Competition Regimes in Telecommunications and the International Trading System AgEcon
Koopmann, Georg.
In most countries, competition in the telecommunications industry is subject to both sector-specific regulation and more general antitrust policies. At the same time, a process of international market liberalisation is under way in telecommunications which can only be truly effective - and further advance - if appropriate competitive safeguards are in place. Trading partners should agree on certain minimum standards to be observed in this area in order to better combat anticompetitive conduct and avoid international conflicts. The Reference Paper to the WTO Agreement on Basic Telecommunications is an important step in this direction and may also serve as a model for other network industries. It is a framework of rules which has to be filled with concrete...

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION AND THE OPTIMAL LOCATION OF THE FIRM UNDER UNCERTAINTY AgEcon
Isik, Murat.
This paper examines the optimal location of a competitive firm in response to environmental costs imposed by the abatement investment and taxes when the cost of the environmental regulation varies spatially under uncertainty. It contributes to the literature by incorporating the spatial setting into a risk-averse firm's location decisions in the presence of environmental regulation uncertainty. An increase in the cost of the environmental regulation moves a risk-averse firm closer to the output market. An augmented input or emission tax causes the risk-averse firm to locate closer to the output market. Uncertainty about environmental regulations in the form of the abatement investment and taxes also leads a risk-averse firm to locate closer to the output...

Transcription factors and molecular markers revealed asymmetric contributions between allotetraploid Upland cotton and its two diploid ancestors Bragantia
Jazayeri,Seyed Mehdi; Villamar-Torres,Ronald Oswaldo; Zambrano-Vega,Cristian; Cruzatty,Luz Cecilia García; Oviedo-Bayas,Byron; Santos,Milena do Amaral; Maddela,Naga Raju; Ghafoor,Seyed Mohammad Hossein Ale Seyed; Viot,Christopher.
ABSTRACT Three Gossypium species have been used to breed cotton as they vary in their fiber production and resistance to stresses. Transcription factors (TFs) mostly are present in different copies or isoforms by which they conduct their regulation. Their copy number can determine organism behavior to a cue. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are one of the most informative and versatile molecular markers. Transcription factors of three Gossypium species were compared in silico. Seventy eight percent of TFs were common between the three species. Single copy for each species were 6057 TF. Gossypium hirsutum and G. raimondii shared the most common interspecific TF. Gossypium arboreum species-specific TF were the least. MYB TF family with its subfamilies is the...

Superoxide: a two-edged sword BJMBR
Superoxide (O2-) is the compound obtained when oxygen is reduced by one electron. For a molecule with an unpaired electron, O2- is surprisingly inert, its chief reaction being a dismutation in which it reacts with itself to form H2O2 and oxygen. The involvement of O2- in biological systems was first revealed by the discovery in 1969 of superoxide dismutase, an enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of O2-. Since then it has been found that biological systems produce a bewildering variety of reactive oxidants, all but a few arising ultimately from O2-. These oxidants include O2- itself, H2O2 and alkyl peroxides, hydroxyl radical and other reactive oxidizing radicals, oxidized halogens and halamines, singlet oxygen, and peroxynitrite. These various oxidants...

Alternative oxidase in the branched mitochondrial respiratory network: an overview on structure, function, regulation, and role BJMBR
Sluse,F.E.; Jarmuszkiewicz,W..
Plants and some other organisms including protists possess a complex branched respiratory network in their mitochondria. Some pathways of this network are not energy-conserving and allow sites of energy conservation to be bypassed, leading to a decrease of the energy yield in the cells. It is a challenge to understand the regulation of the partitioning of electrons between the various energy-dissipating and -conserving pathways. This review is focused on the oxidase side of the respiratory chain that presents a cyanide-resistant energy-dissipating alternative oxidase (AOX) besides the cytochrome pathway. The known structural properties of AOX are described including transmembrane topology, dimerization, and active sites. Regulation of the alternative...

Practices and ethical concerns regarding preimplantation diagnosis. Who regulates preimplantation genetic diagnosis in Brazil? BJMBR
Damian,B.B.; Bonetti,T.C.S.; Horovitz,D.D.G..
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) was originally developed to diagnose embryo-related genetic abnormalities for couples who present a high risk of a specific inherited disorder. Because this technology involves embryo selection, the medical, bioethical, and legal implications of the technique have been debated, particularly when it is used to select features that are not related to serious diseases. Although several initiatives have attempted to achieve regulatory harmonization, the diversity of healthcare services available and the presence of cultural differences have hampered attempts to achieve this goal. Thus, in different countries, the provision of PGD and regulatory frameworks reflect the perceptions of scientific groups, legislators, and...

