The Interplay of Regulation and Marketing Incentives in Providing Food Safety AgEcon
Ollinger, Michael; Moore, Danna L..
This report examines the impact of process regulations mandated under the Pathogen Reduction/Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (PR/HACCP) rule by the Food Safety and Inspection Service of USDA on food safety process control. The current level of food safety found in U.S. meat and poultry food products is a result of process and performance regulations and management-determined actions brought about by market incentives. Processing regulations include sanitation and other tasks related to food safety; management-determined actions include capital investment and other actions independent of process regulations, but possibly driven by performance standards. Performance standards—regulations that allow manufacturers to reach an acceptable level of...

Analysis of Consumer Attitudes and Consumers’ Willingness to Pay for Functional Foods AgEcon
Di Pasquale, Jorgelina; Adinolfi, Felice; Capitanio, Fabian.
The objective of this study is to analyze consumer behaviour in relation to functional foods by a direct survey. To this end, the proposal is an analysis of the reasons for choosing to consume this type of food or not, accompanied by a supplementary investigation, mostly to assess the relationship between consumption patterns and willingness to pay (WTP) for the most common categories of functional foods, such as milk fortified with CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Our research shows that a proportion of the population is unaware of the existence of functional foods and their properties. Moreover, it shows that when the concept of functional foods is explained to consumers, this creates a greater willingness to pay for such food, which is strongly linked to...

CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS AND AGRICULTURAL SECTOR. ANY PERSPECTIVE FOR AN EUROPEAN RISK MANAGEMENT POLICY? AgEcon
Cucuzza, Giuseppe.
The struggle against climate change represents one of the ‘new challenges’ which agriculture will have to face in the immediate future. The “Health Check” of the Common Agricultural Policy together with questions about the efficacy and simplification of the direct aid system and the adaptation of support tools for the European Union market, give climate change a central role in the relationship between agriculture and the environment, in that they are considered likely to affect the chances of success in terms of bioenergy increase and a more efficient management of hydro resources (Com 2007/722 fin). Agriculture being subject to the effects generated by climate change should identify and develop solutions that will favour the adaptation of cultivation...

Agricultural efficiency, malaria incidence and health expenses among Ugandan farmers AgEcon
Ulimwengu, John M.; Badiane, Ousmane.
The importance of health in promoting economic development has been forcefully stated by the World Health Organization’s Commission on Macroeconomics and Health. In this paper, we look at the impact of own household health expenses on malaria incidence and ultimately on agricultural efficiency. We use a non-parametric method to estimate agricultural efficiency, therefore avoiding the issue of identification of the proper household agricultural production function. In addition the simar-wilson approach followed in this paper accounts for bias induced by serial correlation among farmers. A Tobit model with endogenous health production function is used to estimate the impact of malaria incidence on agricultural efficiency. Data come from the 2006 National...

A Study on the Extent of Adoption of Various Recommended Technologies in Wheat Cultivation in Punjab AgEcon
Singh, Mandeep; Chahal, S.S..
The extent of adoption of various recommended production technologies and returns from wheat crop in Punjab have been studied for the years 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09. The results reveal that the area under recommended varieties of wheat has decreased from 95.29 per cent in 2006-07 to 90.63 per cent in 2008-09. At the same time, it has been observed that a majority of the sample farmers grow wheat at recommended time by using recommended quantity of seed per acre. Although the percentage of farmers who treat the seed before sowing wheat crop has increased from 27.81 per cent in 2006-07 to 39.00 per cent in 2008-09, still a majority of the farmers do not follow this technology. It has been advocated by the PAU that zero tillage of wheat can save up to Rs...

Maize Revolutions in Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon
Smale, Melinda; Byerlee, Derek R.; Jayne, Thomas S..
There have been numerous episodes of widespread adoption of improved seed and long-term achievements in the development of the maize seed industry in Sub-Saharan Africa. This summary takes a circumspect view of technical change in maize production. Adoption of improved seed has continued to rise gradually, now representing an estimated 44 percent of maize area in Eastern and Southern Africa (outside South Africa), and 60 percent of maize area in West and Central Africa. Use of fertilizer and restorative crop management practices remains relatively low and inefficient. An array of extension models has been tested and a combination of approaches will be needed to reach maize producers in heterogeneous agricultural environments. Yield growth overall has been...

Which biofuel market does the ethanol tariff protect? Implications for social welfare and GHG emissions AgEcon
Crago, Christine Lasco; Khanna, Madhu.
The ethanol tariff is one of the instruments used by the government to encourage domestic ethanol production. Existing literature analyzing the market and welfare effects of the US ethanol tariff has concluded that removing the tariff would increase social surplus and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, due to the replacement of corn ethanol with lower cost and lower GHG intensive sugarcane ethanol. This paper re-examines these findings in the presence of a domestic cellulosic ethanol industry. The current RFS mandate requires 21 billion gallons of advanced biofuel, a portion of which could be met by any non-starch based biofuel that reduces emissions by at least 50% compared to an energy equivalent amount of gasoline. Sugarcane ethanol has been...

