Capture sequence and relative abundance of bats during surveys Rev. Bras. Zool.
Esbérard,Carlos E. L..
It is expected that rare species will be gradually added to biodiversity surveys over time and that complete inventories will include rare species. The objective in the present work is to test whether the capture sequence of species during a bat survey is related to species abundance. Species with capture rates lower than 0.01x10-3 captures/hour-net were considered rare. At Ilha da Gipóia, rare species accounted for 22.22% of the total and, at Rio das Pedras Reserve, they represented 30.00%. The existence of a negative relationship between the relative abundance and the first night of capture of each species for the Ilha da Gipóia and the high significance level for the accumulation curve at both localities suggest that the documentation of a large number...

Population biology of spine shrimp Exhippolysmata oplophoroides (Holthuis) (Caridea, Hippolytidae) in a subtropical region, São Paulo, Brazil Zoologia
Fransozo,Vivian; Costa,Rogério C.; Bertini,Giovana; Cobo,Valter J..
The population biology of Exhippolysmata oplophoroides (Holthuis, 1948) was studied in Ubatuba Bay (23º26'S, 45º02'W), Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, from September/1995 to August/1996. Each sampling comprised eight transects (14 000 m² each), sampled monthly with three repetitions. The specimens were classified with respect to the presence or absence of eggs in the abdominal appendages. Spine-shrimps occurred only on six transects, being most abundant on transect II, with the highest incidence in late spring and throughout the summer months. Ovigerous and non-ovigerous shrimps were present year-round, in an approximately similar proportion (1:1). Site II in Ubatuba Bay is characterized by high salinity and oxygen values, temperature between 26 and 29ºC, low...

Diversity and abundance of litter frogs at altitudinal sites at Serra do Japi, southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Giaretta,Ariovaldo Antonio; Sawaya,Ricardo J.; Machado,Glauco; Araújo,Márcio S.; Facure,Kátia G.; Medeiros,Hermes F. de; Nunes,Renato.
It was sampled the litter frogs at altitudinal sites of a semideciduous mesophytic forest located at Sena do Japi (Jundiaí, São Paulo, 23º17'S, 47º00'W, 800-1300m altitude, 1500mm rain/year). Forty two plots of 8x8m were sampled in the dry/cold season of 1995: 21 at a Higher Site (HS) (1000m) and 21 at a Lower Site (LS) (850m). The plots were evenly located near, mid-distance, and far from the stream-bed. It was found a total of five species, three at each site. Eleutherodactylus guentheri comprised 83% of the individuals at HS and E. juipoca 67% at LS. The density of individuals was higher at HS and near the stream. The greater density at HS may be due to greater humidity there, provided by mist. The frogs may aggregate in wetter places (stream edges) in...

Notes on the lesser white-lined bat, Saccopteryx leptura (Schreber) (Chiroptera, Emballonuridae), from southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Nogueira,Marcelo R.; Peracchi,Adriano L.; Pol,André.
Saccopteryx leptura (Schreber, 1774) is reported from two new localities in southeastern Brazil, both in Atlantic forest remains in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Analysisof food material showed that individuals from both localities had preyedon insects in the order Hymenoptera. Cheek contents were available from one specimen, and in this case identification of the food item (flying ants) achieved generic level (Pheidole Westwood, 1841). Aspects in the social behavior observed in a colony suggest that the same traits documented in Central American populations (small colonies, monogamic mating system, and retention of young for up to a year in the parental unit) may also characterize this species in the southern most part of its range. In both external and...

Bats from Fazenda Intervales, Southeastern Brazil: species account and comparison between different sampling methods Zoologia
Portfors,Christine V.; Fenton,M. Brock; Aguiar,Ludmilla M. de S.; Baumgarten,Julio E.; Vonhof,Maarten J.; Bouchard,Sylvie; Faria,Deborah M. de; Pedro,Wagner A.; Rauntenbach,Naas I. L.; Zortea,Marlon.
Assessing the composition of an area's bat fauna is typically accomplished by using captures or by monitoring echolocation calls with bat detectors. The two methods may not provide the same data regarding species composition. Mist nets and harp traps may be biased towards sampling low flying species, and bat detectors biased towards detecting high intensity echolocators. A comparison of the bat fauna of Fazenda Intervales, southeastern Brazil, as revealed by mist nets and harp trap captures, checking roosts and by monitoring echolocation calls of flying bats illustrates this point. A total of 17 species of bats was sampled. Fourteen bat species were captured and the echolocation calls of 12 species were recorded, three of them not revealed by mist nets or...

