Szareski,Vinícius Jardel; Carvalho,Ivan Ricardo; Kehl,Kassiana; Levien,Alexandre Moscarelli; Nardino,Maicon; Dellagostin,Simone Morgan; Demari,Gustavo Henrique; Lautenchleger,Francine; Villela,Francisco Amaral; Pedó,Tiago; Souza,Velci Queiróz de; Aumonde,Tiago Zanatta.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the adaptability and multi-trait stability of wheat (Triticum aestivum) genotypes according to the phenotypic index of seed vigor (PIV). Thirty wheat genotypes were grown in seven environments in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, during one crop season. In each environment, a randomized complete block design with three replicates was used. The PIV was elaborated from the following traits: first germination count, germination percentage, accelerated aging, and electrical conductivity. The evaluated phenotypic index makes it possible to define macroenvironments for the production of wheat seeds with high physiological potential and to understand the implications of the genotype x environment...

Description of a pure seed fraction of oat through usual evaluations and radiographic images PAB
Craviotto,Roque Mario; Yoldjian,Ana Maria; Salinas,Adriana Rita; Arango,Miriam Raquel; Bisaro,Vilma; Maturo,Hernán.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the width and length incidence in a single seed fraction of oat [Avena sativa (L.)] cv. Cristal. The seeds were selected by a mechanical divider and by hand, and their correspondence to radiographic images in seeds with glumes and their caryopses. The width and length of the seeds with glumes and their caryopses were measured with electronic calliper, and their weight, with precision balance. Radiographic images of seeds with glumes were taken with an X-ray experimental equipment. The analyst selected seeds with glumes by the width and by the length previously determined and so with more weight, than that obtained by hand selection was slightly narrower, larger and lighter. The presence of the glumes masked the...

Delivering Seeds of 'Orphan' Crops: The Case Studies of Potato and Groundnut in India AgEcon
Pal, Suresh; Singh, Harbir; Mathur, Prasoon.
This paper examines the performance of the Indian seed system in the context of high volume, low value seed, using the case studies of potato and groundnut. In theory, public sector should be able to address seed needs of farmers growing these crops. However, the ability of the public sector is constrained by a number of institutional and technical factors, and farmers largely depend upon traditional sources of seed. The traditional sources meet more than two-thirds of the total seed demand , and the rest is met by the formal seed system, mainly public seed agencies. Most of the farmers buy fresh seed for quality reasons, and only 12-15 percent farmers purchase seed to change variety. In potato, technological innovation provided options to enhance...

Test of exudates color hues for evaluating the physiological potential of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) seeds Rev. bras. sementes
Hilst,Paulo Cesar; Dias,Denise Cunha Fernandes dos Santos; Alvarenga,Eveline Mantovani; Souza,Bruna Luiza de.
Coffee seeds have slow and irregular germination, losing fast their viability during storage, and the standard germination test of these seeds requires at least 30 days. Besides, the results may not reflect the actual physiological quality of these seeds. The objective of this work was to develop a fast and practical test for evaluating the viability of coffee seeds, which is based on the interpretation of different color hues of exudates from seeds. Coffee seeds of the cultivar Catuai 44 from six lots were submitted to germination, accelerated aging, and electrical conductivity tests. In the exudates color hue test, coffee seeds without the parchment and the silvery pellicle (four replications of 10 seeds each) were distributed on top of paper towels...

Mondo,Vitor Henrique Vaz; Gomes Junior,Francisco Guilhien; Pinto,Taís Leite Ferreira; Marchi,José Luis de; Motomiya,Anamari Viegas de Araújo; Molin,José Paulo; Cicero,Silvio Moure.
The correlation of soil fertility x seed physiological potential is very important in the area of seed technology but results published with that theme are contradictory. For this reason, this study to evaluate the correlations between soil chemical properties and physiological potential of soybean seeds. On georeferenced points, both soil and seeds were sampled for analysis of soil fertility and seed physiological potential. Data were assessed by the following analyses: descriptive statistics; Pearson's linear correlation; and geostatistics. The adjusted parameters of the semivariograms were used to produce maps of spatial distribution for each variable. Organic matter content, Mn and Cu showed significant effects on seed germination. Most variables...

Evaluation of lignin content of soybean seed coat stored in a controlled environment Rev. bras. sementes
Krzyzanowski,Francisco Carlos; Franca Neto,José de Barros; Mandarino,Jose Marcos Gontijo; Kaster,Milton.
Breeding soybean for high seed quality is an important approach for developing cultivars for tropical regions, and the lignin content in the seed coat is one of the screening parameters for this trait. Considering that many breeding lines are evaluated in each growing season using the presently recommended method for lignin determination, a long period is required for the evaluation of the whole breeding program. This time limitation may influence lignin content assessment, if lignin is degraded during storage. This research reported was designed to determine whether lignin was degraded in the seed coat of soybean seed cultivars stored for one year in a controlled environment (10°C temperature and 50% air relative humidity). Seeds of 12 selected soybean...

