Call diversity of Leptodactylus natalensis Lutz, 1930 (Anura; Leptodactylidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Prado,Gustavo M.; Bilate,Marcos; Wogel,Henrique.
The extensive vocal repertoire of Leptodactylus natalensis is described. The field observations were made at three forest fragments of the Tropical Atlantic Domain, in Northeast (State of Alagoas) and Southeast (State of Espírito Santo) regions of Brazil. The vocal repertoire of L. natalensis was constituted by ten notes emitted alone or in different combinations. The several vocalizations were organized in three distinct groups according to the social context in the moment of emission. L. natalensis presents extensive diversity of acoustic signals supported by variations in duration of each note, as well as in the number and sequence of emission of different notes.

Muscidae (Diptera) of medico-legal importance associated with ephemeral organic substrates in seasonally dry tropical forests Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Barbosa,Taciano Moura; Vasconcelos,Simão Dias.
Abstract Muscidae (Diptera) comprises one of the most important taxa in medical, veterinary and forensic entomology, especially due to their association with decomposing carcasses and cadavers. Yet, knowledge on their distribution and behaviour is still incipient in several biomes, which is the case of dry tropical forests. This study aimed to evaluate the attractiveness of different organic substrates to species of Muscidae in areas of seasonally dry forests (Caatinga) in Northern Brazil. Sampling was carried out in five Caatinga areas between 2015 and 2017, using suspended traps baited with bovine spleen, fish or human faeces. When all samplings were combined, 3,176 adults of nine species were collected. The assemblages of muscids had higher richness and...

INTRASPECIFIC VARIATION IN ACOUSTIC TRAITS AND BODY SIZE, AND NEW DISTRIBUTIONAL RECORDS FOR PSEUDOPALUDICOLA GIARETTAI CARVALHO, 2012 (ANURA, LEPTODACTYLIDAE, LEIUPERINAE): IMPLICATIONS FOR ITS CONGENERIC DIAGNOSIS Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
CARVALHO,THIAGO RIBEIRO DE; MARTINS,LUCAS BORGES; TEIXEIRA,BERNARDO FRANCO DA VEIGA; GODINHO,LEANDRO BRAGA; GIARETTA,ARIOVALDO ANTONIO.
In this paper, we provide an updated diagnosis for Pseudopaludicola giarettai based on the morphometric and acoustic variation observed with the assessment of new populations, plus an expansion of its distribution range. Our results support that all acoustic variation observed might be attributed to intraspecific variation. The variation in body size and dorsal stripe patterns observed for Pseudopaludicola giarettai reinforces that the distinctive whistling advertisement call pattern is the most reliable evidence line to diagnose it from its congeners, whereas morphological (robust body, glandular dorsum) and morphometric (body size) features vary considerably within and among populations so that they should no longer be employed as diagnostic features of...

30 years of research on insect galls in Brazil: a scientometric review Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Araújo,Walter Santos de.
Abstract The first systematic studies on insect galls in Brazil date to the early 20th century, after which research on insect galls remained dormant in the country, with interest not reviving until the 1980s. The aim of this study was is to document historical trends in publications about insect galls in Brazil over the last 30 years. Papers about insect galls and galling species in Brazil published in peer-reviewed journals from 1988 to 2017 were compiled. A total of 1,378 papers were analyzed, of which 182 addressed insect galls in Brazil. The results showed that the number of publications on the subject has been increasing over the last 30 years, and especially in the last decade. The diversity of journals that published on the subject has also been...

GENERA OF BELYTINAE (HYMENOPTERA: DIAPRIIDAE) RECORDED IN THE ATLANTIC DENSE OMBROPHILOUS FOREST FROM PARAÍBA TO SANTA CATARINA, BRAZIL Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
QUADROS,ALEX L.; BRANDÃO,CARLOS ROBERTO F..
ABSTRACT The parasitoid wasps Belytinae (Hymenoptera: Diaprioidea: Diapriidae) recorded thus far in the Atlantic Dense Ombrophilous Forest are reviewed at the supra specific level. The knowledge about the diversity of Belytinae in the Atlantic Forest is relatively poor, although these parasitoids may play a key role in the natural regulation of populations of the Mycetophilidae and Sciaridae (Diptera). The material used in this study comes mostly from standardized collections in 18 regularly spaced sites, from Paraíba to Santa Catarina Brazilian states, between 2000 and 2002, by the project “Richness and diversity of Hymenoptera and Isoptera along a latitudinal gradient in the Atlantic Forest - the eastern Brazilian rain forest” (Biota/SP - FAPESP). Abrawayaomys ruschii Cunha & Cruz, 1979 (Rodentia, Cricetidae) no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Pereira,Luciana Guedes; Geise,Lena; Cunha,André Almeida; Cerqueira,Rui.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to shed light on the boundaries of two sympatric species of Cuernavaca, C. inexacta and C. longula, to enable further ecological studies. Species in this genus are associated with water hyacinths in wetlands of Northeastern Argentina (Paraná-Paraguay waterway system) and the Peruvian Amazon. This work lists new host records for Cuernavaca, which include Pontederia crassipes, P. cordata, P. subovata and P. rotundifolia (Pontederiaceae). A redescription for C. inexacta with new diagnostic genitalic features is also provided, as well as an updated identification key and a distribution map. The genus is distributed throughout Central and South America, reaching north and central Argentina in its southernmost distribution.

