Determining the Impact of Crawfish Imports on U.S. Domestic Prices AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
The study identifies the linkage between imports and the domestic price of crawfish. The results show a simultaneous increase in imports and domestic prices of crawfish while showing a negative relationship between domestic landings and price. Each model shows that there is a seasonality effect on the domestic price of crawfish. The study also shows that increases in the domestic supplies of shrimp, tilapia, and clams generated increases in the domestic crawfish price while increases in imported and domestic supplies of beef and imported supplies of pork decreased the domestic crawfish price.

Remittances and economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean: The Impact of the human capital development AgEcon
Garcia-Fuentes, Pablo A.; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
Remittances are one source of external financing for developing countries that have been increasing in both size and importance as of late. However, the issue about the impact on economic growth from remittances is still opened for discussion. This paper adds to this discussion by investigating the impact of remittances on growth through human capital using a panel data analysis for a sample of 14 Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries during the period 1975-2000. The results indicate that remittances have a positive impact on economic growth in the representative countries from the LAC region; however, the realization of this impact holds only when the remittance receiving country has a minimum threshold of human capital stock.

IMPACTS OF EXHCHANGE RATE ON TERMS OF TRADE AND VOLUME OF TRADE AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
Direct and indirect effects of exchange rates on foreign and home prices may induce a change in terms of trade and volume of trade. In particular, the price effect in substitutability between foreign and home products and endogeneity of the foreign price provide evidence for the indirect impact of the exchange rate on home price. Furthermore, elasticity of substitution and degree of returns to scale influence the impact of the exchange rate on terms of trade and trade volume. In an empirical examination of the Korean beef market, this study found a decrease in terms of trade and an increase in volume of trade when the U.S. dollar depreciates, and an increase in terms of trade and a decrease in volume of trade when the U.S. dollar appreciates. However, the...

A PARTIAL-EQUILIBRIUM SIMULATION OF INCREASING THE U.S. TARIFF-RATE SUGAR QUOTA FOR CUBA AND MEXICO AgEcon
Petrolia, Daniel R.; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
A model consisting of Cuba, Mexico, the U.S., and an aggregated “"Rest of the World"” was developed to simulate increases in U.S. sugar imports from Cuba and Mexico. Results indicate that increased imports would generate up to $505 million in U.S. net gains, and that world prices increase only minimally.

An Examination of Inverse Demand Models: An Application to the U.S. Crawfish Industry AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This study analyzes quantity impacts of imported crawfish tailmeat on Louisiana crawfish tailmeat prices, and demonstrates the statistical validity and proper interpretation of cross substitution within inverse demand systems. Among five inverse demand systems, the Differential Inverse National Bureau of Research (DINBR) model shows no violation of econometric assumptions for the data analyzed. By using Allais coefficients proposed by Barten and Bettendorf (1989), we show substitutability among the five fish species.

AN ANALYSIS OF LATIN AMERICAN PEANUT TRADE AgEcon
Lee, Dae-Seob; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Fletcher, Stanley M..
The Latin American peanut industry is estimated using SUR. In scenarios, their demand is not affected dramatically by both price changes. The price changes affect the Latin American supply by roughly 15% and net trade by approximately 50%, compared to less than 10% in world price shock.

The Impact of Ethanol Production on the U.S. Gasoline Market AgEcon
Marzoughi, Hassan; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper uses a simultaneous equation system to determine the impact of ethanol fuel production on the U.S. motor gasoline market, especially gasoline prices. Based on estimation results, every billion gallon increase in ethanol production decreases gasoline prices by as much as 6 cents.

A GAME THEORETIC ANALYSIS OF U.S. RICE EXPORT POLICY: THE CASE OF JAPAN AND KOREA AgEcon
Lee, Dae-Seob; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
As a result of the Uruguay Round (UR), the impact on the international rice market is dramatic. The major U.S. benefit of the UR has been the access to the Japanese market. However, the U.S. share of this import market has been unstable and the share of Korean rice market is nearly zero prior to February 2002. Econometric estimation and Political Preference Function (PPF) approach are incorporated into a game theoretic analysis to analyze U.S. export potential to Japan and Korea.

IMPORT DEMAND SYSTEM ANALYSIS OF THE SOUTH KOREAN WINE MARKET WITH THE SOURCE DIFFERENTATED AIDS MODEL AgEcon
Lee, Young-Jae; Kennedy, P. Lynn; Hilbun, Brian M..
Under the assumption of block substitutability and partial aggregation, a source differentiated AIDS model was used to estimate South Korean wine import demand. Empirical results indicate that South Korean wine consumers have a strong preference for high quality French wines. French wines are shown to be substitutes for wines from other countries in the South Korean wine market. Since the implementation of a free trade agreement between South Korea and Chile, Chilean wines have steadily increased their market share exhibiting strong price competitiveness in the South Korean wine market.

Production Response to Increased Imports: The Case of U.S. Sugar AgEcon
Kennedy, P. Lynn; Schmitz, Andrew.
This paper considers how the welfare of U.S. sugar producers can be affected by the use of production controls in the presence of rising sugar imports and falling sugar prices, taking into account the negative externalities associated with U.S. sugar production. Even if production controls are used, producer welfare can be affected negatively under rising imports.

COMPETITIVENESS IN THE WORLD SUGAR INDUSTRY: A COMPARISON OF THE EU AND U.S. SUGAR SECTORS AgEcon
Kennedy, P. Lynn; Harrison, R. Wes.
The EU and U.S. have historically been insulated from volatilities in the world sugar market. This paper reviews changes in WTO and regional trade agreements and interactions with domestic policies. A framework is developed to analyze the competitive positions of these sugar industries given world sugar policy reforms.

Economic Performance of U.S. Multinational Agribusinesses: Foreign Direct Investment and Firm Strategy AgEcon
Garcia-Fuentes, Pablo A.; Ferreira, Gustavo F.C.; Kennedy, P. Lynn.
This paper empirically assesses the sequential relationships among firm strategic factors, FDI activity, and economic performance for a sample of U.S.-based Multinational agribusinesses. The most important findings of this research is a positive direct effect of FDI on performance, the complementary effect between FDI and firm strategic factors (positive and significant interaction terms) on performance, and the positive effect of FDI on performance given some thresholds of firm strategic factors. Specifically, it provides insights about the direct effect of FDI on performance, as well as about the joint effect of firm size and FDI, marketing intensity and FDI, and capital intensity and FDI on performance. These findings provide evidence that FDI activity...