Regulation of transgene expression in genetic immunization BJMBR
Harms,J.S.; Oliveira,S.C.; Splitter,G.A..
The use of mammalian gene expression vectors has become increasingly important for genetic immunization and gene therapy as well as basic research. Essential for the success of these vectors in genetic immunization is the proper choice of a promoter linked to the antigen of interest. Many genetic immunization vectors use promoter elements from pathogenic viruses including SV40 and CMV. Lymphokines produced by the immune response to proteins expressed by these vectors could inhibit further transcription initiation by viral promoters. Our objective was to determine the effect of IFN-<FONT FACE="Symbol">g</FONT> on transgene expression driven by viral SV40 or CMV promoter/enhancer and the mammalian promoter/enhancer for the major...

Activity and functional interaction of alternative oxidase and uncoupling protein in mitochondria from tomato fruit BJMBR
Sluse,F.E.; Jarmuszkiewicz,W..
Cyanide-resistant alternative oxidase (AOX) is not limited to plant mitochondria and is widespread among several types of protists. The uncoupling protein (UCP) is much more widespread than previously believed, not only in tissues of higher animals but also in plants and in an amoeboid protozoan. The redox energy-dissipating pathway (AOX) and the proton electrochemical gradient energy-dissipating pathway (UCP) lead to the same final effect, i.e., a decrease in ATP synthesis and an increase in heat production. Studies with green tomato fruit mitochondria show that both proteins are present simultaneously in the membrane. This raises the question of a specific physiological role for each energy-dissipating system and of a possible functional connection...

Kinetics of high-Level of ß-glucosidase production by a 2-deoxyglucose-resistant mutant of Humicola lanuginosa in submerged fermentation BJM
Bokhari,Syed Ali Imran; Latif,Farooq; Rajoka,Muhammad Ibrahim.
A 2-deoxyglucose-resistant mutant (M7) of Humicola lanuginosa was obtained by exposing conidia to γ-rays and permitting expression in broth containing 0.6% 2-deoxyglucose (DG) and cellobiose (1%) before plating on DG esculin-ferric ammonium citrate agar medium from which colonies showing faster and bigger blackening zones were selected. Kinetic parameters for enhanced ß-glucosidase (BGL) synthesis by M7 were achieved when corncobs acted as the carbon source. The combination between corncobs and corn steep liquor was the best to support higher values of all product formation kinetic parameters. Effect of temperature on the kinetic and thermodynamic attributes of BGL production equilibrium in the wild organismand M7was studied using batch process at eight...

Labels layout of cats and dogs food sold in Brazil and their national regulation adequacy Ciência Rural
Souza,Karina Koerich de; Tonon,Karina Merini; Scussel,Vildes Maria.
Due to the increasing of the pet foods marketing and the need to establish standards for quality and registration purposes, a study was conducted to evaluate the information on the package labels of 64 dogs and cats complete dry foods commercialized in Brazil and compare them to current regulation of the sector. From the total labels analyzed, all of them (100%) presented unconformity for at least one of the items evaluated. The highest rate of non-conformity was observed in the presentation of illustrations and phrases that induced the use of the product based on the false concept of advantage or animal health security (47%), leading to the misunderstanding of the owners. The results demonstrate a deficiency of the manufacturing companies regarding the...

Good agricultural practices in broiler chicken production in the state of Paraná: focus on animal welfare Ciência Rural
Souza,Ana Paula Oliveira; Molento,Carla Forte Maiolino.
ABSTRACT: Broiler chicken welfare regulation at farm level is scarce in Brazil. This research aimed to study good agricultural practices at farm level adopted by broiler chicken companies in the state of Paraná, analyzing them in relation to the promotion of animal welfare. Twenty exporting companies were contacted, 15 answered the questionnaire. The participating companies were responsible for 76.3% of the State broiler production. Indicators related to the availability and the quality of food and water are being adapted by the companies, but still need to be improved. Regarding environmental indicators, companies had concerns about air and litter quality and about the implementation of emergency systems on totally enclosed broiler houses. Natural light...
