Charles Chilton: the Phreatoicoidea and other interests of a phreatic pioneer from down under Naturalis
Hurley, D.E..
Besides his widespread activities in zoology and university development, Charles Chilton (1860—1929) was a pioneer in phreatic research who opened up the possibilities of the new science in the Southern Hemisphere. He described phreatic and subterranean species of Isopoda and Amphipoda from New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere and discussed the significance of their morphology and habitat. His finds included the first species of the widespread endemic Southern Hemisphere group, the Phreatoicoidea, and he pointed to Gondwanaland connections in this and other groups which he accepted and interpreted in the context of his time.

Review of the family Halopterididae (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) Naturalis
Schuchert, P..
All genera and species of the hydrozoan family Halopterididae are reviewed. Where material was available, species are described and figured and the extent of morphological variation is assessed as far as possible. The re-examined material includes samples from the Challenger, Siboga, and Galathea expeditions. Numerous types were re-examined and taxonomic revisions made where necessary. For several nominal species lectotypes are designated. Two new species are described: Antennella kiwiana from New Zealand and Halopteris platygonotheca, a wide spread species from the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Halopteris buskii var. peculiaris (Billard, 1913) is raised to species level as Halopteris peculiaris. Several species are sunk into synonymy: Plumularia balei Billard, 1911...

Agricultural Policy Reform and Industry Adjustment in Australia and New Zealand AgEcon
Harris, David N.; Rae, Allan N..
Some sectors of Australian and New Zealand farming have been heavily assisted in the past. New Zealand underwent an economy-wide deregulation in the mid-to-late 980s that included abrupt removal of practically all agricultural assistance. Policy reform in Australia has been more gradual and is industry focused, but in some cases substantial industry assistance has been withdrawn. Deregulation of the Australian dairy industry, and that of the sheep and beef sector in New Zealand, are discussed as case studies of these deregulations. Conclusions are drawn from these experiences, a major one being that previously-assisted farmers can successfully make the transition to market-driven agriculture.

Fragmenting markets and quality change in New Zealand foods: empirical analysis with a Rotterdam model AgEcon
Khaled, Mohammed; McWha, Vhari; Lattimore, Ralph G..
Very little is known about changes in the demand characteristics of food in New Zealand. As far as we can determine, there has never been a complete disaggregated food demand model estimated for New Zealand. The object of this paper is to update these estimates using more recent data to see whether there are grounds for believing that the structural changes that occurred primarily during the last two decades are having effects on the magnitude of food demand elasticities in New Zealand. To this end, a Rotterdam food demand system is estimated using time series data. The results indicate that over the last 20 years, household consumption has increased for fruit and vegetables, poultry, food eaten away from home, and sweet products, drinks and other foods....

Public Perceptions of New Zealand's Environment AgEcon
Cullen, Ross; Hughey, Kenneth F.D.; Kerr, Geoffrey N..
Beginning in 2000 Lincoln University has completed biennial surveys of people's perceptions of the state of the New Zealand environment. The surveys use the Pressure-State-Response framework for state of the environment reporting to assess resources such as air quality, native plants and animals, native forest and bush, soils, beaches and coastal waters, marine fisheries, marine reserves, freshwaters, national parks, wetlands, urban environments, and the natural environment compared to other developed nations. They also examine participation in environmentally friendly activities, the most important environmental issues facing New Zealanders and a range of other issues. Individual case studies are also undertaken: in 2000 natural hazards; in 2002 the...

Ranking New Zealand river values – a novel approach to managing the ‘chalk and cheese’ problem AgEcon
Hughey, Kenneth F.D..
In New Zealand, regional councils have the task of sustainably managing rivers and their flows. In trying to achieve this task they face enormous challenges including the need to allocate flows amongst often highly disparate in- (e.g., angling, kayaking, native fish and birds) and out-of-river (e.g., irrigation and hydro energy) values/needs. To aid in this task these councils need to know which rivers or parts of rivers are relatively more or less important on national, regional and local bases, for particular values. This task becomes even more challenging given limited information availability for many values, and no overarching policy or decision framework. In this paper I report on a FRST-funded (and less than 1-year long) project which has addressed...