Ecology of Mabuya agilis (Raddi) (Lacertilia, Scincidae) at the restinga of Grumari, Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Vrcibradic,Davor; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte.
Some aspects of the ecology of the skink Mabuya agilis (Raddi, 1823) at the restinga habitat of Grumari, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil are studied. Most of the lizards were first sighted on the ground, though a few were using perches (mainly cacti) up to 30 cm high. Mean body temperature in activity was 33.1 ± 2.4ºC and was significantly correlated to air temperature. There was sexual dimorphism in size (snout-vent length - SVL), with females growing larger than males. Frequency of broken tails was high overall (83%) and did not differ between sexes. Females and males are sexually mature at 49 mm and 47 mm SVL, respectively. Brood size averaged 3.2 ± 1.0 (range 1-5) and was positively and significantly related to female SVL (r = 0.65, p = 0.001). Relative...

The diet of bats from Southeastern Brazil: the relation to echolocation and foraging behaviour Zoologia
Fenton,M. Brock; Whitaker Jr,John O; Vonhof,Maarten J; Waterman,Jane M; Pedro,Wagner A; Aguiar,Ludmilla M.S; Baumgarten,Júlio E; Bouchard,Sylvie; Faria,Deborah M; Portfors,Christine V; Rautenbach,Naas I.L; Scully,William; Zortea,Marlon.
In this study the incidence of moths and beetles was examined from feces samples of bats that use different foraging behaviors. Twenty sites around the Fazenda Intervales, a Field Research Station located in São Paulo State, in southeastern Brazil were sampled. Feces were collected from bats caught in mist nets, Turtle Traps or hand nets and, in one case, from beneath a roost. Feces samples were taken from six species of bats: Micronycteris megalotis (Gray, 1842), Mimon bennettii (Gray, 1838), Furipterus horrens (F. Cuvier, 1828), Myotis riparius Handley, 1960, Myotis ruber (E. Geoffroy, 1806) and Histiotus velalus (I. Geoffroy, 1824). To record and describe the frequencies dominating bat echolocation calls, an Anabat II bat detector coupled with an Anabat...

Sedimentary changes on the Southeastern Brazilian upper slope during the last 35,000 years Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mahiques,Michel M.; Fukumoto,Marina M.; Silveira,Ilson C.A.; Figueira,Rubens C.L.; Bícego,Marcia C.; Lourenço,Rafael A.; Mello-e-Sousa,Silvia H..
A first evaluation of the sedimentary changes, including accumulation of inorganic and organic carbon on the upper slope off Southeastern Brazil under different climatic conditions, based on the analysis of a sedimentary core, is here presented. Results indicate that sedimentation rate as well sedimentary characteristics, including the nature of the organic carbon deposited during the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum), were different from the present deposition, indicating higher primary productivity during the LGM, to be accounted for by the higher values of marine organic carbon. Nevertheless, the higher values of Accumulation Rate of calcium carbonate and organic carbon can be credited to the higher values of the sedimentation rates. Conditions prevailing...

Structural control over well productivity in the Jundiaí River Catchment, Southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Neves,Mirna A.; Morales,Norberto.
The well productivity in crystalline terrains is extremely changeable and depends on external factors, in addition to the intrinsic properties of rocks. In the Jundiaí River Catchment, Southeastern Brazil, the main factor that influences well productivity is the existence of open discontinuities permeability in geologic environments that favor groundwater recharge. In that area, Pre-Cambrian shear and fault zones were reactivated throughout geologic time, controlling the morphostructural compartments and the Cenozoic sedimentary deposition. Superposition of productivity data and structural maps showed that more productive wells are concentrated mainly along the regional geologic structures. The structural control over well productivity is also noticeable...

