metabolism of legumes, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is considered very sensitive to Ni doses. The objective in this study was to characterize the toxicity symptoms of Ni in common bean cv. Pérola. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse in the campus of the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense - Darcy Ribeiro, Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ. Solutions containing 0; 20; 40; 60 and 100 mg L-1 of Ni, in the form of nickel chloride hexahydrate (NiCl2.6H2O), were applied to shoots of common bean plants at the rate of 2.5 mL of solution per plant of common bean, 25 days after sowing. Plants of common bean treated with 0; 20; 40 and 60 mg L-1 of Ni showed no toxicity symptoms. Plants treated with 100 mg... |

The goal of this study was to determine the symptoms and microscopic damage caused by fluoride on Spondias dulcis, a fluoride-sensitive species. The plants were exposed to simulated fog with fluoride (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg L-1) for 20 min daily during four consecutive days. Samples from leaflets without any apparent fluoride injury were collected to microscopic analysis. The percentage of necrosed leaf area was measured, and the level of pollutant in the dry matter from the basal and apical portions of the plant was determined. The necroses began 24 h after the first simulation mainly from the base of the leaflets. A higher level of necrosis was observed at the apical portion of the plants, a region of higher fluoride accumulation. The damage on the... |

ABSTRACT Papain is a proteolytic enzyme removed from the leaves of green papaya and/or latex. This enzyme is widely known as a medicinal fruit used extensively in human medicine for the treatment of wounds of various etiologies. However, studies and reports in veterinary medicine are scarce. Another herbal drug widely used in wound healing is Sunflower oil (Helianthus annus). It has inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which stimulate the local neovascularization, promoting tissue granulation, cell migration, fibroblast proliferation, and differentiation. Three dogs were treated with infected necrosis wounds, considered large, extent, and severe, with varied etiology. All cases were treated with papain gel with the exception of one dog, which was... |

We investigated the effects of prolonged heat shock treatment on human embryonic stem cell (hESC) viability. The hESC viability steadily declined with longer exposure to heat shock treatment (43ºC). After 4 h of exposure to heat shock at 43ºC, only 56.2 ± 1.5% of cells were viable. Viability subsequently declined to 37.0 ± 3.3% and 3.5 ± 0.7% after 8 h and 16 h, respectively of heat shock treatment at 43ºC. Transmission electron micrographs showed that the morphology of the dead/dying cells after heat shock treatment was characteristic of cellular necrosis with an uncondensed chromatin and a non-intact plasma membrane. This was further confirmed by flow cytometry analysis which showed that the DNA of the dead/ dying cells was still mostly intact, unlike... |

Cell death is preceded by severe disruption of inorganic ion homeostasis. Seconds to minutes after an injury, calcium, protons, sodium, potassium and chloride are exchanged between the cell and its environment. Simultaneously, ions are shifted between membrane compartments inside the cell, whereby mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum play a crucial role. Depending of the type and severity of injury, two mutually exclusive metastable states can be reached, which predict the final outcome. Cells characterized by large increases in cytosolic [Ca2+], [Na+]; and [Mg2+] swell and die by necrosis; alternatively, cells characterized by high [H+]and low [K+], with normal [Na+] and normal to moderate [Ca2+] increases die by apoptosis. The levels of these ions... |