Local and Sustainable Food Supply: The Role of European Retail Consumer Co-operatives AgEcon
Hingley, Martin; Mikkola, Minna; Canavari, Maurizio; Asioli, Daniele.
This paper investigates the rationale for local and sustainable food systems and retailer co-operatives as their entry points within local conditions. Emphasis is on localised food networks and connection between socially as well as environmentally sustainable production, distribution and consumption. Investigated is the premise that co-operative organisational structures, for reasons of their long-term socially responsible origins are at the forefront of development of local and sustainable food systems and are thereby in a position to offer a specific contribution to market development. Two key research questions are proposed: Firstly, is there a pre-determination of co-operatives to issues of sustainable and local food sourcing given the historical and...

Are Consumers Willing to Pay More for Biodegradable Containers Than for Plastic Ones? Evidence from Hypothetical Conjoint Analysis and Nonhypothetical Experimental Auctions AgEcon
Yue, Chengyan; Hall, Charles R.; Behe, Bridget K.; Campbell, Benjamin L.; Dennis, Jennifer H.; Lopez, Roberto G..
This study used and compared hypothetical conjoint analysis and nonhypothetical experimental auctions to elicit floral customers’ willingness to pay for biodegradable plant containers. The results of the study show that participants were willing to pay a price premium for biodegradable containers, but the premium is not the same for different types of containers. This article also shows the mixed ordered probit model generates more accurate results when analyzing the conjoint analysis Internet survey data than the ordered probit model.

Estimating the Carbon Footprint of Florida Orange Juice AgEcon
Spreen, Thomas H.; Dwivedi, Puneet; Goodrich-Schneider, Renee.
This study is a part of a comprehensive study which attempts to create a baseline of global warming impact (expressed in total greenhouse gas emission and measured in terms of carbon equivalent) associated with the production and consumption of a gallon of orange juice available in the form of NFC (Not from Concentrate) and FCOJ (Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice) in Florida. A detailed life‐cycle approach is adopted and greenhouse gas emissions of all the steps in the supply chain starting from citrus nursery management to the point where customer purchases juice from a food store are considered. This study reports total greenhouse gas emission related with the management of an acre orange grove under the two scenarios of with and without resetting of...

Le tourisme enogastronomique et le système agroalimentaire de la Province de Parme: le réseau des “ Musei del Cibo ” (Musées du Goût) AgEcon
Mozzoni, I..

A META-ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY IN NIGERIAN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Ogundari, Kolawole.
This study sheds light on how study specific-characteristics impact mean technical efficiency (MTE) in Nigerian agriculture. Also the paper extracts consensus message about MTE and its drivers in Nigerian agriculture based on studies covering the period 1999-2008. A meta-analysis using truncated regression was employed on a total of sixty four studies which yield eighty six observations for the econometric analysis. The regression results show that MTE in Nigerian agriculture increased significantly over the years. Study specific-characteristics such as sample size, number of inputs used as well as studies with focus on crop and livestock production were found to significantly impact MTE. Further analyses show that studies in the Northcentral, Southwest,...

Decoupling EU Farm Support: Does the New Single Payment Scheme Fit within the Green Box? AgEcon
Swinbank, Alan; Tranter, Richard B..
Recent reform of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has led to a further decoupling of farm support. The EU believes that the new Single Payment Scheme, which replaces the former system of area and headage payments to farmers, tied to production, will qualify for green-box status in the WTO. We examine this contention, particularly in light of the recent WTO panel report on upland cotton.

Public and Private Institutional Responses to Advocacy Attacks: The Case of the Global Cocoa Industry and Child Labour Abuse AgEcon
Clark, Alexandra; Gow, Hamish R..
Over the past decade the global agri-food industry has come under increasing attack by advocacy groups related to their production and marketing processes (Bowmar and Gow, 2009). Advocacy groups have used these attacks to exploit the growing intergenerational disconnect between consumers and farming to campaign for narrowly defined political ideals while challenging traditional agricultural practices (Olin, 1999). This disconnect has provided advocacy groups the opportunity to use boycotts and other media attacks to severely adverse impact not only branded manufacturers and retailers, but their farmer suppliers. The agri-food industry’s challenge is to understand how to develop appropriate individual and collective responses to these attacks that minimize...

Geographic Differences in the Relative Price of Healthy Foods AgEcon
Todd, Jessica E.; Leibtag, Ephraim S.; Penberthy, Corttney.
Although healthy foods can be affordable, if less healthy foods are cheaper, individuals may have an economic incentive to consume a less healthful diet. Using the Quarterly Food-at-Home Price Database, we explore whether a select set of healthy foods (whole grains, dark green vegetables, orange vegetables, whole fruit, skim and 1% milk, fruit juice, and bottled water) are more expensive than less healthy alternatives. We find that not all healthy foods are more expensive than less healthy alternatives; skim and 1% milk are less expensive than whole and 2% milk and bottled water is generally less expensive than carbonated nonalcoholic drinks. We also find considerable geographic variation in the relative price of healthy foods. This price variation may...
