The Amazon has a high diversity of fungi, including species of the genus Daldinia (Ascomycota, Xylariaceae), which produce secondary metabolites with recognized nematicidal and antimicrobial activity. The ecological role of Daldinia is important, as stromata serve as refuges to many insects and arthropodes, and the fungi contribute to the degradation of vegetable organic matter. The aim of this study was to analyze the taxonomic features and mycelial growth conditions in vitro of a Daldinia specimen collected in the Brazilian Amazon. Morphological and molecular studies of the fungus identified it as D. eschscholtzii. To evaluate mycelial growth, we cultivated the fungus at 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 °C in malt extract-peptone agar (MEPA), malt extract-peptone... |

ABSTRACT Thaumastocoris peregrinus (Hemiptera, Thaumastocoridae) is a phytophagous pest of eucalyptus plantations. It was introduced in Brazil in 2008, and expanded rapidly due to its adaptive capacity to different climatic conditions. Eucalyptus has been planted in the Brazilian Amazon since the 1980s, being used in silvopastoral systems and for cellulose production. Since its introduction in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, T. peregrinus has expanded its geographical distribution to 117 municipalities in states in the south (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná), southeast (São Paulo, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais), mid-west (Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás) and northeast (Sergipe) of the country. Here we... |

The present work aims to determine the spatial distribution pattern of Protium Burm. f and the diametric structure of these species in a dense tropical submontane rainforest along the Sustainable Development Reserve (SDR) of the Iratapuru river. The area of study was divided into three plateau compartments called Mane Preto Sierra, Banco Grande Sierra and Alaska Sierra. In each plateau compartment it was settled a single area transect with 1,000 x 20 m, where DAP ≥ 10 cm of the entire Protium population within the transects was measured. The data was processed in the specific software Mata Nativa 2. There were inventoried Protium tenuifolium, Protium altsoni, Protium polybotryum subsp. blackii and Protium paniculatum var. riedelianum. Most individuals... |

Insects associated with sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas were surveyed at Ituporanga Experimental Station, EPAGRI S.A., Santa Catarina State, Brazil, from 1991 to 1994. Astylus variegatus Germ. (Coleoptera: Dasytidae) and Chaetocnema apricaria Suffr. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) were abundant throughout the crop cycle. The complex of Homoptera (Aphididae: Pemphigida e and Cicadellidae), Diabrotica speciosa Germ., and Typophorus nigritus versutus Lef. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) were constantly present but at lower levels than A. variegatus and C. apricaria. Systena sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomeliadae) and Lagria villosa Fabr. (Coleoptera: Lagriidae), were casual and occurred at low frequency. |

Stranded cetaceans have scientific value and may confirm the occurrence of some species or indicate their geographical distribution in an area. The collection of biological material can also contribute to improve the knowledge of the species or populations inhabiting certain areas. This study aimed to record live or dead cetaceans found ashore along the coast of Ilhéus, Bahia State, northeastern Brazil. Data were collected through a campaign called "SOS strandings, whales, porpoises and dolphins." Between 1997 and 1999 three hundred posters and five hundred folders were distributed to beach huts, shops, fishing associations and settlements, the city's municipal government, the Brazilian Environmental Agency (IBAMA) and fire stations. During this campaign,... |

The lizard, Cercosaura ocellata, with its type-locality suggested as being South America's Northeast, is widely distributed in the North and Midwest regions of Brazil, with scarcity of records for the states in the Northeast Region. This work aims to enlarge the geographical distribution of this species. An individual of C. ocellata was registered in a fragment of Atlantic Rain Forest, Mata de Tejipió (08° 05′ 45.59″ S, 34° 57′ 04.91″ W). This register expands its distribution 585 km north and 770 km south, respectively from its closest locations, Bahia and Ceará, filling a gap of disjunct distribution of approximately 900 km in the northeast region of the country. |

This study describes the occurrence of the phytophilous cladoceran Celsinotum candango, which has been considered, up to now, an endemic species of the Brazilian Cerrado, with only two previous records in the wetlands of Brasilia, Federal District. The cladoceran has now been registered at Coutos Lake (“Lagoa dos Coutos”), an altitudinal, temporary shallow lake, located in ironstone outcrops at Serra do Gandarela, Minas Gerais state. This mountain ridge was recently turned into an integral protection conservation unit, the Gandarela National Park. However, many shallow lakes, including this one, were excluded from the delimited area of the park, and are now at risk of disappearing due to expansion of mining activities. The information provided here reveals... |

The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica (Treub, 1885) Chitwood, 1949, was identified in roots, nodules and shells of peanut plants (Arachis hypogaea L.), cv. Florman-INTA, collected from a field in Menno colony, Chaco Central region of Paraguay. Infected plants were observed in patches, showing wilting and drying of vegetative parts. Peanut had been grown ininterruptly for many years in the same area and patches had already been observed in the preceding year in cv. Starr. Nematodes collected from roots in this field reproduced on tomato cultivar rutgers and peanut cultivar florunner and produced egg-masses on roots, nodules and shells of cultivar Florman. This is the first report on M. javanica parasiting peanut in Paraguay. |

The number of research papers (128 papers) on mycotoxins published by Brazilian researchers in 1991-2000 surpassed the total number (85 papers) published in the preceding three decades (1961-1990). Thirty percent of the papers surveyed mycotoxins in foods and feeds. AFs in peanut and peanut products continued to be alarming, and high incidence and levels of FBs in corn and corn products also appeared as a serious problem. Contamination with other toxins, such as ZEA, OTA and trichothecenes, was low. Occurrence of AFM1 in milk and dairy products and patulin in apple juice needs to be verified as the results are somewhat diverging. Work on analytical methods, mycological examination and toxic effects constituted 16, 13 and 13%, respectively, of the published... |
