Aspects of biology of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Gastropoda, Acavoidea) in the coastal plain of the Brazilian southeast Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fontenelle,José H.; Miranda,Marcel S..
ABSTRACT We studied the reproductive biology of Megalobulimus paranaguensis (Pilsbry & Ihering, 1900), a large and long-lived land gastropod from the Atlantic Rainforest of Brazil. The study was conducted at an urban park in the city of Santos, state of São Paulo. For 4 years, we counted the egg postures and annual eclosion rate of 32 captive snails and looked for associations between egg posture and the climatical variables of the period. The annual mean posture of 8.7 eggs per snail obtained in our results is a small number, but typical of Brazilian macromollusks. The annual eclosion rate was 31%. The beginning of the annual activity period of snails occurred in the middle of March, and lasted 33.97±3.02 weeks. The dormancy period started in the...

Polyphasic growth in fish: a case study with Corydoras paleatus (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Barradas,José R. S.; Lermen,Isabel S.; Larré,Gabriel G.; Martins,Thaís P.; Fontoura,Nelson F..
ABSTRACT A weight-length relationship was established for Corydoras paleatus (Jenyns, 1842) (Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) (n=596) from samples taken in November-December 2009 and March-April 2010, in Pinguela Lagoon (29°46'57"S; 50°11'16"W), Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The species showed a polyphasic allometric growth pattern, each stanza described by an independent power equation controlled by a switch function: W = a1Lb1 ∙ (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1 + a2Lb2 ∙ [1 - (1 + eRsc ∙ (L-SCP))-1] ; where W is the expected weight for a specific length L, a1 and a2 are the proportionality coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, b1 and b2 are the allometric coefficients for stanzas 1 and 2, Rsc is the stanza changing rate for the switch function and SCP is the stanza changing...

Reproductive biology of Leptodactylus fuscus (Anura, Leptodactylidae) in the subtropical climate, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Maragno,Franciéle P.; Cechin,Sonia Z..
The aim of this study was to characterize, for the central region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, the reproductive biology of Leptodactylus fuscus (Schneider, 1799), based on the analysis of gonadal development of males and females, reproductive effort, size-fecundity relationships, and occurrence of sexual dimorphism in body size. Mature individuals were found from October 1996 to February 1997 and from October 1997 to December 1997. The highest input of juveniles in the population was recorded in March 1997. There was a positive and significant correlation between the number of mature individuals and the mean monthly temperature. The population did not present sexual dimorphism in size. Males presented significant correlation only between...

Abundance, breeding and food of the Little Blue Heron Egretta caerulea (Aves, Ardeidae) in the Patos Lagoon estuary, a recently colonized area in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gianuca,Dimas; Gianuca,Andros T.; Vooren,Carolus M..
We document the expansion of the breeding distribution of the Little Blue Heron Egretta caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) to 850 km beyond its previous southern limit in South America. In addition we present data on abundance, breeding biology and food of the species in the Patos Lagoon estuary, the area which the species recently colonized. The maximum abundance recorded in the breeding colony and in a nocturnal roosting site was 53 and 49 individuals respectively. Nesting occurred from September to March. Birds nested in a mixed breeding colony together with about 3,000 breeding pairs of seven other species of Pelecaniformes, in a swampy forest near the margin of the estuary. Five nests were between 1.5 and 4.3 m from the ground, on the shrub Daphnopsis racemosa...

Dinâmica reprodutiva de Oligosarcus jenynsii e O. robustus (Characiformes, Characidae) na lagoa Fortaleza, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Nunes,Daniela M.; Pellanda,Mateus; Hartz,Sandra Maria.
Oligosarcus jenynsii (Günther, 1864) and O. robustus Menezes, 1969 are fish species distributed in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. The reproductive period and recruitment, sex ratio, absolute and relative fecundity, and body length at first gonadal maturation of the two carnivorous species from Fortaleza Lagoon were analized. The specimens were sampled monthly, from May 2000 to April 2001, with fishing effort of 24 hours/month, using stationary gillnets of different mesh sizes and seine net (three samples per edge). The records of each individual included total length, total weight, gonad weight, sex and gonadal maturity stage. The reproductive period of both O. jenynsii and O. robustus ranges from May/June to November/December,...

Reproductive ecology of the invader species gekkonid lizard Hemidactylus mabouia in an area of southeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Anjos,Luciano A.; Rocha,Carlos Frederico D..
Hemidactylus mabouia Moreau de Jonnés, 1818 is a "fixed" clutch size exotic species well established in Brazil. In this paper we investigate some reproductive strategies adopted to minimize the costs of invariant clutch size to this invader species living in an environment with marked climatic seasonality in Southeastern Brazil (22°56’S; 46°55’W). The study was carried out from April 2002 to March 2003. Females and males attain maturity at 47.9mm and 46.9mm SVL, respectively. Larger females tended to produce larger eggs. The reproduction occurred throughout the year, but only at the wet season the females increase the clutch frequency. There was a significant variation in mean testis volume among the months throughout the year and the largest means were...

