A pot experiments was conducted to study the possible role of melatonin (50 µM or 100 µM) alone or in combination with Basagran herbicide at recommended dose or ½ recommended dose in reducing the deleterious effect of weed associated with Vicia faba plants. Results show that all applied treatments significantly reduced the weed dry weight at 45 DAS and at harvest accompanied by significant increase in growth parameters of bean plants (at 45 DAS), all components of photosynthetic pigments, seed yield/plant and its components relative to unweeded treatment. It is obvious that herbicide at recommended dose was more effective than herbicide at ½ recommended dose. Similarly, melatonin at 50 µM was more effective than melatonin at 100 µM. It is worthy... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of carnauba-based wax to preserve the quality of bean grains. Three lots of beans of 25 kg each were used. The first remained without carnauba wax (treatment 0), the second with carnauba wax diluted with water in a 1:1 proportion (treatment 1), and carnauba wax without dilution (treatment 2). Sensory analysis, color, cooking time, absorption capacity, and insect-plague infestation were performed during 8 months of storage. Carnauba wax does not compromise the sensorial quality and color of the beans. Thus, it can be used without interfering with the products acceptance by the consumer. Carnauba wax did not prevent the hard-to-cook damage, which the consumer associates with a longer period of cooking time.... |

Abstract In Bangladesh for spraying purposes there are two types of sprayers are used, one is hand-operated other is a fuel-operated sprayer. A worker can’t use the hand-operated sprayer nonstop for more than 5-6 hours and needs fuel for fuel operated sprayer which is costly, an environmental pollutant and in rural places availability of fuel is not easy. An investigation was made to fabricate a solar pesticide sprayer, evaluate the performance of the sprayer and compare it with the hand-operated sprayer. to the hand-operated sprayer and cost analysis of the sprayer. The solar-operated pesticide sprayer consists of a 12-volt 20-watt capacity solar panel, a 12-volt DC battery, a DC motor, a pump and a 16 liters tank to hold the pesticide. The... |

Postharvest cooling techniques applied for fresh fruits and vegetables (FFVs) have received considerable research efforts in the recent years. The research efforts have been geared towards reducing respiration rate, weight loss, and water loss during cooling whilst reducing field heat and microbial activity in fresh fruits and vegetables. Some recent advances including the application of disinfectants such as chlorine dioxide (ClO2), 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) in hydrocooling, modification of air flow pattern and vent design during forced air cooling, and integration of vacuum cooling (VC) with modified atmosphere (MA) system have been applied as effective methods in reducing respiration rate and weight loss, producing... |

Spraying on tree crops must consider the canopy's structural features to maximize its effectiveness. The main drawbacks to VRI technology include the complexity of successfully implementing it and the lack of evidence that it assures better performance in net profit or water savings. Hence, a novel framework based on canopy characterization was presented in this research for an automatic variable-rate spraying system. The first phase was collecting the data, and the next was cleaning it to eliminate redundant information. The pre-treated data are then entered into the Crest- Stride-wise Regression Framework we devised, where we extract the canopy features and evaluate additional parameters. In addition, our proposed model automatically predicts the... |

The pre-cooling process (The removal of field heat) is considered one of the most important post-harvest processes that directly affect the quality and production. Pre-cooling reduces microbial activity, respiration rates, and vital heat. This process reduces water loss and decomposition, thus, it helps to maintain quality and extend the shelf life of the fruits. This study aimed to provide the optimal design of a solar precooling system for small-scale producers. The working principle of the designed pre-cooling system was based on a solar energy system integrated with water cooling combined with indirect evaporative cooling. The total required time to reduce the water temperature from 25 to 15, 10, and 5 °C was 1.88, 2.63, and 3.4 hr,... |
