Optimal performance from center pivot sprinkler systems NWISRL
King, Bradley A.; Kincaid, Dennis C..
A good supply of groundwater and the commercial development of center pivot irrigation systems significantly increased sprinkler-irrigated acreage in southern Idaho during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today, center pivot systems, with their automation, large areal coverage, reliability, high application uniformity, and ability to operate on relatively rough topography, are replacing surface; handline, and wheelline systems. The irrigated area under a center pivot system expands substantially with increasing system length. To accommodate the increased area, the application rate increases linearly along the center pivot lateral through one of two methods: increased flow rates through equally spaced Sprinklers or gradually decreased spacing of...

Hydraulic Conductivity and Moisture Retention Characteristics of Southern Idaho's Silt Loam Soils NWISRL

Regression modeling weather and biolsolids effects on dryland wheat yields in Eastern Colorado, 2001-2012 NWISRL
Barbarack, K.A.; Ippolito, J.A.; McDaniel, J.P.; Hansen., N.C.; Peterson, G.A..
In the western Great Plains, climate dictates dryland wheat (Triticum aestivum, L) productivity. Producers use inorganic N fertilizers to improve crop yields in this region, while municipalities recycle sewage biosolids in the area. Will biosolids (from the Littleton/Englewood, CO Wastewater Treatment Plant) applications to western Great Plains dryland agroecosystems interact with weather to affect wheat production? To this end, we regressed crop yields on weather variables from 2000 through 2011 at a site about 40 km (approximately 25 miles) east of Byers, CO (Byers). We used SAS (Proc Reg) to develop several multiple regression models to predict crop yields. Our model of choice included four weather parameters for Byers wheat production. Regression...

The Effect of Aldicarb on Sugarbeet Insects and Yield NWISRL
Blickenstaff, C.C..
Approximately 450 species of insects were collected in sugarbeet fields in south-central Idaho over the 4-year period 1974 to 1977. Fifty-four species or species groups were taken from 50 percent or more of the fields sampled; 18 were classed as destructive or potentially destructive, 14 as beneficial, and 22 of unknown function. Of the 54, 18 were collected more commonly by sweep net, 34 were collected more commonly by pitfall traps, and 2 were collected equally by the two methods. Fourteen of the 54 were taken exclusively by pitfall traps. The apparent effect of aldicarb on insect populations varied widely with an overall reduction of about 20 percent. The effect of aldicarb treatment an the sugarbeet root maggot, curly top disease, lygus, and...

Salt- and sodium-affected soils NWISRL
Robbins, Charles W.; Gavlak, R.G..
This publication is designed to help identify salt- and sodium-affected soils, the salt or sodium sources, how to take soil and water samples, how to reduce the harmful effects of salts and sodium and where to get advice in making reclamation and management decisions for each situation. Salt- and sodium-affected soils, and waters used for irrigation, present a complex combination of problems and possible solutions. It is not the intent here to cover all technical aspects or possible treatment approaches available, but rather to give a simplified overview of what should be considered in diagnosing and managing salt- and sodium-affected soils and irrigation waters. Since summarizing the effects of salt and sodium on soils and plants is...

Principles and practices of irrigating agricultural land with food processing waste effluent: a review NWISRL
Smith, Jay H..
Wastewater irrigation of agricultural land for treatment and disposal can be an effective management system that should be, where feasible, a consideration for wastewater treatment. Irrigating agricultural land with food processing, municipal, and some industrial effluents has been successful for many years in the USA, the Netherlands, and elsewhere where the systems were conservatively designed and the water and nutrient applications were not excessive (Smith, and others, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1983; and DeHaan, et al. 1973,). Some advantages associated with wastewater irrigation systems may relate to lower initial costs of development than the conventional secondary wastewater treatment but the cost advantage does not always remain with...

Management practices and sugar end potatoes NWISRL
Westermann, Dale T..
French fries processed from sugar end potatoes become undesirably dark on one end while remaining light on the other (fig. 1). The darkening is usually caused by a higher concentration of reducing sugars in the darkened end of the fry strip. Sugar ends are associated with tubers that are pointed on the stem end but also occur in ideally shaped tubers. "Translucent end," "jelly end," and "sugar end" describe the same physiological tuber problem. Translucent end tubers with high levels of sugars develop jelly end rot after progressive tissue breakdown occurs. The Russet Burbank variety is particularly susceptible to sugar end formation when subjected to water and heat stress.

Sulfate Foot Baths on Dairies and Crop Toxicities NWISRL
Moore, A.; Ippolito, J.A..
A rising concern with the application of dairy wastes to agricultural fields is the accumulation of copper (Cu) in the soil. Copper sulfate (CuSO4) from cattle footbaths is washed out of dairy barns and into wastewater lagoons. The addition of CuSO4 baths can increase Cu concentration significantly in manure slurry, from approximately 5.0 grams per 1,000 liters to 90.0 grams per 1,000 liters. The Cu-enriched dairy waste is then applied to agricultural crops, thus raising concerns about how soils and plants are impacted by these Cu additions.

Treatment and Disposal of Sugarbeet Processing Waste Water by Irrigation NWISRL
Smith, J.H.; Hayden, C.W..
Irrigation with sugarbeet processing waste water was studied at three locations for 2 or 3 years where perennial grass and alfalfa were irrigated by flooding specially graded fields. Experimental sites were scheduled for irrigation at intervals of 1, 2, or 4 weeks. This schedule was maintained for the first year until the weekly irrigated plots were discontinued because of excessive loading. Waste water was sampled twice weekly from the sugar factories, and water samples were extracted from the soil at depths of from 15 to 150 cm each time the fields were irrigated. All water samples were analyzed for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, electrical conductivity, calcium, magnesium, sodium, sodium absorption ratio,...

Cast-in-Place 2-Foot Concrete Trapezoidal Flow-Measuring Flumes NWISRL
Humpherys, A.S.; Bondurant, J.A..
Procedures are presented for casting 50-ft^2/sec trapezoidal water measurement flumes in 2-foot bottom width lined and unlined ditches. Drawings and construction details for the concrete forms used are also presented. Flumes installed in concrete-lined ditches require about 13 man-hours and cost about $230. Flow can be determined for both free and submerged flow conditions from rating tables with depth measured in a sitting well or with a sloping gage on the flue sidewall.

Use of Amendments to Reduce Water Requirements for Stand Establishment of Small-Seeded Crops NWISRL
Dennis, R.E.; Edmond, C.W.; Robbins, C.W..
Soil crusting after planting is a serious problem in stand establishment of small-seeded crops in the Southwest. When crusting occurs in a saline, warm soil, stand establishment problems are especially severe. It is customary to use costly irrigation water to keep seedbed surfaces moist after planting to reduce soil crusting and to lower soil temperatures. Phosphoric acid (24% and 12%) and sulfuric acid (95%) were evaluated to determine their effectiveness in reducing soil crusting and reducing the amount of water required to obtain stands of sugarbeets, alfalfa, wheat and barley. Phosphoric acid, applied in 4-6 cm bands over the seed row at planting and before irrigation, reduced crusting and increased sugarbeet and alfalfa seedling emergence....
