Stability of spatial structures of demersal assemblages: a multitable approach ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Chessel, Daniel; Bertrand, Jacques.
The present work is based on a set of bottom trawl surveys performed in the Gulf of Lions between 1983 and 1992. A new method which couples the STATIS multitable approach with the logic of correspondence analysis (CoA) is proposed to study the stability of spatial organization of demersal assemblages in terms of species composition. This CoA version of STATIS has provided a clear representation of the stable part of the spatial structure of the assemblages. In addition, it gave an insight into the interannual variations of the distribution of each population around the reference structure. Our results showed that the demersal assemblages of the Gulf of Lions exhibited strong spatial structuring, mainly orientated along a bathymetric gradient. This gradient...

Trawling pressure and environmental changes may affect the composition of fish assemblages. Our knowledge on large spatio-temporal patterns of demersal fish composition remains incomplete for the Mediterranean Sea. We investigated (1) the spatio-temporal stability of demersal assemblages, (2) the relationships between these assemblages and potential structuring factors (trawling pressure and environmental conditions) in order to assess the dynamic of the assemblage structure at the scale of the northern Mediterranean Sea. We analysed a dataset of 18062 hauls from 10 to 800 m depth performed annually during the last two decades across 17 Geographical Sub-Areas (GSAs) (MEDITS program). A multi-table analysis (STATICO-CoA) evidenced a strong inter-GSAs...

Diversity and stability of an estuarine trophic network ArchiMer
Lobry, Jeremy; David, V; Pasquaud, S; Lepage, M; Sautour, B; Rochard, E.
Estuarine areas provide highly valuable ecosystem benefits for human populations, despite being under intense demographic, economic and ecological pressures. Hence, an understanding of the structure and function of estuarine ecosystems is essential for understanding the persistence and stability of these ecosystems and their response to perturbations. This study synthesises available data and knowledge about the Gironde estuary (SW France) in a mass-balanced trophic model to illustrate potential key patterns in the functioning of the estuarine ecosystem and key elements of its stability. In order to evaluate the total direct and indirect impact on the whole community of the 2 main sources of anthropogenic perturbations in the estuarine area, mortalities...

Individuals exhibit consistent differences in their metabolic rates across changing thermal conditions ArchiMer
Auer, Sonya K.; Salin, Karine; Anderson, Graeme J.; Metcalfe, Neil B..
Metabolic rate has been linked to growth, reproduction, and survival at the individual level and is thought to have far reaching consequences for the ecology and evolution of organisms. However, differences in metabolic rate among individuals must be consistent (i.e. repeatable) over at least some portion of their lifetime in order to predict their longer-term effects on population dynamics and how they will respond to selection. Previous studies demonstrate that metabolic rates are repeatable under constant conditions but potentially less so in more variable environments. We measured the standard (= minimum) metabolic rate, maximum metabolic rate, and aerobic scope (= interval between standard and maximum rates) in juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta)...

Influence of stability and fragmentation of a worm-reef on benthic macrofauna ArchiMer
Godet, Laurent; Fournier, Jerome; Jaffre, Mikael; Desroy, Nicolas.
In coastal areas, reef-builder worms often are bio-engineers by structuring their physical and biological environment. Many studies showed that this engineering role is determined by the densities of the engineer species itself, the highest densities approximately corresponding to the most stable areas from a sedimentological point of view, and hosting the richest and the most diverse benthic fauna. Here, we tested the potential influence of the spatio-temporal dynamics and the spatial fragmentation of one of the largest European intertidal reefs generated by the marine worm Lanice conchilega (Pallas, 1766) (Annelida, Polychaeta) on the associated benthic macrofauna. We demonstrated that the worm densities do have a significant positive role on the...

Spatio-temporal organization patterns of demersal assemblages of the east coast of Corsica (Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Gaertner, Jean-claude; Bertrand, Jacques; Samani, D; Souplet, Arnauld.
The paper deals with the spatio-temporal organization patterns demersal assemblages along the east coast of Corsica. We analysed data collected by the first standardized experimental bottom trawl surveys performed in this region from 1994 to 1999 (MEDITS programme). The use of a multiway table method (STATIS-CoA) showed that the spatial organization pattern of the demersal assemblages of eastern Corsica was highly stable during the period studied. This pattern was structured around three bathymetric areas (i) the continental shelf (between 50 to 200 m depth), (ii) the upper slope (from 200 to 500 m) and (iii) the deeper slope (from 500 to 800 m), but it did not show any heterogeneity in relation with latitude. Along the cast coast of Corsica-characterized...