Efficiency of methods to detect Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in commercial soybean seed lots Rev. bras. sementes
Henneberg,Luciane; Jaccoud Filho,David de S.; Ruaro,Lucimeris; Panobianco,Maristela.
Most soybean pathogens are seed transmitted, deserving emphasis the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, which has been presenting worrying levels of field incidence in some soybean cropping areas in several Brazilian states. The objective of this study was to verify the efficiency of different methods for detecting S. sclerotiorum on soybean seeds artificially infected in the laboratory and from field production areas with a historical disease incidence. Seed samples of seven different cultivars collected from naturally infested fields, and one seed sample artificially inoculated in the laboratory were used. The following detection methods recommended in the literature were compared: Blotter test at 7 ºC, 14 ºC, and 21 ºC; Rolled Paper; and Neon-S. Results...

Menezes,Nilson Lemos de; Cicero,Sílvio Moure; Villela,Francisco Amaral; Bortolotto,Rafael Pivotto.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of X-rays in identifying fissures in artificially dried rice seeds and the relationship between damage and seed performance in the germination test. Irrigated rice seeds of the IRGA 417 and IRGA 420 cultivars were harvested with 23.3 and 24.5% water content respectively and submitted to stationary drying treatments at 32, 38, 44 and 50 °C. X-rays were taken of subsamples of 100 seeds for each treatment, using an MX-20 X-ray equipment. The X-rayed seeds were classified from 1 to 3, where 1 corresponded to seeds without fissures, 2 to seeds with non-severe fissures and 3 to seeds with severe fissures. The same X-rayed seeds were planted and on the seventh day the seedlings (normal or abnormal)...

Incidence of green soybean seeds as a function of environmental stresses during seed maturation Rev. bras. sementes
Pádua,Gilda Pizzolante De; França-Neto,José De Barros; Carvalho,Maria Laene Moreira De; Krzyzanowski,Francisco Carlos; Guimarães,Renato Mendes.
Hot and dry weather conditions during soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] seed maturation can cause forced maturation of the seed, resulting in the production of high levels of green seed, which may be detrimental to seed germination. These stressful conditions were imposed on soybean plants during seed maturation to investigate the production of green seeds and seed quality. Plants of the CD 206 cultivar were grown in a greenhouse until the R5.5 growing stage and then transferred to phytotrons at R6 and R7.2 for stress induction. Plants were subjected to two temperature regimes, high (28ºC to 36ºC) and normal (19ºC to 26ºC), and four soil water availability conditions, control (adequate water supply), 30% gravimetric moisture (GM), 20% GM and no water...

Radiographic analysis in castor bean seeds (Ricinus communis L.) Rev. bras. sementes
Carvalho,Maria Laene Moreira de; Alves,Renato Augusto; Oliveira,Luciana Magda De..
Castor bean cropping has great social and economic value, but its production has been affected by factors such as low quality seeds used for sowing. The quick and precise evaluation of seed quality by x-ray test is known as an effective method to evaluate seed lots, but little is known about the interpretation between of the type of radiographic image and the seed quality correlation. The potential of x-ray analysis as a marker of seed physiological quality and as an initial process for the implementation of the use of computer-assisted image analysis was investigated using castor bean seeds of the different cultivars. The seeds were classified according to internal morphology visualized in the radiography and subjected to the germination test, emergency...

Viability of recently harvested and stored Xylopia aromatica (Lam.) Mart. (Annonaceae) seeds Rev. bras. sementes
Socolowski,Fábio; Cicero,Silvio Moure; Vieira,Daniela Cristine Mascia.
Xylopia aromatica is a native species from Brazil's "Cerrado", recommended for restoration ecology and also as a medicine. Its seeds have embryos with morphophysiological dormancy, making nursery propagation difficult. The objective of this study was to verify the efficiency of X-ray and tetrazolium tests for evaluating the viability of three seed lots, stored for different periods. All seeds were X-rayed (13 kV, 350 seconds) and samples used for tetrazolium and germination tests. In the tetrazolium test, seeds were submitted to six treatments at two temperatures (25 and 30 °C) with imbibition in distilled water and immersion in three concentrations of tetrazolium solution (0.5, 0.75 and 1%) at the two imbibition temperatures. Seeds for the germination...
