Novel approach to the selection of Psidium guajava genotypes using latent traits to bypass multicollinearity 63
Silva,Flavia Alves da; Correa,Caio Cezar Guedes; Carvalho,Beatriz Murizini; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Preisigke,Sandra da Costa; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira do.
ABSTRACT: Multicollinearity is a very common problem in studies that employ path analysis in agronomic crops, which generates unrealistic results and erroneous interpretations. This study was aimed at assessing the path analysis in data obtained from guava tree full-sib based on modelling multiple regressions applying latent variables to neutralize the effects of multicollinearity. Seven explanatory variables were measured – fruit mass (FM), fruit length (FL), fruit diameter (FD), mesocarp thickness (MT), peel thickness (PT), pulp mass (PM), total number of fruits (NTF) –, plus the main dependent variable, total yield per plant (YIELD). In accordance with the multicollinearity scenario, eleven values were tested with the addition of the constant K to the...

Silveira,Solange Ferreira da Silveira; Hawerroth,Maraisa Crestani; Oliveira,Danyela de Cássia da Silva; Woyann,Leomar Guilherme; Almeida,Helaine Claire Ferreira de; Luz,Viviane Kopp da; Thurow,Liamara; Silva,Raíssa Martins da; Gutkoski,Luiz Carlos; Maia,Luciano Carlos da; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
ABSTRACT Improvement of quality-related traits of grains is a constant concern in white oat breeding programs, which challenges breeders to understand their dynamics. The performance of different genetic combinations must be thoroughly evaluated to make high nutritional quality cultivars available. This study aimed to estimate the heterosis on F1 and F2 generations, vigor loss, due to inbreeding, and correlation between the grain chemical components to understand the dynamics of these traits, considering two segregating oat progenies. The populations Albasul × UPF 15 (population 1) and IAC 7 × UFRGS 19 (population 2) were developed. Both populations showed transgressive segregant individuals. The combination Albasul × UPF 15 provided significant heterosis...

Nipattha Chatsuwan; Varipat Areekul.
Anthocyanin, total polyphenol content and antioxidant activities of fifty-one Thai rice cultivars were investigated. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using three different assays; ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothi azoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) radical cation and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. The total polyphenol content (TPC) and anthocyanin content varied significantly and ranged from 0.194-8.702 and 0.001– 6.676 mg/g (dry wt), respectively. The extracts from pigmented rice exhibited higher TPC, anthocyanin content and antioxidant activities than did the non-pigmented varieties. Among them, glutinous dark rice (GDR) had the highest levels of TPC and anthocyanin content...

Estrutura populacional de Hyale media (Dana) (Amphipoda, Gammaridea, Hyalidae), habitante dos fitais de Caiobá, Matinhos, Paraná, Brasil 104
Dubiaski-Silva,Janete; Masunari,Setuko.
A study of correlation between the total body length and the somites length was carried out in a population of Hyale media (Dana, 1857), in order to know which somite or group of somites has the highest correlation index with the total body length. As the sum of the length of the first to fourth pereonites showed the highest linear correlation index (Y=0.0764+0.2736X; r=0.9723), this meristic parameter was chosen to describe the population structure of the species. The following aspects were treated: distribution of the body size classes in the various phytals, population composition, seasonal fluctuation of population density. relative frequency of the ovigerous females and correlation between the body length and the number of eggs inside the marsupium of...

Exploring TM image texture and its relationships with biomass estimation in Rondônia, Brazilian Amazon 36
Lu,Dengsheng; Batistella,Mateus.
Many texture measures have been developed and used for improving land-cover classification accuracy, but rarely has research examined the role of textures in improving the performance of aboveground biomass estimations. The relationship between texture and biomass is poorly understood. This paper used Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data to explore relationships between TM image textures and aboveground biomass in Rondônia, Brazilian Amazon. Eight grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) based texture measures (i.e., mean, variance, homogeneity, contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, second moment, and correlation), associated with seven different window sizes (5x5, 7x7, 9x9, 11x11, 15x15, 19x19, and 25x25), and five TM bands (TM 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7) were analyzed....