What is the optimum concentration of m-cresol in antivenoms? J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Abd-Elsalam,MA; Abdoon,N; Al-Ahaidib,MS.
Antivenoms against snake and scorpion envenomations are usually equine in nature and composed mostly of F(ab')2; additionally, phenol and m-cresol are mainly employed for their preservation. Although there is no study on this subject, m-cresol is utilized by most manufacturers in a concentration that ranges from 0.15 to 0.35 g%. Decreasing the concentration of m-cresol to its minimal effective level may protect victims from its toxic effects and keep the antivenom stable during its shelf life without forming any aggregates. In the present work, different concentrations of m-cresol, ranging from 0.1 to 0.35 g%, were used with some selected batches of snake and scorpion antivenoms. A low concentration of 0.15 g% showed an acceptable preserving result that...

ABSTRACT In the Southeast of Mexico, there are many native cichlids with commercial interest such as redhead cichlid (Vieja melanurus) and twoband cichlid (V. bifasciata), which have a great local demand and excellent meat quality. However, it is necessary to implement their culture based on nutrition studies and digestive biochemistry. This study’s objective was to characterize these two cichlids’ digestive proteases (pH, temperature, and inhibitors) through biochemistry techniques. Results showed that V. melanurus and V. bifasciata have a digestive capacity analogous to other omnivore fishes, where the optimal pH values of stomach proteases (4 and 2, respectively) and intestinal proteases (6 and 12, respectively), the optimal temperature of acid (35°C...

Genotype by environment interaction for seed yield per plant in rapeseed using AMMI model PAB
Marjanović-Jeromela,Ana; Nagl,Nevena; Gvozdanović-Varga,Jelica; Hristov,Nikola; Kondić-Špika,Ankica; Marinković,Mirjana Vasićand Radovan.
The objective of this study was to assess genotype by environment interaction for seed yield per plant in rapeseed cultivars grown in Northern Serbia by the AMMI (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) model. The study comprised 19 rapeseed genotypes, analyzed in seven years through field trials arranged in a randomized complete block design, with three replicates. Seed yield per plant of the tested cultivars varied from 1.82 to 19.47 g throughout the seven seasons, with an average of 7.41 g. In the variance analysis, 72.49% of the total yield variation was explained by environment, 7.71% by differences between genotypes, and 19.09% by genotype by environment interaction. On the biplot, cultivars with high yield genetic potential had...

Multivariate analyses of genotype x environment interaction of popcorn PAB
Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira; Namorato,Heraldo; Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues; Soares,Marcelo Oliveira.
The objectives of this work were to evaluate the genotype x environment (GxE) interaction for popcorn and to compare two multivariate analyses methods. Nine popcorn cultivars were sown on four dates one month apart during each of the agricultural years 1998/1999 and 1999/2000. The experiments were carried out using randomized block designs, with four replicates. The cv. Zélia contributed the least to the GxE interaction. The cv. Viçosa performed similarly to cv. Rosa-claro. Optimization of GxE was obtained for cv. CMS 42 for a favorable mega-environment, and for cv. CMS 43 for an unfavorable environment. Multivariate analysis supported the results from the method of Eberhart & Russell. The graphic analysis of the Additive Main effects and...

Statistical models for evaluating the genotype-environment interaction in maize (Zea mays L.) Phyton
Kandus,M; Almorza,D; Boggio Ronceros,R; Salerno,JC.
Our objective was to determine the genotype-environment interaction (GxE) in a hybrid integrated by maize lines either carrying or not balanced lethal systems. Experiments were conducted in three locations over a period of two years considering each year-location combination as a different environment. Yield data were analysed using the Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model and the Sites Regression Analysis (SREG). Results were represented by biplots. The AMMI analysis was the best model for determining the interaction.

