| ABSTRACT Neotropical hawk-eagles (Spizaetus spp.) are large forest raptors, having low population densities and high sensitivity to human disturbance. The three species of Brazil’s Atlantic forest (S. ornatus, S. melanoleucus, S. tyrannus) are threatened and little is known of many aspects of their biology, such habitat requirements, nesting behavior, and food habitats. Here I present data about the breeding biology, diet and behavior of the Ornate Hawk-Eagle (S. ornatus; OHE) and the Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle (S. melanoleucus; BWHW), and estimations of distribution - extent of occurrence (EOO) - and population sizes for the three hawk-eagles of the southern Atlantic Forest. | Dosilia plumosa (Carter, 1849), type species of the genus, and D. brouni (Kirkpatrick, 1906), with distribution respectively in the Oriental and Ethiopic regions, are revised based on a SEM analysis of spicules, gemmules and skeletal structure. The lectotype here designated for D. plumosa is illustrated as well as the holotype by monotypy determined for D. brouni. Dosilia palmeri (Potts, 1885) and D. radiospiculata (Mills, 1888) distributed in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions and D. pydanieli Volkmer-Ribeiro, 1992, found in the Neotropical region, are revised based on a SEM analysis of spicules, gemules and skeletal structure. | The present paper aims to describe the temporal and spatial distribution of the composition and abundance of Decapoda larvae in the shallow waters around Arvoredo Marine Biological Reserve. Stomatopod occurrence is also discussed. Plankton samples were collected at five sites around the Arvoredo Island every two months for one year from May, 2002 to April, 2003. Thirty-nine morphotypes, 11 genus and 4 species (Artemesia longinaris Bate, 1888, Hexapanopeus schmitii Rathbun, 1930, Menippe nodifrons Stimpson, 1859 and Pleoticus muelleri Bate, 1888) were identified, among them only two morphotypes of Stomatopoda larvae, and the remainder Decapoda larvae. | O Pantanal é reconhecido como um importante refúgio da fauna silvestre. Entretanto, apesar de alguns inventários já terem sido realizados no Pantanal, sua fauna de mamíferos ainda é mal conhecida. Apesar de em geral ainda estar bem conservado, o Pantanal já sofre impactos ambientais visíveis, como mudanças no pulso de enchentes, causadas por assoreamento e/ou represamento de rios, e remoção da vegetação arbórea. Estes impactos podem ameaçar a fauna silvestre, e pesquisadores e conservacionistas se preocupam em identificar organismos indicadores da "saúde" deste bioma. | Este trabalho apresenta quatro (4) equações capazes de estimar as precipitações anuais para qualquer ponto do Estado, partindo unicamente de seus parâmetros de localização geográfica. Ajustadas "in situ", elas foram elaboradas para uma área de 460.000 km2 que engloba todo o estado do Piauí e partes dos estados limítrofes, do Maranhão, Ceará, Pernambuco e Bahia. Cada equação tem as variáveis, distância, angulo, altitude, coordenadas cartesianas e suas interações com relação a uma estação de referência. Nas regiões estudadas as equações obtidas permitem uma estimação das precipitações anuais com um desvio médio de aproximadamente 10% para o conjunto das estações estudadas. dadas. |
