Dosimetric evaluation in radiation synovectomy BABT
Lima,Carla Flávia de; Campo,Tarcisio Passos Ribeiro de.
Rheumatoid arthritis can manifest itself through synovitis, of which the knee is the common locale. The treatment using an intra-articular radioisotope injection has been applied in various countries. In this work, the dose of radioactive material absorbed in the joint is evaluated, taking into consideration the dose received in the articular cartilage and adjacencies using a three-dimensional voxel model representing the knee. The radioisotopes studied were Samarium-153 and Dysprosium-165. The results show that the synovial membrane receives 85 to 98% of the normalized dose taken from all voxels representative of the synovium. The following features of 153Sm and of 165Dy - its short physical half-life, the gamma emissions with low energy which allow...

Cloning and Characterization of the Gene Encoding 3-hydroxy-3- Methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) Reductase from Fritillaria Cirrhosa D. Don BABT
Zhao,Qi; Li,Rui; Chen,Xiao; Yang,Qian; Li,Jian.
ABSTRACT The enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGR; EC1.1.1.34) catalyzes the first committed step of isoprenoids biosynthesis in Mevalonate (MVA) pathway. Here we report for the first time the cloning and characterization of a full-length cDNA encoding HMGR from Fritillaria cirrhosa (FcHMGR), a bulbous medicinal plant. The full-length cDNA of FcHMGR was 2072 base pair (bp), containing a 1680-bp open reading frame. Bioinformatical analyses revealed that FcHMGR had HMG CoA-binding domains and two NADPH binding domains, which are required for HMGR activity. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed that FcHMGR expressed high in mature bulbs. A truncated version of FcHMGR protein lacking the N-terminal 249-bp GC rich area was...

Morphological discrimination in juveniles of two Selene Species (Teleostei: Carangidae) using truss net distances BABT
Lima Filho,José de Melo; Lessa,Rosângela; Stosic,Borko; Duarte Neto,Paulo José; Vieira,José Wilson.
External morphological distinction between young Selene vomer and S. brownii (Carangidae) was studied using multivariate analysis with the purpose to evaluate if other characters than the second dorsal and pelvic fin spines could be used as distinguishing attributes for juveniles fishes. These spines are important distinctive morphological characters, but they can be absent in juvenile fishes or be broken during manipulation. A sample of 389 specimens was collected from beach netting at Caiçara do Norte (RN), northeastern Brazil, in 2001. Each specimen was digitalized and their images provided numerical matrices using Scion Image and FANTOMAS software. A C-language program was developed and used to calculate 16 Euclidean distances and nine homologous...

Mutation breeding of lipase-producing strain Flavobacterium sp. by supercritical CO2 with hydrazine hydrate BABT
Zhang,Qiaoyan; Qian,Junqing; Ma,Lingzhi.
This work aimed to obtain an ideal mutant strain with higher lipase yield using hydrazine hydrate (HZH) as a novel additive to treat Flavobacterium sp. strain YY25 by supercritical CO2. The survival rate and the positive mutation rate of the tested strain were strongly dependent on the dose of HZH. The treatment by 0.5% HZH in supercritical CO2 (8 MPa, 35°C) for 30 min provided 58.3% of positive mutation rate and an expected mutant strain with about 76.7% increase in lipase yield compared with the wild strain. Possible mutagenesis mechanisms were further explored. The analysis on pH drop of the treated seed liquid was performed to better understand the interaction. Results proved that the induced mutation with enhanced yield of lipase could be achieved by...

Mortality of Kalliapseudes schubartii in unvegetated soft bottoms of the estuarine region of the Lagoa dos Patos BABT
Fonseca,Duane Barros; D'Incao,Fernando.
Studies were carried iut on seasonal mortality by taking samples of Kalliapseudes schubartii (Crustacea: Tanaidacea) for a year in the estuarine region of the Lagoa dos Patos (southern Brazil). Results demonstrated no significant difference in seasonal mortality rates, which suggest that populations of K. schubartii was heavily preyed on year round and that an assumption of a significantly higher mortality in summer/autumn than in spring/winter might not be held in unvegetated soft bottoms of the estuarine regions of the Lagoa dos Patos.

Liming and postharvest quality of carambola fruits BABT
Prado,Renato de Mello; Natale,William; Corrêa,Márcio Cleber de Medeiros; Silva,José Antônio Alberto da.
To determine the effects of lime application on the postharvest quality of carambola fruit, an experiment with carambola trees cultivated on an acid soil was conducted at the Bebedouro, São Paulo, Brazil. The trees were treated with increasing doses of lime during the pre-planting period. Liming led to a increase in calcium concentration of carambola leaves and fruits. Adequate nutrition of the plant with calcium improved post-harvest fruit quality, permitting a longer (~ 2 days) period of storage under ambient conditions.

Interference of some organic substances and microorganisms adhered to stainless steel in ATP-bioluminescence measurement BABT
Simm,Erny Marcelo; Andrade,Nélio José de; Mendonça,Regina Célia Santos; Passos,Frederico José Vieira; Chaves,José Benício Paes.
Adhesion of organic substances and microorganisms on stainless steel surface was evaluated. The log RLU measurement was affected at a lower or higher degree, by type or concentration of the organic substances (casein, lipid, sucrose and their combinations) adhered to surface. However, if the samples analyzed were from the food processing surfaces, they would have been considered to be under satisfactory hygienic conditions with log RLU < 2.18 (< 150 RLU). The log RLU measurements of Staphylococcus carnosus-adhered surfaces, combined with or without the organic substances, were higher (p<0.05) than those of the Bacillus subtilis spores-adhered surface, regardless of the concentration. The samples taken from the surfaces adhered with the casein,...