Multiple Membership and Federal Sructures AgEcon
Le Breton, Michel; Makarov, Valery; Savvateev, Alexei; Weber, Shlomo.
We consider a model of the “world" with several regions that may create a unified entity or be partitioned into several unions (countries). The regions have distinct preferences over policies chosen in the country to which they belong and equally share the cost of public policies. It is known that stable \political maps" or country partitions, that do not admit a threat of secession by any group of regions, may fail to exist. To rectify this problem, in line with the recent trend for an increased autonomy and various regional arrangements, we consider federal structures, where a region can simultaneously be a part of several unions. We show that, under very general conditions, there always exists a stable federal structure.

A MEZŐGAZDASÁGI JÖVEDELMEK STABILITÁSA AgEcon
Lamfalusi, Ibolya.

Status-Seeking in Hedonic Games with Heterogeneous Players AgEcon
Lazarova, Emiliya A.; Dimitrov, Dinko.
We study hedonic games with heterogeneous player types that reflect her nationality, ethnic background, or skill type. Agents' preferences are dictated by status-seeking where status can be either local or global. The two dimensions of status define the two components of a generalized constant elasticity of substitution utility function. In this setting, we characterize the core as a function of the utility's parameter values and show that in all cases the corresponding cores are non-empty. We further discuss the core stable outcomes in terms of their segregating versus integrating properties.

Constrained School Choice: An Experimental Study AgEcon
Calsamiglia, Caterina; Haeringer, Guillaume; Klijn, Flip.
The literature on school choice assumes that families can submit a preference list over all the schools they want to be assigned to. However, in many real-life instances families are only allowed to submit a list containing a limited number of schools. Subjects' incentives are drastically affected, as more individuals manipulate their preferentes. Including a safety school in the constrained list explains most manipulations. Competitiveness across schools plays an important role. Constraining choices increases segregation and affects the stability and efficiency of the final allocation. Remarkably, the constraint reduces significantly the proportion of subjects playing a dominated strategy.

Connections Among Farsighted Agents AgEcon
Grandjean, Gilles; Mauleon, Ana; Vannetelbosch, Vincent.
We study the stability of social and economic networks when players are farsighted. In particular, we examine whether the networks formed by farsighted players are different from those formed by myopic players. We adopt Herings, Mauleon and Vannetelbosch’s (Games and Economic Behavior, forthcoming) notion of pairwise farsightedly stable set. We first investigate in some classical models of social and economic networks whether the pairwise farsightedly stable sets of networks coincide with the set of pairwise (myopically) stable networks and the set of strongly efficient networks. We then provide some primitive conditions on value functions and allocation rules so that the set of strongly efficient networks is the unique pairwise farsightedly stable set....

Many-to-One Matching when Colleagues Matter AgEcon
Revilla, Pablo.
This paper studies many-to-one matching market in which each agent’s preferences not only depend on the institution that hires her, but also on the group of her colleagues, which are matched to the same institution. With an unrestricted domain of preferences the non-emptiness of the core is not guaranteed. Under certain conditions on agents’ preferences, we show that two possible situations in which, at least, one stable allocation exists, emerge. The first condition, called Group Togetherness, reflects real-life situations in which agents are more concerned about an acceptable set of colleagues than about the firm hiring them. The second one, Common Best Colleague, refers to markets in which a workers’ ranking is accepted by workers and firms present...

The Stability of Exchange Networks AgEcon
Dooan, Gonul; van Assen, M.A.L.M.; van de Rijt, Arnout; Buskens, Vincent.
This paper develops a formal model of exchange network stability that combines expected value theory (Friedkin 1995) with the economic literature on network dynamics. We identify stable networks up to size 8 for varying costs and investigate whether they are Pareto efficient and egalitarian. Only a very small number of networks are stable. Odd cycles and networks consisting of dyads and at most one isolate are the only egalitarian, efficient, and stable networks for a large cost range. We show that some of these results are generalizable to networks of any size and are independent of using expected value theory.

Under-connected and Over-connected Networks AgEcon
Buechel, Berno; Hellmann, Tim.
Since the seminal contribution of Jackson & Wolinsky 1996 [A Strategic Model of Social and Economic Networks, JET 71, 44-74] it has been widely acknowledged that the formation of social networks exhibits a general conflict between individual strategic behavior and collective outcome. What has not been studied systematically are the sources of inefficiency. We approach this omission by analyzing the role of positive and negative externalities of link formation. This yields general results that relate situations of positive externalities with stable networks that cannot be “too dense” in a well-defined sense, while situations with negative externalities tend to induce “too dense” networks.
