Effects of black soldier fly meal in poultry and fish diets on performance and product quality Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Stadtlander, Timo; Wohlfahrt, Jens; Sandrock, Christoph; Maurer, Veronika.
Insect-based protein meals are in discussion as sustainable components in livestock and fish diets, with a potential to recycle wasted food materials and to replace partly feeds from arable land. Black Soldier Fly (BSF; Hermetia Illucens) is of particular interest in this context. Since insect production for animal feed appears as an additional trophic level in the food chain, it should either base on substrates, which are not directly edible for livestock and fish, or significantly improve feed efficiency or product quality to justify its application. Feed efficiency and product quality after replacing conventional protein sources by BSF meal were therefore tested in recent experiments with layers, broilers and trout. In a layer experiment, respectively...

Distribution of infection with gastro-intestinal nematodes in different groups of dairy goats in Switzerland and its influence on milk production Organic Eprints
Grohmann, Markus; Winckler, Christoph; Perler, Erika; Isensee, Anne; Christ, Benedikt; Amsler, Zivile; Werne, Steffen; Maurer, Veronika; Heckendorn, Felix.
The aim of this field study was to investigate interactions between gastro-intestinal nematode (GIN) infection, milk performance and age in goats in order to identify animal groups with higher susceptibility to GIN. On 3 farms (farm A: n = 29, farm B: n = 33, farm C: n = 117 milking goats) fecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were performed in summer. All 179 milking goats were enrolled in FECRT and individual milk performance was recorded before and after FEC for FECRT. Furthermore, in early summer and autumn bulk fecal samples were cultured for every farm and GIN genera were determined.

Impact of US Brown Swiss genetics on milk quality from low-input herds in Switzerland: Interactions with season Organic Eprints
Stergiadis, Sokratis; Bieber, Anna; Chatzidimitriou, Eleni; Franceschin, Enrica; Isensee, Anne; Rempelos, Leonidas; Baranski, Marcin; Maurer, Veronika; Cozzi, Giulio; Bapst, Beat; Butler, Gillian; Leifert, Carlo.
This study investigated the effect of, and interactions between, US Brown Swiss (BS) genetics and season on milk yield, basic composition and fatty acid profiles, from cows on low-input farms in Switzerland. Milk samples (n = 1,976) were collected from 1,220 crossbreed cows with differing proportions of BS, Braunvieh and Original Braunvieh genetics on 40 farms during winter-housing and summer-grazing. Cows with more BS genetics produced more milk in winter but not in summer, possibly because of underfeeding potentially high-yielding cows on low-input pasture-based diets. Cows with more Original Braunvieh genetics produced milk with more (i) nutritionally desirable eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids, throughout the year, and (ii) vaccenic and...

Control methods for Dermanyssus gallinae in systems for laying hens: results of an international seminar Organic Eprints
Mul, M.F.; van Niekerk, Thea; Chirico, J.; Maurer, Veronika; Kilpinen, O.; Sparagano, O.; Thind, B.; Zoons, J.; Moore, D.; Bell, B.; Gjevre, A.-G.; Chauve, C..
This paper reports the results of a seminar on poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae. Eighteen researchers from eight European countries discussed life cycle issues of the mite, effects of mites on hens and egg production, and monitoring and control methods for PRM in poultry facilities. It was determined that PRM probably causes more damage than envisaged, with the cost in The Netherlands alone reaching 11 million euro per annum. However a great deal is still unknown about PRM (e.g. reproduction, survival methods, etc.) and that PRM monitoring is an important instrument in recognising and admitting the problem and in taking timely measures. Currently, the most promising control method combines heating the hen house in combination with chemical...

Silicas for control of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae Organic Eprints
Maurer, Veronika; Perler, Erika.
Control of the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae is a challenge for organic as well as conventional egg producers. In organic agriculture, control should be attempted by mechanically acting substances (e.g. oils or diatomaceous earth), before acaricides are applied. Diatomaceous earth (DE) without acaricides was at least as effective as DE supplemented with pyrethrum or essential oils and a liquid formulation of silica in vitro. In on farm experiments, DE was effective during a limited period only, whereas the liquid formulation had a very good residual effect over several weeks.

Mastleistung und Fleischqualität von männlichen Legehybriden bei Fütterung unterschiedlicher Proteinquellen Organic Eprints
Ammer, Stefanie; Quander, Nele; Gangnat, IDM; Maurer, Veronika; Leiber, Florian.
The effects of genotype and protein source on the performance of male layer hybrids compared to a fattening strain were investigated. The layer hybrids Lohmann Brown (LB, n = 90, male), Lohmann Selected Leghorn (LSL, n = 90, male) and the fattening hybrid Hubbard JA-757 (HUB, n = 90, mixed sex) were divided into three feeding groups: 1) commercial feed with 25,5 % soybean cake (Control), 2) control diet + alfalfa meal ad lib. (Alf-ext) and 3) control diet inclusive 12 % replace of soybean cake by alfalfa meal (Alf-int). Fattening periods were 63, 91 and 104 days for HUB, LB and LSL, respectively. Final weights were influenced by the interaction of genotype and feed (HUB 1843, LB 1871, LSL 1631 g). Highest daily weight gains showed HUB, followed by LB and...

Organic poultry farming - opportunities and challenges Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Horsted, Klaus; Maurer, Veronika.
Many different poultry breeds are kept by smallholder farmers throughout the world, some of whom are organic or agroecological, although not certified organic in all cases. Many of these breeds are locally adapted, multi-purpose, and indigenous. At a global level, smallholder agroecological or organic poultry flocks contribute to food security, protein supply, and the livelihood of many families, especially women, in many smallholder settings. This chapter introduces organic poultry farming and focusses on ways in which its practices can be improved. The chapter examines poultry as part of ecological systems and cycles and considers how the precautionary principle and concepts of naturalness can be applied to this area. The chapter examines health and...

The genetic basis for the selection of goats resistant to gastrointestinal nematodes Organic Eprints
Heckendorn, Felix; Perler, Erika; Isensee, Anne; Amsler, Zivile; Werne, Steffen; Grohmann, Markus; Uzunoglu, Ferit; Saratsis, Anastasios; Maurer, Veronika; Stricker, Christian.
In Australia and New Zealand the formulation of breeding values for GIN resistance led to large selection programs in sheep successfully improving genetic resistance to GIN. Compared to sheep, the progress with respect to breeding for GIN resistance for various reasons has been much slower in goats. Data on heritabilities of potential auxiliary traits for selection and knowledge about their genetic correlation to production traits is limited. The present Swiss study was designed to fill this gap. A total of 1.500 goats (20 flocks) of the Alpine and Saanen breed were enrolled in the study. They were individually phenotyped twice for faecal egg count (FEC), FEC of Haemonchus (HCFEC; using fluorescin based differentiation of eggs), FAMACHA eye scores and...

Mitigating the impact of agriculture on air quality and climate change: Solutions for improved Nitrogen management Organic Eprints
Steinemann, Beatrice; Gattinger, Andreas; Krauss, Maike; Berner, Alfred; Leiber, Florian; Maurer, Veronika; Meier, Matthias; Oehen, Bernadette; Bautze, Lin; Niggli, Urs.
Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased since the pre-industrial era, driven largely by economic and population growth, and are now higher than ever. This has led to atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide that are unprecedented in at least the last 800 000 years. Their effects, together with those of other anthropogenic drivers, have been detected throughout the climate system and are extremely likely to have been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.
