Revised catalogue of the type specimens of recent fishes in the Institute of Taxonomic Zoology (Zoölogisch Museum), University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands Naturalis
Nijssen, H.; Tuijl, L. van; Isbrücker, J.H..
This is a revision of the catalogue issued in 1982 (Nijssen et al.) of type specimens of Recent fishes in the collections of the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA), also named Institute of Taxonomic Zoology of the University of Amsterdam. These include 203 holotypes, 3 neotypes, 56 lectotypes, 1839 syntypes, 5965 paratypes, and 1010 paralectotypes of 884 nominal species or subspecies. Of syntype series, only the specimens still present in the ZMA collection are recorded. In many cases, specimens of such series have been sent on exchange among others to Vienna (1915), Leiden (1917 and following), Manilla, New York (1927) and London. Whether or not all of these specimens are really syntypes is not clear, due to incomplete curatorial administration during the...

New data on Metaloricaria paucidens from French Guiana and Surinam (Pisces, Siluriformes, Loricariidae) Naturalis
Isbrücker, I.J.H.; Nijssen, H..
A large number of previously unrecorded specimens of mailed catfishes of the genus Metaloricaria Isbrücker, 1975 (Loricariinae, tribe Harttiini, subtribe Metaloricariina) is compared with the known specimens from French Guiana and Surinam. This results in the recognition of two subspecies, viz., M. paucidens paucidens Isbrücker, 1975, from the rivers Oyapock and Maroni (French Guiana, Surinam), and M. p. nijsseni (Boeseman, 1976) from the rivers Suriname, Saramacca, Nickerie and Corantijn (Surinam). These subspecies were originally described as two different species, even within two different genera: Metaloricaria paucidens Isbrücker, 1975, and Harttia nijsseni Boeseman, 1976. Morphometric and meristic data, together with illustrations are given of the two...

Groot, S.J. de; Nijssen, H..
On the North West African shelf 98 species of fishes were collected of which a classification is given. Three species have hitherto been recorded only farther South. The status of Platophrys podas africanus (Nielsen, 1961) is discussed.

Otoliths of the wolf-fishes (genus Anarrhichas Linnaeus, 1758) from the Northern Atlantic (Pisces, Perciformes) Naturalis
Nijssen, H..
While working at the Rijksinstituut voor Visserijonderzoek (R.V.I.O.) at IJmuiden, I received through the courtesy of Mr. C. van Delft some specimens of the three northern Atlantic species of wolf-fishes. At IJmuiden they are brought in by commercial trawlers. The only data in the literature known to me concerning the otoliths of Anarrhichas are those furnished by FROST, 1929. This author published only very sketchy illustrations of two of the northern Atlantic species. I thought it useful, therefore, to describe, illustrate and compare in this paper the otoliths of all three Anarrhichas species. The three species of wolf-fishes in the northern Atlantic are: Anarrhichas lupus, A. minor and A. latifrons. The otoliths (sagittae) in this genus are of very...

The South American Mailed Catfishes of the genus Pseudoloricaria Bleeker, 1862 (Pisces, Siluriformes, Loricariidae) Naturalis
Isbrücker, I.J.H.; Nijssen, H..
Two species of South American Mailed Catfishes of the genus Pseudoloricaria Bleeker, 1862 are redescribed and figured from type-specimens and additional material: Pseudoloricaria laeviuscula (Valenciennes, 1840), and Pseudoloricaria punctata (Regan, 1904). Since the provenance of the holotype of P. laeviuscula is unknown, the type-locality of this species is restricted to the mouth of the Rio Tapajós at Santarém. The lectotype is selected from the three syntypes of P. punctata, and its type-locality is restricted to the Rio Amazonas at Manaus. P. laeviuscula is distributed only in the Rio Amazonas basin in Brazil, whereas P. punctata occurs in several river systems, viz. the Rio Amazonas basin in Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador, in the Rio Parnaiba, Est. Piaui,...

First record of the worm pipefish, Nerophis lumbriciformis (Pennant, 1776) in coastal waters of the Netherlands, with notes on other animal species recently recorded from the Oosterschelde Naturalis
Nijssen, H.; Buizer, D.A.G..
The Worm pipefish, Nerophis lumbriciformis (Pennant, 1776) is recorded for the first time from along the coast of the Netherlands. A juvenile specimen of 44 mm total length was caught in the Oosterschelde on November 21st, 1982. A key to the species of pipefishes from the coastal waters of the Netherlands and from adjacent coasts is given. Other animal species recently recorded for the first time from the Oosterschelde are enumerated.

Isbrücker, I.J.H.; Nijssen, H..
Pyxiloricaria menezesi n. gen., n. sp., is described and illustrated from Rio Miranda (Est. Mato Grosso do Sul) and from Rio Cuiabá (Est. Mato Grosso), Brazil. It is assigned to the subtribe Planiloricariina of the tribe Loricariini, subfamily Loricariinae. A comparison is made with sympatric Pseudohemiodon cf. laticeps (Regan, 1904).

On the identity of Corydoras nattereri Steindachner, 1877 with the description of a new species, Corydoras prionotos (Pisces, Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) Naturalis
Nijssen, H.; Isbrücker, I.J.H..
A redescription and figures of Corydoras nattereri Steindachner, 1877, are given together with a description and figures of a new species, Corydoras prionotos, sympatric with Corydoras nattereri, with comparable dimensions and a similar colour pattern. A total of 1066 specimens were examined, including primary type-material of Corydoras juquiaae Von Ihering, 1907, and of Corydoras nattereri triseriatus Von Ihering, 1911, which are both placed in synonymy of C. nattereri, the holotype of which is lost. A neotype for Corydoras nattereri is designated. Corydoras prionotos differs from C. nattereri mainly in having the medial border of the pectoral-fin spine strongly serrate.
