Permanent and permeable edges, where natural enemies can feed, overwinter or easily cross over, should enhance the early arrival of these predators to crops. We evaluated the abundance and species richness of coccinellids migrating to alfalfa fields adjacent to Eucalyptus, a mix of false acacia, blackberries and poplar (F-B-P), vineyards, corn and annual vegetables. From September 2007 to May 2008, we captured coccinellids in three sticky traps (2.64 m²) placed at the borders between alfalfa fields and adjacent vegetation. We also estimated the abundance of aphid populations in the alfalfa fields, by counting the number of individuals per alfalfa stem in spring, summer and autumn. We collected 90,396 coccinellids from 14 species. Neither total abundance... |

Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is the most destructive fungal disease of potato (Solanum tuberosum) in Argentina, reducing yields considerably. During the 1986-2005 growing seasons, fungicide treatments to control potato late blight were performed using mancozeb (Dithane M80 WP, Dow AgroScience Argentina, 1986-2005) every 7 d, metalaxil+mancozeb (Ridomil MZ 72 WP, Syngenta Agro Argentina, 1986-1995) every 14 d, and mefenoxam+mancozeb (Ridomil Gold 68 WP, 1996-2005) every 7 d. Blight severity was rated five times each season on the basis of the percentage of diseased foliage caused by late blight. Five visual assessments of infection were used to calcúlate the area under the disease-progress curve (AUDPC, foliar blight x day). Marketable (>60 g)... |

The FecB mutation in the BMPR1B gene and the G6, G7 and G8 mutations in the GDF9 gene have been documented in Booroola Merino sheep breeds. These mutations have all been identified in several ovine breeds, such as Belclare, Cambridge. Blackbelly hairy sheep breed, which is well adapted to tropical climates due to its African origin, have 2 to 3 lambs per litter, corresponding to a high prolificacy for a tropical breed. The objective of this investigation was to identify mutations in the cDNA of the BMPR1B and GDF9 genes of 20 Blackbelly ewes selected for their prolificacy (two or more lambs by birth). The results of this study indicate the absence of mutations in these genes from the Blackbelly breed. However, it is important to analyze the 3' end region... |

S. Andrés, J.M. García, and R. Compés. 2013. A scenario for the conversion of Common Agricultural Policy payments in Spain after the 2011 legislative proposals. Cien. Inv. Agr. 40(2):291-306. This paper evaluates the impact of a new model of agricultural policy outlined in legislative proposals issued by the European Commission in October 2011 and estimates its effects on agricultural aid in Spanish Autonomous Communities compared with 2009. Therefore, the OECD agricultural policy-index system was used. To the extent that transversal criteria are applied, which support the transfer of aid between territories, the results suggest that changing the payment assignation model would involve a redistribution of aid towards areas that currently least benefit from... |

Once pesticides reach the soil, there are several factors that affect their soil behavior. To identify the principal soil and herbicide properties that control their adsorption and leaching, a study of five Chilean agricultural and forest soils was performed. Simazine, diuron, terbuthylazine and MCPA were applied to the top of 45-cm tall by 12-cm diameter disturbed soil columns, filled with either an Andisol, Ultisol, Entisol or one of two Inceptisol soils. After herbicide applications, each lysimeter received 24 mm of simulated rain every 24 hours for five days. Once water percolation stopped, the lysimeters were divided into five sections and herbicide concentrations were quantified using High Pressure Liquid Chromatography. Relationships between soil... |

In this study, we conducted an experiment to evaluate the overall effect of novel diets on the growth, metamorphosis and survival of tadpoles of the endangered giant Chilean frog Calyptocephalella gayi (previously known as Caudiverbera caudiverbera) to evaluate the potential of this species for culture and repopulation purposes. Using fishmeal as the main protein source with a substitution of either scallop viscera or Spirulina meal, three treatments were formulated to contain similar amounts of protein and energy. The experiment was run for 75 days, after which the tadpoles showed no significant differences among treatments in terms of their growth or survival. This is the first study to report positive effects of different diets on the growth and... |

Effect of genus and growth stage on the chemical and mineral composition of tropical grasses used to feed dairy cows. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3): 476-485. In tropical production systems, dairy cows are rarely supplemented with minerals, which often lead to mineral imbalances. Grasses grown together in the same soil type and sampled at the same growth stage can vary widely in chemical and mineral composition; therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the chemical and mineral composition of Urochloa spp., Megathyrsus spp., and Andropogon spp. at three different stages of growth in the same soil type. In dryland Mediterranean environments, the productivity of annual legumes is low during autumn and winter, with plant senescence typically beginning by the middle of spring because of low soil water availability. Therefore, the use of deep-rooted perennial legumes may provide an alternative to annual legumes in regions with a soil moisture déficit. We evaluated the germplasm of new perennial legumes with deep rooting systems in two field experiments in the interior drylands of central Chile. In experiment 1, sixteen genotypes of four perennial legume species, nine cultivars (cvs.) of Medicago sativa, two of Hedysarum coronarium, three of Lotus tenuis, and two of Lotus corniculatus were evaluated for three seasons (2012-2014). In experiment 2, eight... |

C. Meriño-Gergichevich, E. Pacheco, and M. Reyes-Díaz. 2016. The effect of foliar boron spraying on the fruit features of Brigitta and Legacy highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) cultivars. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3):452-463. Boron (B) is associated with reproductive and antioxidant metabolism in plants, and in southern Chile, the deficiency of this micronutrient is ameliorated through foliar applications that are a part of agricultural management, thus ensuring the productivity of crops including highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.). However, the appropriate B dosage for this species is unknown, so the aim of this study was to evaluate foliar B application on fruit quality in highbush blueberry in southern Chile. During the 2014-2015 season,... |

This study measured the kinetic parameters of the ruminal degradation of the silage of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. The experiment had a completely randomized design with five treatments and five repetitions; the treatments featured the inclusión of natural brewer’s grain to Marandu grass silage at levels of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%. The regression equation for the degradability of the soluble Fraction A of dry matter showed a linearly increasing pattern (P<0.05) with an addition of 0.19% for each 1% of brewer’s grain included. The percentage of insoluble potentially degradable fraction (B) of dry matter was reduced linearly (P<0.05). The ruminal degradation rate in the dry matter (c), expressed as % h-1, increased linearly... |

Monetary contributions might not be appropriate welfare measures in contingent valuation (CV) when household incomes are very low. In such cases, willingness to pay (WTP) is restricted by a household's ability to reduce its consumption of other goods to pay for the environmental good under valuation. Beneficiaries, however, may be willing to contribute their time to work on a project instead of paying money. In this context, we assess the benefits of ecosystem services restoration in a rural area of high conservation value in central Chile, using a CV study that includes two WTP questions, one for cash and another for labor payments. The results indicate that labor payments in the form of a number of working hours per week were highly accepted among... |
