| This study estimates the expected benefits from adoption of new water-related technologies for the Texas High Plains, a region which is currently mining groundwater. Adoption rates for two improved irrigation systems and limited tillage practices are assumed, and changes in net returns, resource usage, and irrigated acres are examined as measures of adoption benefits. A recursive linear programming framework covering a 40-year period is employed, with results indicating that, contrary to what one might hope, adoption will not significantly lengthen the life of the aquifer. | This study employed a Tobit model to examine factors that influence the adoption and intensity of utilisation of improved maize varieties in the West Shoa Zone in the central highlands of Ethiopia. The estimated results indicate that level of education, household labour, farm size, extension services, farm income, and timely availability of improved maize seeds significantly influence the adoption and intensity of use of improved maize. It also showed that the impact of off-farm income and age of the household head on adoption and intensity of use of improved maize seed was insignificant. |

| The concept of multifunctionality, in which agriculture is viewed as a source of both commodity and non-commodity outputs, has stimulated debate on the desirability of further trade liberalization. We explore the economics of multifunctionality and its policy implications. We argue for a new policy approach in which land and natural resource managers are remunerated for positive non-commodity outputs and penalized for negative outputs. This would require devolution in policy implementation from the centre to the local level. Such an approach would permit countries to achieve broader social objectives, while at the same time continuing to pursue trade liberalization. |

| Future food security can be achieved only by delivering substantial increases in agricultural production, but this has important implications for water availability. Water scarcity is not currently a major issue in sub-Saharan Africa, but it would be a mistake to neglect this issue. It would be a mistake also to assume that only plans for irrigated agriculture are affected. It should be recognised that a land-use decision is also a water-use decision. | Introductions of nonindigenous organisms into the United States have been linked to international trade. The individual contributions of imports, immigration, and international travel, however, are poorly understood because introduction dates are unavailable. We examine relationships between economic trends and discoveries of nonindegenous insects and use these relationships to infer the timing and determinants of introductions. We find that a few variables can explain much variation in species introductions and identifications. The most significant contributor to the introduction appears to be agricultural imports. Currently available proxies for academic effort are weak determinants of the probability that introduced species are identified. |

| Elephant foot yam is traditionally cultivated on commercial scales in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and West Bengal. The statistics on area, production and yield of this crop are not available in the literature and this paper has estimated the cost of cultivation, farm income measures and resource-use efficiency of the crop in these states, except West Bengal.
