Seventy seamounts 50 to 100 km off South East Cape, southern Tasmania, rise from depths of 1000- 2000 m on the Australian continental slope. Sampling of the slopes of 14 seamounts was undertaken in 1997 by the Australian Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The collection yielded 14 species of hydroids, six of which are new, including two species of a new genus. Only Halecium fragile Hodgson, 1950, and Tripoma arboreum Hirohito, 1995, have previously been recorded from Tasmania. Other species are known from deep water off New Zealand, Japan and the south-western Atlantic. |

The genus Vermisporium presently accommodates 13 species, 11 of which are associated with leaf spots of eucalypts in the Southern Hemisphere. Vermisporium is chiefly distinguished from Seimatosporium (Amphisphaeriaceae) on the basis of a short exogenous basal appendage, and the absence of a recognisable apical appendage. Due to the increasing importance of these species in native forests, and confusion pertaining to their taxonomy, a revision of the genus was undertaken based on fresh collections and dried herbarium specimens. Results from DNA sequence data analyses of the nrDNA-ITS and 28S nrRNA genes for species of Vermisporium indicated the genus to be a synonym of Seimatosporium. New combinations are introduced in Seimatosporium for several species: S.... |

Alangium sect. Rhytidandra is confined to SE Asia, the Pacific and East Australia, and contains 13 species. Five species, viz. Alangium brassii, A. glabrum, A. gracile, A. guadalcanalense, and A. velutinum are described as new, whereas A. villosum subsp. solomonense is raised to specific rank: A. solomonense. Subspecies tomentosum formerly in A. villosum is transferred to another species and has become A. polyosmoides subsp. tomentosum. Finally Iodes ferruginea, described in Icacinaceae appeared to belong in Alangiaceae, and as the name ferruginea was occupied in Alangium it is changed into A. strigosum, nom. nov. A key to the species is presented, and the concerned taxa are enumerated, referenced, described, and two are figured. |

The genus Alyxia is revised for Australia and the islands of the Pacific Ocean as the second and final part of a complete revision of the genus. 39 species are recognised for this area of which three are new to science, two are new combinations and one is a new name. 14 species are found in Australia and its offshore territories, 21 species in New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands, and seven species in the other islands of the Pacific. There is relatively little overlap between regions: two species are found in Malesia and Australia; one species is found in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands; one species in Vanuatu and New Caledonia; and A. stellata is found in Australia, New Caledonia and into the Pacific as far as Hawaii and Henderson Island. Molecular evidence shows the Old World genus Ryssopterys (Malpighiaceae) nested within the New World genus Stigmaphyllon; therefore, Ryssopterys is here transferred to Stigmaphyllon as subg. Ryssopterys. The subgenera share most vegetative and fruit characters. Subgenus Stigmaphyllon comprises 92 species characterized by hermaphrodite, bilaterally symmetrical flowers. Subgenus Ryssopterys includes 21 species that appear androdioecious but are probably functionally dioecious; the flowers are either hermaphrodite but likely functionally female, owing to inaperturate pollen, or male with a rudimentary gynoecium. All species have radially symmetrical flowers in which all parts of each floral whorl are equal; they lack calyx glands as well as the stylar... |

A revision is presented of six sections of the genus Bulbophyllum (Orchidaceae): sect. Adelopetalum (mainly occurring in Australia), sect. Lepanthanthe, sect. Macrouris, sect. Pelma, sect. Peltopus, and sect. Uncifera (all mainly occurring in New Guinea). Together these include 110 species and 9 subspecies. Fortyseven species and 4 subspecies are new; they are either described in this revision or in precursors to this revision. The genus Dactylorhynchus is reduced to Bulbophyllum. Keys to the species, as well as synonymy, descriptions and illustrations of each species are provided. Some aspects of the morphology of the plants are discussed. A cladistic analysis of each revised section is given. A method to select the closest outgroup species from a number... |

A new species of scyllarid lobster, Ibacus chacei, from eastern Australia is described and illustrated. The new species can be distinguished from all other known Ibacus species by the shape of the third maxilliped. Ibacus brevipes Bate, 1888 is recorded from Australia for the first time. Seven out of the eight known species of Ibacus are now recorded from Australia. Colour descriptions, and updated distributions for all Australian Ibacus species are included, plus further comments on the type locality of Ibacus peronii Leach, 1815. Colour illustrations and a key to the eight known species of Ibacus are also provided. |

Three new ostracod genera: Humphreyscandona n. gen., Pilbaracandona n. gen., and Notacandona n. gen., and nine new species are described from subterranean waters of the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. They belong to the subfamily Candoninae of the order Podocopida, and are characterized by a 5-segmented antennula and ornamented carapace. Humphreyscandona n. gen. contains five species, all with reduced posterior furcal claw and prominent external lobe on hemipenis. The other new genera each contain two species. Pilbaracandona n. gen. is also characterized by a reduced posterior furcal claw, but can be separated from the previous genus by the chaetotaxy of the antennula, mandibula, and general appearance of the hemipenis. Notacandona n. gen. is separated... |

A taxonomic revision of the Austro-Malesian species of Miliusa Lesch. ex A.DC. (Annonaceae) is presented. Ten species can be recognised in the area, including one new species, Miliusa novoguineensis, described here. Most species are restricted to certain islands or geographic areas. Miliusa horsfieldii (Benn.) Pierre is the main exception as it is distributed from Hainan up to Queensland, Australia. Six of the ten species (except M. amplexicaulis Ridl., M. longipes King, M. macropoda Miq. and M. parviflora Ridl.) have a deciduous habit, and are largely restricted to areas with a monsoon climate. A key, based primarily on generative characters, and descriptions to the species are included. |

Comparison of Sollasella digitata Lendenfeld, 1888, up until the present assigned to its own family Sollasellidae Lendenfeld, 1887 in the order Hadromerida, and Raspailopsis cervicornis Burton, 1959, assigned to Raspailiidae Nardo, 1833 in the order Poecilosclerida, leads to the conclusion that both should be considered congeneric and are best assigned to a single genus Sollasella. This conclusion is based on examination of habit and skeletal characters of the type material of S. digitata and both type and freshly collected material of S. cervicornis. The conclusion is strengthened by the discovery of a new species, Sollasella moretonensis n.sp. collected in North Australia (primarily in the northeastern coast, but also an isolated record from the... |

Two monocelid species with simplex copulatory bulbs and postpharyngeal ovaries have been found in E. Australia. One of them presents a combination of characters not found in any of the known genera of the Monocelididae, and the new genus Acanthopseudomonocelis is proposed for it. The new genus is characterized by the presence of four stylet-bearing accessory organs and by an internal vagina; it is related to Pseudomonocelis. The other species, Pseudomonocelis schockaerti n. sp., is characterized by a complex bursa-vagina system, and by a highly muscular penial organ and male antrum. It is closely related to P. pardii Schockaert & Martens, 1987, from Somaliland. Two possibly additional species of the genus Pseudomonocelis, not found in a mature stage,... |
