The effects of a fogging system on the control of the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) were studied in greenhouse cultivation of eggplant, cucumber and strawberry during the period 1999-2006. At the beginning the pest and the phytoseiid predator Phytoseiulus persimilis were released on the crops and then observations were made on the development of the populations of both mites. Fogging system effects were found in terms of lowering the T. urticae population and hindering the growth of powdery mildew fungus. Furthermore there was a yield increase in the cases of strawberry and cucumber in 2001 but no negative impact on pest management was ever detected, particularly on the biological control of the melon aphid (Aphis gossypii) achieved using... |

I 2012 fortsatte undersøgelserne. |

Broad-leaved dock (Rumex obtusifolius L., Polygonaceae) is an agronomically important perennial weed causing decreases in pasture yields and fodder quality. Non-chemical control measures for dock are often limited to frequent pulling and cutting, additionally it is usually avoided by grazing animals. Here, the regeneration of R. obtusifolius in a Rumex-infested grassland grazed by a sheep breed that explicitly feeds on dock (Ovis aries L. cv. East Prussian Skudden) was compared to cutting. Therefore, regeneration of 90 R. obtusifolius plants of three different size classes was monitored in three plots during three grazing and cutting cycles. Plant height and number of fruit-stands of regrown R. obtusifolius was significantly lower, number of... |

More and more organic farmers lift potatoes which are damaged by wireworms (Agriotes spec. and Hemicrepidus niger). A nationwide status quo-analysis was carried out by the Chamber of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2002 and 2003. The survey included an intensive literature research, a questionnaire with 26 questions, on-site assessments, and on-farm trials. It was noticed that a long period of grass-clover cultivation in the crop rotation had a negative effect on the quality of potato tubers. Peas and lupines seemed to be the better pre-crops for a good quality of tubers in contrast to field beans and red clover. An autumn fertilization with manure resulted in a low feeding damage on potatoes by wireworms. Many perennial weeds some like... |

Many growers of organic strawberry and raspberry have large losses in yield and reduced quality of their products because of insect damage. For many insects species pheromones and host plant volatiles are of major importance in mate finding and host plant location. In this project we want to extend our knowledge of these systems to develop effective control measures to control these pests in organic crops. The focus will be on the strawberry blossom weevil, the European tarnish plant bug and the raspberry beetle. |

Novel organic fungicides and elicitors against downy mildew on grapevines were evaluated on grapevine seedlings in a series of indoor screening experiments under controlled conditions and, if they have shown a good efficacy indoors, in a screening vineyard under field conditions. From 39 products tested under controlled conditions 10 were further examined under field conditions. All of the new products tested under field conditions showed at least partial efficacy. However, the efficacy was not good enough to protect grapevine plants sufficiently from downy mildew. For a complete re-placement of copper in plant protection against downy mildew on grapevine in organic agriculture, additional new products are needed. |

The aim of the trials was to test potential plant extracts for control of apple sawfly. The products Quassia-MD, NeemAzal T/S and Tracer were selected for testing. All 3 substances are allowed in organic production according to EU Regulation 837/2007, but use in Denmark requires that the products are approved by Miljøstyrelsen as a pesticide, but none of the products have been approved until now. |

We have studied the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from young strawberry plants, cultivars Polka and Honeoye, after feeding by several strawberry herbivores under laboratory conditions. VOC profile of strawberry plants is highly dominated by green leaf volatiles (GLVs), which are released also due to mechanical damage. Our results reveal that strawberry has potential for inducible VOC defence, and this encourages testing the attractiveness of these strawberry VOCs to predatory mites. |