Single Farm Payment in the European Union and its Implications on New Zealand Dairy and Beef Trade AgEcon
Kogler, Klaus; Saunders, Caroline M..
The 2003 reform of the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) replaced the coupled direct support schemes by a Single Farm Payment (SFP), which will be mainly delivered to farmers irrespective of what they produce (hence 'decoupled' from production). The level of decoupling differs among the Member States. This paper assesses the implementation of the SFP across Member States and how far it has been decoupled. The expected changes in the European Union's and New Zealand's trade in dairy products and beef resulting from the 2003 reform of the CAP are simulated, using a partial equilibrium trade model (Lincoln Trade and Environment Model; LTEM).

RiVAS and RiVAS+: Opportunities for Application of a Multi-Criteria River Value Assessment System Approach which Considers Existing and Potential States AgEcon
Hughey, Kenneth F.D.; Sinner, Jim; Booth, Kay.
The River Values Assessment System (RiVAS) uses a combination of expert panels and multi criteria analysis to identify primary attributes (or main features) of river values (e.g., whitewater kayaking, native birds) and their key indicators. The resulting data set is used to rank rivers for their existing (instream) and potential (out-of-stream) significance. The RiVAS method has been applied to seven values and tested across a range of councils with most focus in Tasman District. The tool has demonstrated utility and is very cost effective to implement. Further development has now led to RiVAS+ to consider potential significance for instream values, using the same attributes and indicators, and also identifying the interventions needed to achieve these...

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN AS A BRAND: THE CASE OF NEW ZEALAND LAMB AgEcon
Clemens, Roxanne; Babcock, Bruce A..
New Zealand has used country-of-origin labeling (COOL) as a "“country brand”" to differentiate New Zealand lamb in international markets and increase consumer awareness of this lamb as a high-quality imported product. The case of New Zealand lamb is especially interesting as an unsubsidized commodity product competing against subsidized lamb in some of the most competitive and sophisticated retail markets in the world. Given New Zealand’'s dependence on international markets, producers, processors, and exporters needed to develop strategies to create and maintain a strong positive image for their product. This paper explores the history of New Zealand lamb exports, the focus on quality and meeting consumer specifications, and differences in the use and...

Improving technology uptake for whole-crop cereal silage production AgEcon
Stevens, David R.; Casey, M.J.; Brown, C.D.; Platfoot, G.J..
Rapid dairy industry expansion in the South Island of New Zealand during the 1990’s increased demand for agistment and supplementary feed. Consultants and retailers recognised the ability of whole-crop cereal silage to provide the extra feed required. The local arable industry had declined, creating the opportunity to develop commercial technical support packages from establishment to harvesting for sheep and dairy farmers growing whole-crop cereal silage. Industry technical support packages were supported by ‘just in time’ local research into the growing, making and feeding of whole-crop cereal silage. The package, based on several methods of payment, captured the benefits of new Triticale cultivars. Further investigation into the uptake of whole-crop...

The Value of Backyard Biodiversity in New Zealand AgEcon
Parminter, Terry G.; Kaval, Pamela; Yao, Richard T.; Scrimgeour, Frank G..
New Zealand's biodiversity consists of over 80,000 types of native plants, animals and fungi, a considerable number of which are indigenous and located on private property. To preserve and enhance native biodiversity and discourage activities that may deplete it, economic values can be calculated which can, in turn, guide the use of policy tools, such as incentives, that can be used. This can support behavioural changes by encouraging individual self-interest to coincide with social interest. In this project, we used the contingent valuation, choice modelling and well-being approaches to estimate native biodiversity values for Wellington residents. In this paper, we present a summary of our initial results.

