BioBiogas - Erfahrungen bei der Erzeugung von Biogas im Ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Grieb, Beatrice; Gerlach, Florian.

Nitrate leaching in grazed grasslands of different composition and age Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Vinther, F.P..
In a field experiment at Research Centre Foulum a suction cup technique was used to investigate nitrate leaching from grassland depending on composition (grass-clover or perennial ryegrass), management (grazing or cutting) and age of the swards. In 1997-2001 was investigated the successive nitrate leaching from 4-7 year old grazed grass-clover and ryegrass with cut plots of similar age and spring barley as reference. In 2000-2001 the simultaneous nitrate leaching from newly established swards, swards grazed for 1 and 7 years and swards cut for 7 years was investigated. In the newly established swards nitrate leaching from grass-clover and ryegrass were similar but at increasing sward age nitrate leaching from the fertilized ryegrass increased dramatically...

Auswirkungen der Umstellung auf den Ökologischen Landbau auf Laufkäfer und epigäische Spinnen in Norddeutschland Organic Eprints
Olthoff, Thomas; Voigt, Norbert; Piper, Werner; Brock, Vilmut; Rahmann, Gerold.

Towards sustainable food systems through civic food education in schools and in public catering services Organic Eprints
Risku-Norja, Helmi; Mikkola, Minna.
The publication examines possibilities to integrate the statutory school food provided by the municipals in to the educational goals of schools are discussed. The sustainability concept as perceived and implemented by the actors of the municipal catering sector and by the teachers of basic education in Finland are captured via questionnaires directed to each of the groups. The information retrieved from the questionnaires is complemented with analysis of school curricula. Participatory action research involving teachers, caterers and researchers are suggested to provide one promising channel for finding the local way to implement food education for sustainability. This would convey the empowerment of both groups of professionals in their efforts for...

Studies on greenhouse gas emissions in organic and conventional dairy farms Organic Eprints
Kassow, Antje; Rahmann, Gerold; Blank, Britta; Paulsen, Hans Marten; Aulrich, Karen.
In Germany agriculture is responsible for 14 % of the whole greenhouse gas (GHG) emis-sions. A considerable portion (30 %) of the emissions is caused by dairy farming. Recent discussions about this issue show that there is a lack of solid data. The project "Climate effects and sustainability of organic and conventional farming systems - examination in a network of pilot farms" aims to attain more precise information. A total of 40 conventional and 40 organic farms in Germany are compared in this project. Half of the farm pairs are dairy systems; they are located as organic/conventional pairs in regions with equal soil and climatic conditions. The collected data includes length of life, first calving, milk yield, fodder regime, state of health of the...

Incentive Mechanisms for Researchers to Participate in Targeted Interactive Research and Innovation Processes–Beyond Academic Relevance Organic Eprints
Home, Robert; Moschitz, Heidrun.
The objectives of this study are twofold. Firstly the objective is to identify possible incentives and evaluation criteria for research organisations and individual researchers that are or can be used in addition to scientific excellence. A further objective is to identify means of strengthening incentives for individual researchers to take part in multi actor research and innovation process-es. In this study, we have developed ten recommendations on the basis of literature analysis and theoretical reflection. They include six potential changes at the level of research policy (P1-P6), and four recommendations at the level of research institutions (I7-I10). For each recommendation we give the following details: a) a short description of the recom-mendation...

Ökologische Aquakultur - Im Spannungsfeld zwischen Praxisrealität, Richtlinien und Verbrauchererwartung Organic Eprints
Stamer, Andreas.

Sustainable Farming of Bioenergy Crops Organic Eprints
Müller, Adrian.
Bioenergy is one option to mitigate climate change in the energy sector. Sustainable bioenergy however faces several challenges. First, there is a widely discussed land competition between food and bioenergy crops. Second, there is a widely neglected competition for biomass between using it as a fertilizer for sustainable agriculture or as feedstock for bioenergy production. Sustainability standards for bioenergy capture several environmental, social and economic aspects and often also land competition, but neglect the agronomic aspects related to the fertilizer use of biomass. Accounting for this, however, the sustainable bioenergy potential seems rather low and may only be realized in biogas production. Such can make much sense, but expectation in...

Proposals for Regulation of Semiochemicals Organic Eprints
Speiser, Bernhard; Tamm, Lucius; Mattock, Susan.
Semiochemicals are substances that evoke behavioural or physiological responses. Pheromones modify the behaviour of other individuals of the same species, while allelochemicals act on individuals of different species. Pheromones are used in plant protection (i) to interfere with the mating behaviour of pests ('mating disruption'), (ii) to attract pests to insecticidal traps or baits ('attract and kill'), (iii) to trap pests ('mass trapping'), and (iv) to monitor pest populations. Semiochemicals present a particular case among active ingredients used in plant production products, as they are only substances not intended to kill the pest organism directly. The current regulatory system of pesticides is often seen as a major hurdle for the market introduction...

Gattinger, Andreas; Hörtenhuber, Stefan; Klocke, Peter; Lindenthal, Thomas; Schader, Christian.

Lakner, Sebastian; Wilken, Marlene.

Jan.) in Frick Organic Eprints
Weibel, Franco.

The importance of support to coordination of the European organic research Organic Eprints
Halberg, Niels.
Europe has been among the global leaders in research and innovation in high-quality food from organic agriculture serving the dual purpose of responding to consumers’ demand in high-value markets and respond-ing to national and EU agri-environmental and rural development poli-cies. There has been — and still is — a great need for research and innovation in organic food and farming because of its relatively recent development and because it is an alternative, which is very knowledge-intensive: a knowledge that cannot always be covered by results from mainstream agricultural research. In order to follow the principles of organic agriculture as laid out in, for example, Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 (1) (e.g. ‘the appropriate design and management of...