The occurrence of aflatoxin B1 contamination in peanuts and peanut products marketed in southern Brazil BABT
Hoeltz,Michele; Einloft,Tiago Centeno; Oldoni,Verônica Possebon; Dottori,Horacio Alberto; Noll,Isa Beatriz.
This study investigated the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 in peanuts and peanut products marketed in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. One hundred one samples of peanuts and peanut products were collected and analyzed by thin-layer chromatography with a charge-coupled device system. Aflatoxin B1 was present in 14% of the samples analyzed, in concentrations ranging from 24.0 to 87.5 µg/kg in the peanut samples and from 22.0 to 84.6 µg/kg in the peanut-product samples. These values exceeded the Brazilian regulatory limit (20.0 µg/Kg for aflatoxins B1+G1+B2+G2 ). These results suggest that although aflatoxin contamination in peanuts marketed in southern Brazil is lower than in other Brazilian regions, it is still a serious problem for human health and the...

Impact of biocatalyst and moisture content on toluene/xylene mixture biofiltration BABT
Klapková,Eva; Halecký,Martin; Fitch,Mark; Soccol,Carlos Riccardo; Paca,Jan.
The objective of this work was to determine the influence of microbial inoculation on degradation efficiency. Three biofilters were used for the treatment of waste gas. A mixture of compost and perlite (8:2) served as the packing material. One biofilter was inoculated with a constructed microbial population. The second remained uninoculated, having the natural population present in the compost. The third biofilter was uninoculated and the packing material was sterilized. The degradation ability of the uninoculated biofilter started to drop after 18 days, while the removal efficiency of inoculated biofilter was stable. The sterile biofilter proved to have no removal efficiency. Moisture content of the packing and ability of the packing to keep moisture was...

Biogas and Biomass Implementation in Rural Areas BABT
Sandim,Álvaro A.; Batista,Alexandre G.; Bareta,Maria Luiza E.; Betini,Roberto C.; Pepplow,Luiz Amilton.
Abstract Advances in energy demand in rural areas cannot be dissociated from agricultural modernization, large estates, mechanization of labor and reduced investment in small production. The use of biogas together with biomass are the most cost-effective ways for the small producer, as it has a high calorific value. In the case of biogas the procedure is performed by combining a compressor and a chiller, allowing the gas enter the reactor and burn together with the air stream. The use of these techniques is an auxiliary way to reduce the cost of the producer to produce a certain crop, besides allowing a participation in the final energy supply, so that the utilities have an alternative to distribute the surplus energy to another region, serving thus a...

Lymphoscintigraphy in breast cancer: a short review about the impact on upper limb after surgical treatment BABT
Bergmann,Anke; Resende,Juliana Miranda Dutra de; Santos-Filho,Sebastião David; Bello,Marcelo Adeodato; Oliveira,Juliana Flavia de; Palestro,Christopher J.; Bernardo-Filho,Mario.
Breast cancer is still associated with high mortality rates and one of the most important factors governing long survival is accurate and early diagnosis. In underdeveloped countries, this disease frequently is only detected in advanced stages; however, through mammography, many women have been diagnosed at early stages. In this context, the sentinel lymph node (SLN) technique is associated with less postoperative morbidity compared to axillary lymphadenectomy. Lymphoscintigraphy has emerged as a method for the evaluation of lymphatic drainage chains in various tumours, being both accurate and non invasive. The aim of this work is to present the main aspects which cause controversy about SLN and lymphoscintigraphy and the impact that these procedures have...

Molecular And 3D-Structural Characterization Of Fructose-1,6-Bisphosphate Aldolase Derived From Metroxylon Sagu BABT
Roslan,Hairul Azman; Hossain,Md. Anowar; Gerunsin,Jerry.
ABSTRACT Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBAld) is an enzyme that catalyzes the cleavage of D-fructose-1,6-phosphate (FBP) to D-glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) and dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP), and plays vital role in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. However, molecular characterization and functional roles of FBAld remain unknown in sago palm. Here we report a modified CTAB-RNA extraction method was developed for the isolation of good quality RNA (RIN>8) from sago leaves and the isolation of FBAld cDNA from sago palm. The isolated sago FBAld (msFBAld) cDNA has total length of 1288 bp with an open reading frame of 1020 bp and a predicted to encode for a protein of 340 amino acid resides. The predicted protein shared a high degree of homology...

Genetic diversity among Brazilian soybean cultivars based on SSR loci and pedigree data BABT
Priolli,Regina Helena Geribello; Pinheiro,José Baldin; Zucchi,Maria Imaculada; Bajay,Miklos Maximiliano; Vello,Natal Antonio.
In this study, simple sequence repeats (SSR) loci and pedigree data were used to investigate the genetic relationship in a group of 168 Brazilian soybean cultivars. Eighteen SSR loci produced an average of 5.06 alleles and a mean gene diversity of 0.58 for the cultivars studied. Genetic distance (GD) was determined using the modified Roger's Wright distance, and a final dendrogram was in agreement with the cultivar pedigree. A distance matrix based on the coefficient of parentage scores was also generated for the cultivars, which ranged from 0 to 1, with a mean of 0.18, whereas SSR-based genetic similarity (1- GD) ranged from 0.01 to 0.90, with a mean of 0.25. Mantel's Z test showed that the similarity matrices generated from both the data sets were low,...
