Since 1989, an homogeneous Crassostrea gigas oyster stock has been distributed once a year on several rearing sites in Brittany (3 populations per site). The main quantitative and qualitative growth descriptors, which reflect water quality effects during the monitoring period, are estimated at the end of each year. The 1989-1992 analysis prompted us to describe various growth responses correlated to biotops: oyster production in open areas influenced by oceanic waters was fairly constant in quality, including size and Polydora sp. infestation. In contrast, oysters in estuarine areas, partly affected by eutrophication (e.g., Aber Benoît, Pen Bé), or with a low carrying capacity, were characterized by weight and Polydora sp. infestation heterogeneity. These... |

The network IFREMER/REMORA has watched every year, since 1993, from February to December, mortality, growth and quality criteria of two oyster class-size ("juveniles" of the first-year c1ass and "adults" of the second year c1ass), distributed among various stations of the French oyster areas. This has provided a quite standard and simple annual assessment of the rearing results, generally tallied with professional observations. From year to year, data series have been obtained, from which mean values (references), chronological trends or spatial differences can be analysed. Results in Brittany, from 1993 to 1998, show that, in a "normal" year, 30 g oysters grow to 60-80 g at the end of the year, with a mortality rate of 10-15%. Mortality occures mainly in... |

For centuries human populations have moved live shellfish around the world for consumption or aquaculture purposes; being relayed from their area of origin for growout or sale. This is in contrast to the inadvertent anthropogenic spreading of species via e.g. ballast waters. There are inherent risks associated with transfer of shellfish including introducing of alien species, diseases, pests, bacteria and viruses associated with the translocated species in addition to the potential impact on genetic integrity and biodiversity of local stocks. Many examples of severe ecological impacts have been documented worldwide owing to the intentional or unintentional translocation of animals. It is therefore important to develop risk reduction methods which have not... |

(subtidal on-bottom rearings), has been the year of the gestation for the RISCO-QB project (Risks in shellfish farming, in baie de Quiberon). Discussions with various potential partners have resulted in the project drafting with 3 main objectives : - estimation of the trophic capacity of the bay and adjustment of the rearing biomass, - impact of sediment nearness upon on-bottom technique and adjustment of the rearing practices, - appraisal of the impact of these 2 factors (trophic capacity and sediment nearness) on the budget of the farming companies and their consequences in the management of the mortality risk. Concurrently with the project writing, pre-studies, mainly methodological, have been conducted in the bay since 2007 in order to investigate the... |

Marine diseases have major impacts on ecosystems and economic consequences for aquaculture and fisheries. Understanding origin, spread and risk factors of disease is crucial for management, but data in the ocean are limited compared to the terrestrial environment. Here we investigated how the marine environment drives the spread of viral disease outbreak affecting The Pacific oyster worldwide by using a spatial epidemiology framework. We collected environmental and oyster health data at 46 sites spread over an area of 300 km2 along an inshore-offshore gradient during an epizootic event and conducted risk analysis. We found that disease broke out in the intertidal farming area and spread seaward. Mortalities and virus detection were observed in oysters... |

A sampling strategy for the estimation of mussels stocks on "bouchots" was elaborated in 1987 and 1988 in the Pertuis Breton area, along the french atlantic coast. This strategy optimizes estimations of number of posts per bouchot, heights of posts wearing mussels, sections of posts and mussels, and eventually densities of mussels, from cost/precision and minimum uptake considerations. The adopted plan is compared to others and the allocation of sampling efforts is optimized. |

Complex interactions between oyster, environment and pathogens were observed during the MOREST (2001-2005) project on summer mortality events of Crassostrea gigas oysters in France. The talk will show how nutrition level increasing reproductive intensity generates a risk for pathogen infection under synergistic effect of temperature and stress. Moreover, a genetic component is associated to specific reproductive performances and spawning behaviour. To better understand origin of such resistance or susceptibility to summer mortality, other characteristics as stress susceptibility, energy management and hemocyte activities of oysters from the two phenotypes were compared. This first comparison suggests interactions between stress, reproduction and defence... |

This study (“Risco”), implicating both industry, socio-economic experts and biologists, was funded by the Regional Council of Brittany, for 3 years (2010-2013), to investigate upon the origin of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) mortalities in the bay of Quiberon (South Brittany, France). Specific mortalities of adult oysters were recorded in this bay in 2006, whereas mortalities of one year old spat were observed since in 2008 in this bay as at a national scale. The experimental protocol in 2010, including a monthly survey of oyster batches at 15 experimental stations, allowed to assess the risk for one-year oysters, due to viral disease. A clear spatial distribution of this risk was evidenced, with a western area spared from contamination and mortality, and a... |

An ecosystem-based approach to bivalve aquaculture management is a strategy for the integration of aquaculture within the wider ecosystem, including human aspects, in such a way that it promotes sustainable development, equity, and resilience of ecosystems. Given the linkage between social and ecological systems, marine regulators require an ecosystem-based decision framework that structures and integrates the relationships between these systems and facilitates communication of aquaculture-environment interactions and policy-related developments and decisions. The Drivers-Pressures-State Change-Impact-Response (DPSIR) management framework incorporates the connectivity between human and ecological issues and would permit available performance indicators to... |

The year 1990 is the second of a regional monitoring program on production assessment of Crassostrea in Britlany. 9 sites have been tested with 3 stations per site and 3 oysters bags in each station, at 3 different densities : 170, 210 and 250 oysters per bag. 18 month old oysters stocked in bags in march were analyzed 43 weeks later, by variables concerning growth, survival, quality... The growth was lower at higher densities, more or less according to sites. As previously, differences between sites and stations are observed, with some confirmations (higher mortalities in Aber Benoît site) and also evolutions (growth and Polydora infestations improvement in Pen Bé site). |

Integration of shellfish farming along the French shoreline (around 5500 km) has been progressive, as marine bivalve culture is a traditional activity in our country. The history of mussel culture relates that the "bouchot" technique (intertidal culture on wooden poles, producing annually around 60,000 tons) was developed as early as the XIIIth century, by a refugee attempting to capture birds by sticking branches of brushwood along the shore. The European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, already appreciated at the Roman period, was first cultivated in France after Victor Coste introduced the technique of spat collection at the end of the XIXth century. The Pacific cupped oyster, genus Crassostrea, now the most-cultivated in France (around 120,000 tons marketed... |