Estágios de desenvolvimento gonadal de fêmeas do camarão-barba-ruça (Artemesia longinaris - Decapoda: Penaeidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Dumont,Luiz Felipe Cestari; D'Incao,Fernando.
The stages of gonadal development for the female of "barba-ruça" shrimp (Artemesia longinaris Bate, 1888) were characterized based on histological analysis. Four stages (immature, almost mature, ripe and spawned) were determined according to the structure and arrangement of cells in the ovary. Each stage corresponds macroscopically to a characteristic color, except stages I (immature) and IV (spawned), in which colors are very similar and can be distinguished only microscopically. The chromatic scale varies from white/translucent (stage I), neutral green (almost mature) to dark green (ripe). The mean size of cells was 56.9 µm (±3.5) (stage I), 127 µm (±2.6) (stage II) and 183 µm (±1.91) (stage III). The size frequency of cells was polimodal, and different...

Reproductive biology and sexual dimorphism in Cnemidophorus vacariensis (Sauria, Teiidae) in the grasslands of the Araucaria Plateau, southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Rezende-Pinto,Fabíola M.; Verrastro,Laura; Zanotelli,Juliana C.; Barata,Paulo C. R..
The reproductive cycle and sexual dimorphism of the lizard Cnemidophorus vacariensis Feltrim & Lema, 2000 were studied on the basis of data gathered between August 2004 and August 2006 in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Snout-vent length (SVL) of sexually mature males varied between 48.8 and 72.9 mm (x = 63.3 ± 6.0 mm; n = 76) and, for females, between 57.4 and 81.8 mm (x = 70.0 ± 5.9 mm; n = 73). Other morphological characteristics were also compared between sexes. Reproduction was seasonal, and observations indicate two clutches in the same reproductive season. Clutch size and other reproductive characteristics were analyzed as well as the relation between reproduction and environmental factors. Cnemidophorus vacariensis is apparently endemic...

Reproductive biology of the sesarmid crab Armases rubripes (Decapoda, Brachyura) from an estuarine area of the Sahy River, Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Lima,Giovana V.; Soares,Marcelo R. S.; Oshiro,Lídia M.Y..
The aim of this work was to gain knowledge about reproductive biology of the crab Armases rubripes (Rathbun, 1897) from an estuarine area of the Sepetiba Bay. Samples were taken monthly from February 2003 to January 2004 in the Sahy River estuary (22º56'S; 44º01'W), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The crabs were collected by hand during 15-minute catch-effort sessions conducted by two people. In the laboratory, the specimens were separated by sex, carapace width was measured and gonadal stage was checked macroscopically. A total of 830 individuals were caught - 304 males, 373 females (60 ovigerous females) and 153 juveniles. The ovigerous females were found almost year-round, except in November and April, showing a continuous reproductive period. They presented a...

Ecology and natural history of Akodon lindberghi (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) in southeastern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Queirolo,Diego; Granzinolli,Marco A. M..
We studied the ecology and natural history of the globally threatened and poorly known Akodon lindberghi Hershkovitz, 1990 in Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra (PNSC) and Juiz de Fora (JF), southeastern Brazil. From November 1998 to September 2001 a total of 131 individuals were captured in wire-cage live-traps and 52 by pitfalls traps. They were all marked and released at the site. The largest abundances were registered during the dry season, and most of the captures occurred in open habitats. The mean body mass of the two populations was significantly different (18.1 g at PNSC versus 13.1 g at JF; H = 46.2678, g.l.=2, p<0.001). In PNSC, individuals were reproductively active from August to February, and juveniles were present from May to August....

Microhabitats de mosquitos (Diptera, Culicidae) em internódios de taquara na Mata Atlântica, Paraná, Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Lozovei,Ana Leuch.
During two consecutive years, from January 1985 to December 1986, a comparative study of mosquitoes preferences for breeding habitat was carried out in the Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar, Paraná State, Brazil. To achieve it, 1875 bamboo internodes aligned vertically in live green, bamboo plants Merostachys speciosa Munro and Merostachys sp. were used, in which metabolic water was exuded from the plant itself, and presenting different size/pattern holes at their lateral walls, bored by the local sylvan fauna. Another group of 1200 individual internode traps was used as comparative element, carved out with a transversal cut by a saw, filled with local stream water and held in branches at different heights in the vegetal strata nearby. At both...

Reproductive modes and fecundity of an assemblage of anuran amphibians in the Atlantic rainforest, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Hartmann,Marilia T; Hartmann,Paulo A; Haddad,Célio F. B.
Reproductive modes and size-fecundity relationships are described for anurans from Picinguaba, a region of Atlantic rainforest on the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. We observed 13 reproductive modes, confirming a high diversity of modes in the Atlantic rainforest. This diversity of reproductive modes reflects the successful use of diversified and humid microhabitats by anurans in this biome. We measured the snout-vent length of 715 specimens of 40 species of anurans. The size-fecundity relationship of 12 species was analyzed. Female snout-vent lengths explained between 57% and 81% of clutch size variation. Anurans with aquatic modes laid more eggs than those with terrestrial or arboreal modes. Larger eggs were deposited by species with...

Reprodução de peixes (Osteichthyes) em afluentes do reservatório de Volta Grande, Rio Grande, Sudeste do Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Braga,Francisco Manoel de Souza.
The most abundant species caught in the tributaries of the Volta Grande dam, Buriti, Divisa and Água Comprida streams were Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840), Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède 1803, Myleus tiete (Eigenmann & Norris, 1900), Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) and A. fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819). Plagioscion squamosissimus and Pimelodus maculatus do not have reproduction activity in the area, they just use the creeks to food and growth. Myleus tiete and Astyanax bimaculatus use the area to reproduction whereas A. fasciatus uses it to reproduction, food and growth.
