A novel formulation of potassium bicarbonate (Armicarb) was evaluated in 2004 and 2005 as agent against apple scab (3 field trials) and sooty blotch (2 field trials). Armicarb controlled scab equally well as the reference treatments sulphur and copper. Armicarb showed also excellent activity against sooty blotch. However, potential side-effects such as lenticell spot development need further investigation. At present, potassium bicarbonate is considered by the Swiss registration authorities as non-toxic to humans and in consequence, no residue levels have been specified. Armicarb has very interesting properties as a plant protection agent and its composition and risk profile are expected to fulfil the IFOAM standards for acceptance of novel plant... |

Flavescence dorée and the mandatory control of its vector Scaphoideus titanus pose important problems in organic vineyards. The goal of our field studies conducted in the Ticino was to develop a pest control strategy conform to the guidelines of organic production. Insecticides containing pyrethrin were the only organic products showing an efficacy higher than 90% against the immature stages of S. titanus. However, these products had no effect on adult leafhoppers. Repeated applications of pyrethrin proved to be toxic against the predatory mite species Amblyseius andersoni. Despite this toxicity, the only efficient and recommended control strategy in organic vineyards is their application. Pyrethrin should be applied three times at an interval of... |

Plasmopara viticola, the causai agent of grapevine downy mildew is very well adapted to its host pianI. Therefore it is very difficult to develop methods for the biological control which meet the requests of ecological viticulture. One of the possibilities for a biological control of grapevine downy mildew is the usage of the natural resistance potential of the European cultivars of Vitis vinifera, more exactly the induced resistance. Another way is the use of specific inhibitors which either stop the infection process or have an effect on the interaction of the pathogen with the host pianI. Whereas generai information about the resistance reactions in plants is available and the first results were also won for vine, the knowledge about inhibitors is very... |

Besides other legumes lupins belong to the local protein crops usuable as feeding stuff in ecologic farming. Therefore an important breeding aim is to provide lupins with high and stable protein content. A non-destructive analysis using near infrared transmittance spectroscopy was developed for determination of protein in single seeds of lupins. Calibration and validation equations were calculated on the basis of 300 single seeds of 3 blue lupins (‘Azuro’, ‘Bolivio’, ‘Boregine’) growing at 3 ecological locations. The estimation of protein content was possible in a range of 15-44% protein with a coefficient of determination (r²) of 0,907 and a standard error of prediction (SEP) of 1,86%. The equation was applied to evaluate the protein content of single... |

We have examined the effect of Pen, an aqueous extract of the dry mycelium of Penicillium chrysogenum, on plant–pathogen interactions. Pen controlled a broad range of pathogens on several crop plants under greenhouse and field conditions. Pen protected grapevine from downy and powdery mildew (caused by Plasmopara viticola and Uncinula necator), tomato from early blight (caused by Phytophthora infestans), onion from downy mildew (Peronospora destructor) and apple trees from apple scab (caused by Venturia inaequalis) to a similar extent as fungicides such as copper and sulphur or well-known inducers such as benzothiadiazole or b-aminobutyric acid. Pen had no major direct fungicidal effect and is thus supposed to protect plants by activating their defense... |

The impact of seed borne diseases on organic cereal production in North-Western Europe is discussed as well as the potential of the possible control measures. It is concluded that it is essential for the organic seed production to put more focus on the control the seed borne diseases. Possible control measures exist, but only a few are used at present. Small seeds are statistically more infected by a number of seed borne diseases than larger seeds. Removal of these seeds by size and gravity separation could be used more frequently. Varieties resistant to the most significant seed borne diseases are available, and improved heat treatment techniques are being developed and are likely to be available for practice in the coming years. Some organic certifying... |

Potato blight Phytophora infestans is a major limiting factor on potato production and is a particular problem for organic growers in Wales. The use of blight resistant varieties is an important strategy in the management of late blight. Hungarian Sárpo varieties appear to have greater late-blight resistance than any currently available to Welsh growers. In 2004, ADAS Pwllpeiran undertook field trials of 19 Sárpo varieties provided by the Sárvári Research Trust, with the following objectives: |

Seed-borne net blotch is a threat to organic barley seed production in Denmark because it often exceeds the recommended 15% contamination threshold in barley seed lots. This threatens the supply of organic barley growers with organically produced healthy barley seeds. The ORGSEED project aims at quantifying the links between initial seed contamination, primary seedling infection, disease severity during the growing season, yield parameters and new contamination of the harvested grains to improve decision support for handling net blotch contaminations in organic barley- and barley seed production. The harvested grains of spring barley varieties grown at several sites in Denmark in 2002 and 2003 were used as seed lots in subsequent trials in 2003 and 2004.... |

The effect of organic, low-input and conventional management practices on barley yield and disease incidence was assessed in field trials over two years. Conventional fertility management (based on mineral fertiliser applications) and conventional crop protection (based on chemosynthetic pesticides) significantly increased the yield of winter barley as compared to organic fertility and crop protection regimes. Severity of leaf blotch (Rhynchosporium secalis) was highest under organic fertility and crop protection management and was correlated inversely with yield. For mildew (Erysiphe graminis), an interaction between fertility management and crop protection was detected. Conventional crop protection reduced severity of the disease, only under conventional... |