Mercury bioaccumulation and isotopic relation between Trichiurus lepturus (Teleostei) and its preferred prey in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BITTAR,VANESSA T.; REZENDE,CARLOS E.; KEHRIG,HELENA A.; BENEDITTO,ANA PAULA M. DI.
The trophic transfer of total mercury (THg) and its bioaccumulation from prey species to the predator fish Trichiurus lepturus was analysed in coastal waters of southeastern Brazil to evaluate the trace element dynamic in this predator-prey system. The isotopic (δ13C and δ15N) relation between this predator and its prey allowed inferences on prey assimilation and predator feeding habits. The THg increment varied from 4.5 to 19.5 times between prey and predator, with a biomagnification power of 0.59. The prey species could be divided into three groups regarding δ15N values: i) 13.6 to 13.2‰ (juvenile conspecifics, Pellona harroweri, and Peprilus paru); ii) 12.5 to 11.8‰ (Chirocentrodon bleekerianus, Lycengraulis grossidens, and Dorytheuthis plei); and iii)...

Description of a second known Liotyphlops caissara specimen (Serpentes: Anomalepididae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
ABEGG,ARTHUR D.; AZEVEDO,WEVERTON S.; FRANCO,FRANCISCO L.; DUARTE,MARCELO R..
Abstract: We recorded a second specimen of the poorly known insular blind snake Liotyphlops caissara. This new specimen expands the morphological variation of the number of dorsal scales in the genus Liotyphlops to 296 (vs. 304 in L. wilderi) and, considering the fact that the holotype of this species was destroyed, the present specimen represents the only available L. caissara individual in zoological collections. Also, this new record constitutes the first out of type locality and expands the distribution of the species in about 40 km to the northeastern. According to IUCN criteria (B1a, b [iii]), we suggest that L. caissara be included in the “Endangered” category, since it occurs in only two insular locations and exhibits an occurrence extension of...

Movements of the bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the Rio de Janeiro State, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lodi,Liliane; Wedekin,Leonardo Liberali; Rossi-Santos,Marcos Roberto; Marcondes,Milton César.
Aiming to verify the movements of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) at Rio de Janeiro State coast, southeastern Brazil, we performed a photoidentification comparison between the catalogued individuals of the Cagarras Archipelago (23° 02' S and 43° 12' W) in 2004 and 2006 (n = 26) and the images obtained (n = 179) during the Southeastern Cetaceans Expedition, conducted during months of June and November of 2005. Eight individuals (three females and five dolphins of unknown gender) identified in the Cagarras Archipelago were resighted in the Grande Island (23° 21'S and 44° 15' W), about 100 km southwestwards from Cagarras Archipelago. Diet of Crenicichla britskii (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in a stream of Rio Aguapeí basin, Upper Rio Paraná system, southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gibran,Fernando Zaniolo; Ferreira,Katiane Mara; Castro,Ricardo M. C..
We qualitatively studied the gut contents of 20 specimens (36.1-71.3 mm standard length) of the pike cichlid Crenicichla britskii from a 100 m stretched second order stream running inside a small gallery forest in a large pasture area of Rio Aguapeí basin, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The diet, in terms of per cent composition, constituted primarily of aquatic insects (50%) (mostly immature forms), crustaceans (14.3%), unidentified organic material and filamentous green algae (both with 10.7%), followed by fishes and arachnids (both with 7.1%). Diet analysis indicates that C. britskii is a generalist insectivore with a relatively short digestive tube, which feeds on autochthonous items captured in a broad array of habitats such as in the water...

Little is known about the ichthyofauna from South American coastal plain, specially concerning the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest) rivers and streams, as there are regions little explored which may have non-described or rare species. An example is the Parque das Neblinas, a Natural Patrimony Private Reserve (RPPN) in the Bertioga municipality, São Paulo state, where no ichthyofaunal study had been done before. The park's hydrography is made up by the rio Itatinga with its various tributary streams, which flow into the Itapanhaú river basin. Nine sites were sampled using sieves, seines and gill nets; 1,086 specimens of seven species, three orders and five families were captured.
