First record of Ophiocordyceps dipterigena (Ascomycota: Hypocreales: Ophiocordycipitaceae) infecting adults of Melanagromyza sojae (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in Brazil Ciência Rural
Salgado-Neto,Geraldo; Sanz-Veiga,Priscila Andre; Vaz,Marcos André Braz.
ABSTRACT: This note is the first report on the infection of adult stage of Melanagromyza sojae Zehntner, 1900 (Diptera: Agromyzidae) by the entomopathogenic fungus Ophiocordyceps dipterigena (Hypocreales: Ophiocordycipitaceae) (Berk. & Broome) G. H. Sung, J.M. Sung, Hywel-Jones & Spatafora, in subtropical Brazil. Entomopathogenic fungi, which attack dipteran insects, are of great scientific and economic importance mainly due to their potential as biological control agents of insect pests. Our findings bring new perspectives on the geographical distribution and host range of Ophiocordyceps dipterigena. We emphasize the need of further studies and research on new biological control agents of agricultural pests such as the soybean stem miner fly.

Relationship between chemical properties of the soil and the occurrence of Bacillus thuringiensis Ciência Rural
Polanczyk,Ricardo Antonio; Zanúncio,José Cola; Alves,Sérgio Batista.
The soil and other substrates such as mushroom compounds are the main sources of new Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates for Integrated Pest Management programs. This study describes the relationship between chemical properties of the soil (pH, OM, P3+, K1+, Ca2+, Mg2+, H1++Al3+, B3+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Mn2+ and Zn2+) and the occurrence of Bt in Brazil. A total of 1,197 bacterial colonies were obtained, being 512 of them identified as Bt. The Bt index (iBt), which is the relation between Bt colonies and bacterial counts ranged from 0.18 to 0.86. The iBt may be expressed with the formula: iBt= -0.4 + 0.6Ca2+ + 0.07Cu2+ + 0.009Fe2+ - 0.53Mg2+ -0.12Mn2+ + 1.26Zn2+. A cluster of samples with fewer colonies and a high negative correlation (antagonism) between Mn2+...

Production of cuticle-degrading proteases by Nomuraea rileyi and its virulence against Anticarsia gemmatalis Ciência Rural
Nunes,Ana Rita Fonseca; Martins,Juliana Nascimento; Furlaneto,Márcia Cristina; Barros,Neiva Monteiro de.
Nomuraea rileyi represents an important natural control agent of Anticarsia gemmatalis preventing populations from reaching economic threshold levels in soybean. During the processes of host infection, entomopathogenic fungi produce extracellular proteases, which degrade the host cuticle and are suggested to be virulence determinants. It was examined the production of subtilisin-like (Pr1) and trypsin-like (Pr2) proteases in two strains (NR458 and CG434) of N. rileyi and its possible role in the process of pathogenicity to this caterpillar. Fungal growth was performed in a mineral medium containing nitrate, and supplemented with the cuticle or exuviae from A. gemmatalis, or with the non-cuticular substrate casein. In medium containing nitrate as sole...

Natural parasitism by Trichogramma spp. in agroecosystems of the Mid-North, Brazil Ciência Rural
Querino,Ranyse Barboa; Silva,Nadja Nara Pereira da; Zucchi,Roberto Antonio.
ABSTRACT: The micro-hymenopterans of genus Trichogramma are eggs parasitoids used in the biological control of lepidopteran pests. The objectives of this study was to record the interaction of species of Trichogramma and their hosts on crops in the Mid-North, in the states of Maranhão and Piauí, Brazil. Lepidopteran eggs were sampled on crops and non-crops. Trichogramma atopovirilia , T. manicobai , T. galloi and T. pretiosum occur naturally in eggs of eight lepidopteran species. Natural parasitism shown by Trichogramma species reveals the importance of these parasitoids as agents for biological control in the Mid-North region.

Biological insect control using Metarhizium anisopliae: morphological, molecular, and ecological aspects Ciência Rural
Tiago,Patricia Vieira; Oliveira,Neiva Tinti de; Lima,Elza Áurea de Luna Alves.
Microbial control of insects is based on the rational use of pathogens to maintain environmentally balanced pest population levels, and Metarhizium anisopliae has been the most studied and most utilized fungal species for that purpose. The natural genetic variability of entomopathogenic fungi is considered one of the principal advantages of microbial insect control. The inter- and intraspecific variability and the genetic diversity and population structures of Metarhizium and other entomopathogenic fungi have been examined using ITS-RFLP, ISSR, and ISSP molecular markers. The persistence of M. anisopliae in the soil and its possible effects on the structures of resident microbial communities must be considered when selecting isolates for biological insect...

Reduction of incidence and severity of Septoria lycopersici leaf spot of tomato with bacteria and yeasts Ciência Rural
Blum,Luiz Eduardo Bassay.
Septoria leaf spot, caused by Septoria lycopersici, is an important disease of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) which is mainly controlled by fungicide sprays. One of the alternatives to reduce fungicide applications is the use of leaf antagonists such as yeast and bacterium. This study was conducted from 1994 through 1995 in Auburn, AL, USA. The pathogen and one antagonist were isolated from field plants. In greenhouse, six yeast and one bacterial isolates were tested, in a set of seven experiments. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with four to eight treatments and six replications. The antagonists (1-3 × 10(8) colony forming units ml-1) were inoculated 48h before the inoculation of the pathogen (1-2 × 10(5) conidia ml-1),...

ABSTRACT: Natural biological control is one of the major causes responsible for reduction of pest population in agricultural ecosystem. However, natural biological control importance is usually minimized by not being estimated. This study reports the occurrence of Campoletis sonorensis (Cameron, 1886) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), Archytas marmoratus (Townsend, 1915) and Archytas incertus (Macquart, 1851) (Diptera: Tachinidae) associated with Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner, 1809) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). The rate of larval parasitism was up to 41% in structured refuge areas of cotton, without chemical control with insecticides. This study strengthens our knowledge relating to parasitoids associated with natural control of H. armigera in the American...
