Introduction to the current EU regulation on health claims, with special reference to berries Organic Eprints
Sarkkinen, Essi.
In the regulation claims are divided into two main categories: nutrition and health claims. In the future only claims that are positively pre-evaluated by EFSA are allowed to be used in commercial communication (all means). Regulation will uniform the use of health claims also in berry production in EU and will hopefully increase the awareness on established health benefits of berries.

EU organic logo and its perception by consumers Organic Eprints
Zander, Katrin; Padel, Susanne; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Purpose – With the introduction of the mandatory European Union (EU) organic logo for all organic food products in 2010, the European Commission aimed at fostering the internal organic food market. This needs consumers’ knowledge of the logo. According to earlier research consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo is low. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to elicit consumers’ attitudes towards organic certification and labelling and to develop recommendations on how to improve consumers’ knowledge of the EU organic logo. Design/methodology/approach – By means of an online survey with 3,000 participants in six European countries, knowledge of the logo and attitudes towards organic farming and European labelling, as well as organic food purchase...

Analysis of regulatory framework and standards applied to organic wine-making in Europe Organic Eprints
Jonis, Monique; Monnier, Marie Christine; Micheloni, Cristina; Schmid, Otto; Hoffman, Uwe.
Because wines (of grapes) were excluded from the scope of EC Regulation 2092/91 (annex 6, concerning processing organic food, does not apply to wine) concerning organic farming, up till now there is no legal definition for organic wines at European level, but only rules for organic grapes production. This project: ORWINE, is aiming to help the UE commission to develop a legislative framework for the transformation of organic grapes into organic wine. This would allow replacing the current definition “wine made from organically grown grapes” by “organic wines”. One of the first tasks of this project is a description of the regulatory framework applied to EU organic wine-making. Legal public and private standards for wine processing are taken in...

Measuring the risk of non-compliance in Italian organic farms with parametric and non parametric models Organic Eprints
Gambelli, Danilo; Solfanelli, Francesco; Zanoli, Raffaele.
Certification is an essential feature for organic products, and is based on controls/inspections to verify compliance with EU Reg. CE 834/07. Implementing a risk based inspection system can contribute to an effective and efficient organic control system, hence improving organic farming relative competitiveness. This study is part of the CERCOST EU project, and analyses data from inspections on a sample of Italian organic farms, aiming at the identification of management and structural risk factors contributing to the occurrence of non-compliances. Risk analysis is based on the estimation of both parametric and non-parametric models using negative binomial panel estimators and Bayesian network modelling.

Mögliche Auswirkungen der novellierten Drittlandsimportregelung der EU-Öko-Verordnung (EG) Nr. 834/ 2007 - Einschätzung anhand einer Expertenbefragung - Organic Eprints
Jawtusch, Julia.

Organic Eprints
Zambaux, Pauline; Melot, Romain; Aubry, C..

The Organic Market in Europe. Overview and Market Access Information for Producers and International Trading Companies. Fourteen Country Examples in the European Free Trade Association and the European Union, with a Special Focus on Switzerland Organic Eprints
Kilcher, Lukas; Willer, Helga; Huber, Beate; Frieden, Claudia; Schmutz, Res; Schmid, Otto.
From the Foreword by Luks Kilcher, FiBL More than thirty-seven million hectares of agricultural land are managed organically by nearly 1.8 million producers. About one-third of the world’s organic land – 13.4 million hectares – is located in emerging markets and markets in transition. Global sales reached 55 billion USD in 2009, more than doubling in value from 25 billion USD in 2003. Europe is after the USA the second largest organic market in the world with a turnover of 26 billion USD in 2009. These figures increase year by year and such facts impressively illustrate the powerful development of the organic production and market all over the world. Behind these figures lie a large number of benefits and impacts, which are the motor for this...

Die Öko-Zertifizierung in Deutschland aus Sicht der Produzenten: Handlungsvorschläge zur politischen Weiterentwicklung Organic Eprints
Schulze, Holger; Jahn, Gabriele; Neuendorff, Jochen; Spiller, Achim.

Analysis of non-compliances in the organic certification system in Turkey Organic Eprints
Zanoli, Raffaele; Gambelli, Danilo; Bruschi, Viola.
Organic farming in Turkey is experiencing a strong growth in recent years, with a particular attention to export towards Europe. International and domestic trade opportunities require an efficient control system for organic products. In this paper we analyse the data from inspections of two European control bodies in Turkish farms to analyse risk patterns of non-compliance with the organic regulation. A proportion test is performed to identify the types of crops that are more likely related to non-compliant operators.

Policy for organic farming: Rationale and concepts Organic Eprints
Stolze, Matthias; Lampkin, Nicolas.
Since the mid 1980s, organic farming has become the focus of significant attention from policy-makers, consumers, environmentalists and farmers in Europe and state institutions have become increasingly involved in regulating and supporting the organic sector. Reflecting the multiple goals for organic farming and for agricultural policy, a varied and complex range of policy measures have been developed and implemented to support the organic sector. However, balancing societal and consumer/market goals and balancing institutional and private stakeholder interests in the organic sector present particular challenges for policy-making. The key issues of current organic farming policy addressed in this special issue therefore specifically consider the two...