Priorities for, and preferred approaches to, management of New Zealand fresh waters AgEcon
Hughey, Kenneth F.D.; Kerr, Geoffrey N.; Cullen, Ross; Shen, Fujun.
Since 2000 six standardised biennial public surveys of the state of the New Zealand environment have been undertaken. A fresh water case study was included in the 2010 postal survey and in an electronic survey. Desirable futures for New Zealand's fresh water resources, sources of damage to freshwater, preferred management approaches, and views about charges for commercial uses of water are reported. Respondents desire high quality water, are not prepared to trade that off for damaging economic gains, and support charges for commercial uses of water. We report public preferences for tools to manage water use.

Top Performing Farmers are Information Rich: Case Studies of Sheep and Cattle Farmers in the South Island of New Zealand AgEcon
Verissimo, Andrea; Woodford, Keith.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the management behaviours of six top performing sheep and beef farmers from the South Island of New Zealand. Information was obtained through interviews using grounded theory qualitative research methodology. All six farmers were found to be information rich. They source information widely and with a discriminating behaviour. They read widely, typically about one hour per day. They participate in discussion groups but only when relevant information can be obtained. They regularly visit other farms and tend to associate with other high-performing people. They have well developed networks. They have challenging, relevant and achievable goals and targets. All six farmers plan well ahead but with a strong focus on...

Sources of Competitive Advantage in the Uruguayan and New Zealand Beef Industries AgEcon
Serra, Virginia; Woodford, Keith; Martin, Sandra.
The Uruguayan and New Zealand beef industries have developed under similar climatic conditions that favour pastoral farming. Both industries are export focused. However, the development paths taken by the two industries have been different. Porter's diamond is used as a framework for analysing the competitive strengths and weaknesses of each industry. It is concluded that the lower prices received by producers in the Uruguayan industry, linked historically to Uruguay's foot and mouth disease (FMD) status but now caused primarily by tariff issues in the North American market, have been a fundamental problem. This has led to different input-output ratios than have been experienced in New Zealand, and made investment based on intensification less attractive....

ARGOS - Modelling the Economic, Environmental, and Social Implications for New Zealand from Different Scenarios Relating to the Demand and Supply of Organic Products AgEcon
Saunders, Caroline M.; Emanuelsson, Martin.
This paper reports on some of the initial findings of the ARGOS (Agricultural Research Group on (Sustainability) programme, a 6 year quasi-experimental research project with the aim to model the economic, environmental, and social differences between organic, environmentally friendly and conventional systems of production. In the first section the paper reviews the development of organic markets, details the production costs and reports some preliminary results from ARGOS. The information is then used to develop potential future scenarios relating to the organic sector, which are assessed using the Lincoln Trade and Environment Model (LTEM), a partial equilibrium trade model that differentiates between organic and conventional production methods. Valuing agricultural externalities in Canterbury rivers and streams AgEcon
Tait, Peter R.; Cullen, Ross; Bicknell, Kathryn.
Water quality and quantity concerns in Canterbury are intrinsically related to agriculture. Monetary values for impacts on streams and rivers is lacking in policy debate. This paper employs choice modelling to estimate values of three impacts on rivers and streams in Canterbury associated with agriculture: health risks of E coli from animal waste, ecological effects of excess nutrients, and low-flow impacts of irrigation. This study provides a valuation of outcomes for public policy implemented in Canterbury such as The Dairy and Clean Streams Accord, Living Streams, and The Restorative Programme for Lowland Streams.

Integrated Assessment Modelling of Complexity in the New Zealand Farming Industry AgEcon
Olubode-Awosola, Femi.
As New Zealand farming industry pursues more productivity this has implication for environment and makes land use and agricultural policy decision processes more complex for which integrated assessment modeling (IAM) can support. The purpose of this review paper is to propose means through which IAM can be improved specifically to minimize uncertainties and increase relevance, reliability, and utility of outputs of different models. Literature suggests that the general motivation for land use change is that farmers do consider the environment, but need to maintain profitability. There are handful decision support tools for land use and land policy decisions but one common feature of most of the models is that each seems suitable for only a part of the...