Revision of the neotropical Anacharitinae genus Acanthaegilips (Hym., Cynipoidea, Figitidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Ros-Farré,Palmira; Sporrong,Michael; Ronquist,Fredrik; Pujade-Villar,Juli.
We revise the genus Acanthaegilips, a genus of anacharitine figitids ocurring in South America. Members of this genus are characterized by having a long scutellar spine, a unique character in the Anacharitinae. The only previously known species (A. brasiliensis) is redescribed and eleven new species are described: A. macropennis, A. ashmeadi, A. levis, A. masneri, A. diazi, A. dentis, A. occultus, A. alienus, A. exiguus, A. huggerti, and A. carinatus. A key to species is presented and distribution records are given for each species. The known records of the genus extend from the southern Neotropics to Mexico. The biology of Acanthaegilips remains unknown; other members of the Anacharitinae are parasitoids of aphid-feeding Neuroptera larvae.

Fecundity, embryo size and embryo loss in the estuarine shrimp Salmoneus carvachoi Anker, 2007 (Crustacea: Alpheidae) from a tidal mudflat in northeastern Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Oliveira,Mário Vitor; Costa-Souza,Ana Carla; Mariano,Rodolfo; Almeida,Alexandre Oliveira.
Abstract Studies on fecundity and embryo size have been frequently used to infer about the reproductive potential, embryogenesis, and the energy investment in embryo production in crustaceans. These parameters are relevant to the knowledge of life-history and diversity of reproductive strategies developed by this group. This study addressed the embryo production by the estuarine shrimp Salmoneus carvachoiAnker, 2007, a poorly known caridean shrimp. We investigated whether there was (1) a correlation between fecundity and carapace length, (2) an increase in embryo volume along the embryonic development, and (3) loss of embryos along development. In addition, we investigated whether the esternite length and height and width of the pleura of the second...

Historical Biogeography of a Clade of Liolaemus (Iguania: Liolaemidae) based on ancestral areas and dispersal-vicariance analysis (DIVA) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Díaz Gómez,Juan Manuel; Lobo,Fernando.
Although many phylogenetic studies have been made on the genus Liolaemus, they are inappropriate for a biogeographic study because of incomplete taxon sampling. Here we develop a biogeographic analysis using a new phylogenetic study of the chiliensis group, which differs from the other studies in having his members fully represented. The biogeographic analysis presented here consists in reconstructing the ancestral area of this clade, under three different methods of analysis: Fitch Optimisation, Dispersal Vicariance Analysis and Weighted Ancestral Area Analysis. The analyses were made on phylogenies from parsimony under equally weighted characters, as well as under implied weighting. The equally weighted tree recovers most of the groupings proposed in...

REDESCRIPCIÓN DE POTAMOLITHUS SUPERSULCATUS PILSBRY, 1896 (GASTROPODA, TATEIDAE) DEL SUR DE LA CUENCA DEL PLATA Pap.
Phylogenetic relationships of the genus Sibynophis (Serpentes: Colubroidea) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Zaher,Hussam; Grazziotin,Felipe G.; Graboski,Roberta; Fuentes,Ricardo G.; Sánchez-Martinez,Paola; Montingelli,Giovanna G.; Zhang,Ya-Ping; Murphy,Robert W..
We present the results of the first molecular analysis of the phylogenetic affinities of the Asian colubroid genus Sibynophis. We recovered a sister-group relationship between Sibynophis and the New World Scaphiodontophis. Although Liophidium sometimes is associated with these genera, the relationship is distant. Morphological characters that Liophidium shares with Sibynophis and Scaphiodontophis are resolved as homoplasies that probably reflect the similarities of their specialized feeding habits. The traditional subfamily Sibynophiinae is elevated to the family-level, and Scaphiodontophiinae is placed in its synonymy.

Morphological analysis of Mecosarthron Buquet and Xixuthrus Thomson and Reevaluation of Generic Assignment of Xixuthrus domingoensis Fisher (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae, Prioninae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Santos-Silva,Antonio; Lingafelter,Steven W..
The characters defining Mecosarthron Buquet, 1840 and Xixuthrus Thomson 1864 are discussed, along with a historical review of the literature that described and classified these taxa. Through morphological examination of these genera and most of the included species, we addressed the systematic placement of Xixuthrus domingoensis Fisher, 1932 that was placed in Mecosarthron by Ivie (1985). We restore its placement in the genus Xixuthrus. The first description of the female of X. domingoensis is provided, along with comparative redescriptions of Mecosarthron gounellei (Lameere, 1903), and M. buphagus Buquet, 1840. We include a key to the species currently in Mecosarthron.
