Pitaya (Stenocereus stellatus) fruit growth is associated to wet season in Mexican dry tropic Phyton
García-Suárez,F; Carreto-Montoya,L; Cárdenas-Navarro,R; Díaz-Pérez,JC; López-Gómez,R.
In this work we contribute to the knowledge of the reproductive phenology of Stenocereus stellatus (Pfeiffer,Riccobono), a columnar cactus that produces fruits of high commercial perspectives known as "pitayas". This kind of pitayas are produced for local commercialization in back orchards in some regions of the Mexican dry tropics. These fruits are produced only in the apical part of the cactus "arms". Our results show that fruit development of pitayas is highly associated to the rainy season of the year. This behavior is different from the reproductive strategy of other columnar cactus species that produce other kinds of pitaya in the same ecological region.

Water stress and forage production in Tetrachne dregei Nees, Panicum coloratum L. and Eragrostis curvula (Schrad) Nees Phyton
Ruiz,MA; Golberg,AD; Martínez,O.
Tetrachne dregei, Panicum coloratum and Eragrostis curvula are perennial forage C4 grasses, introduced from South Africa to the pampean semiarid region. This work was carried out to compare water stress tolerance; forage production and quality of T. dregei, P. coloratum and E. curvula. Studies were conducted under greenhouse and field conditions. In the greenhouse, watering was stopped after eighty one days of plant emergency in the water stress treatment. Water potential (ψ), stomatal resistance (SR) and shoot and root weights were evaluated. Under water stress, ψ diminished earlier and SR increases were higher in P. coloratum than in T. dregei and E. curvula. Plant survival in T. dregei and E. curvula was higher than that of P....

Seedling growth response of Seriphidium quettense to water stress and non-water stress conditions Phyton
Ahmad,S; Gul,S; Achakzai,AKK; Islam,M.
Seedling growth and development of Seriphidium quettense were examined under water stress (WS) and non-water stress (NWS) conditions. Seedlings were grown in pots to investigate their response to NWS conditions. Impact of WS on seedling growth was assessed in pre-existing plants grown under a semi-arid, natural environment. Seedling growth attributes were recorded on a monthly basis. Seedling growth exhibited a significant positive response under NWS conditions. Length of the main root axis at the first leaf emergence stage was 5.69 cm under NWS conditions; however, it was 4.8 cm in the natural environment (WS). At the end of the growing season, length of their primary root was 118 cm in NWS conditions. At the same time, it reached 8.8 cm in the WS natural...

Osmotic adjustment in Leymus cinereus cv. "Trailhead" under field conditions Phyton
Torres,YA; Busso,CA; Montenegro,OA; Giorgetti,HD; Rodríguez,HD; Bentivegna,D.
Osmotic adjustment has been recognized to be an important adaptive response to water stress in higher plants. Although Leymus cinereus cv. "Trailhead" is reputedly a very drought-tolerant rangeland plant, its ability to adjust osmotically in the field has not previously been reported. This study examined the occurrence or not of osmotic adjustment in field-grown plants of Leymus cinereus cv. "Trailhead" during late spring in an arid zone of Patagonia. Plants of this species had been established in the field three years before. With this purpose, leaf laminae of this species were collected and pressure-volume curves made. Results showed turgor maintenance in the face of declining leaf water potentials (i.e., osmotic adjustment) in the study species. Even...

Influence of environmental factors on seed germination and seedling emergence of yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis) Planta Daninha
Ghaderi-Far,F; Gherekhloo,J.; Alimagham,M..
Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of drought and salinity stress, temperature, pH and planting depth on yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis) germination and emergence. Base, optimum and ceiling germination temperatures were estimated as 0, 18.47 and 34.60 ºC, respectively. Seed germination was sensitive to drought stress and completely inhibited at a potential of -1 MPa, but it was tolerant to salinity. Salinity stress up to 90 mM had no effect over the M. officinalis seed germination, but the germination decreased by increasing the salt concentration. The drought and salinity required for 50% inhibition of maximum germination were 207 mM and -0.49 MPa, respectively. High percentage of seed germination...

Bras. Bot.
CHAVES FILHO,JALES TEIXEIRA; STACCIARINI-SERAPHIN,ELIANE.

Soil water balance simulated by CROPGRO-Drybean model for edaphoclimatic conditions in Maringá AGRIAMBI
Dallacort,Rivanildo; Freitas,Paulo S. L. de; Faria,Rogério T. de; Gonçalves,Antonio C. A.; Jácome,Aleksandra G.; Rezende,Roberto.
The performance of the CROPGRO-Drybeans model for the prediction of soil water balance, as well as growth components and bean crop yield, was assessed using data from two field experiments conducted at the State University of Maringá Irrigation Technical Center, Paraná - Brazil, (latitude 23º27'S, longitude 51º57' and altitude 542 m), during the 2005 and 2006 growing season. The model simulations correlated well with measured soil moisture (r > 0.7) for both experiments. However, there were high discrepancies between measured and simulated soil moisture values on the days after rainfall. In addition, it was found that the model exaggerates the effect of water stress during the flowering phase, which leds to underprediction (19 and 29%) of crop yield.