Genetic parameters, path analysis and indirect selection of agronomic traits of cassava germplasm 42
DINIZ,RAFAEL P.; OLIVEIRA,EDER J. DE.
Abstract: This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters and correlations between morphological, agronomic and root quality traits of cassava plants, as well as to study cause and effect relationships through path analysis. A total of 814 genotypes were evaluated from 2011 to 2015. The joint analysis of the data was performed by the mixed models approach. The predicted genetic values of the genotypes were used to estimate the genetic correlations among as well the path analysis. The estimates of heritability of the genotype means ranged from 0.31 (commercial fresh root yield – CRY) to 0.62 (plant height - PLH). The highest genetic correlation coefficient estimates were observed for starch yield (STY) × total fresh root yield (FRY) (0.97). The results of...

Correlating mesophilic counts to the pseudo-CMP content of raw milk 45
Raymundo,N.K.L.; Daguer,H.; Osaki,S.C.; Bersot,L.S..

Identification of informative performance traits in swine using principal component analysis 45
Barbosa,L.; Lopes,P.S.; Regazzi,A.J.; Guimarães,S.E.F.; Torres,R.A..
Using principal component analysis, records of 435 animals from an F2 swine population were used to identity independent and informative variables of economically important performance. The following performance traits were recorded: litter size at birth (BL), litter size at weaning (WL), teat number (TN), birth weight (BW), weight at 21 (W21), 42 (W42), 63 (W63) and 77 (W77) days of age, average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (FI) and feed:gain ratio (FGR) from 77 to 105 days of age. Six principal components expressed variation lower than 0.7 (eigen values lower than 0.7) suggesting that six variables could be discarded with little information loss. The discarded variables present significant simple linear correlation with the retained variables. Retaining...

Lu,Jian-xia; Lu,Zhong-qian; Zhang,Shao-lan; Zhi,Juan; Chen,Zheng-ping; Wang,Wan-xiang.
Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the promoter region ofinterleukin-18 (IL-18), an inflammatory cytokine, have been linked to susceptibility to many diseases, including cancer and immune dysfunction. Here, we explored the potential association between theIL-18 -607C/A (rs1946518) promoter region polymorphism and susceptibility to ischemic stroke (IS). This locus was amplified from peripheral blood samples of 386 IS patients (cases) and 364 healthy individuals (controls) by the polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers. Significant differences were observed by the χ2 test in the -607C/A (rs1946518) genotype and allele frequencies between cases and controls (P < 0.05). Furthermore, after excluding for age, gender, smoking status, and...

Impact of climate change on oil fatty acid composition of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in three market classes 117
Onemli,Fadul.
Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is one of the most important oilseed crops of the world. The fatty acid composition plays an important role in oil quality. Experiments were performed to examine the variation in oil fatty acids of three normal oleic peanut market types (Virginia, Valencia, and Spanish) in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Variations of botanical variety, year and their interaction were highly significant for oil content and all 13 fatty acids studied. Oil content in different peanut market types exhibited significant differences. The maximum oil content (51.993%) was found in Virginia (NC-7), while Valencia (New Mexico Valencia A) accumulated the minimum oil content (47.197%). Virginia had also the highest oleic acid percentage. Higher temperatures during...

Double purpose wheat: correlation analysis of forage yield components 118
Morant,Alicia; Merchán,Héctor; Lutz,Eugenio.
The direct and relative contribution of characters associated with forage production were evaluated in a comparative assay of wheat cultivars to contribute to an ideotype defnition when selecting double purpose material for forage and grain production. Simple correlations for all of the possible combinations among the measured variables were calculated. The correlation partition method, known as path coeffcient, was applied to determine the causes of this association and to measure the relative importance of each factor. Forage production during the vegetative period was measured for each variety at the dates in which the apex reached the double ridge state (3 - 4 in the Nerson scale). The double ridge state was considered the deadline of the vegetative...
