UPFLOW model prediction of capillary rise into root zone soil moisture for shallow water table soils of Obio Akpa river floodplain in the Niger-Delta environment, Nigeria. CIGR Journal
Udom, Ikpe Jimmy; Nta, Samuel Akpan.
UPFLOW model was used to provide assessments of capillary rise into root zone soil moisture in shallow water table soils of Obio Akpa river floodplain using drum-culture lysimeters. Soil moisture depletion experiment was undertaken through the use of drums with bases intact and drums with bases removed and sunk in the field at different depths during the dry period with no rainfall and no irrigation. UPFLOW model was validated by comparing simulated capillary soil moisture values from a falling water table with gravimetrically observed data from 0 – 500, 500-1000 and, 1000-1500 mm water table  depth in sandy loam and sandy clay soils. Simulated runs mimic the observed fluctuations and trend of capillary rise to the root zone. The statistical pointers of...

Plant species diversity in a Neotropical wetland: patterns of similarity, effects of distance, and altitude Anais da ABC (AABC)
BAO,FRANCIELLI; LEANDRO,THALES D.; ROCHA,MAÍRA DA; SANTOS,VANESSA S. DOS; STEFANELLO,THIAGO H.; ARRUDA,RAFAEL; POTT,ARNILDO; DAMASCENO-JÚNIOR,GERALDO A..
ABSTRACT The Brazilian Pantanal is an extensive wetland with heterogeneous habitats, primarily due to the river-floodplain system and plants with differential adaptations and reproductive strategies. Factors such as altitude, distance among plant formations, and flood pulse must be considered to better understand its diversity. Aiming to assess the influence of biogeographic patterns in this system, we analyzed the floristic composition of six areas along the Paraguay River, including residual relieves, verifying the pattern of similarity, and effects of distance and altitude. We recorded 356 species in 87 families, mostly perennial (75%), and some annuals (15%) and pluriannuals (5%). Herbaceous plants were the most represented (48%), followed by arboreal...

The effect of seasonality on the structure of rotifers in a black-water shallow lake in Central Amazonia Anais da ABC (AABC)
NOVA,CLARICE C.; LOPES,VANESSA G.; SOUZA,LEONARDO COIMBRA E; KOZLOWSKY-SUZUKI,BETINA; PEREIRA,TALITA A.A.; BRANCO,CHRISTINA W.C..
Rotifers have often been used as indicators of sudden changes in physical and chemical features of the aquatic environment. Such features vary greatly during flood pulse events in small lakes connected to major floodplains. However, few are the studies that investigate the consequences of the flood pulse in rotifer species composition, abundance, richness and diversity, especially in Amazonian lakes. We analyzed samples from a small blackwater lake of an “igarapé” connected permanently to the Negro river, in Central Amazonia. Samples were taken twice a year for two years, comprising flooding and receding periods of the flood pulse. Rotifer abundance increased significantly after draught events, and electrical conductivity and turbidity were intrinsically...

Amphibians of varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River, Amazonas, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Ramalho,Werther Pereira; Andrade,Murilo Sousa; Matos,Lucicléia Railene Assis de; Vieira,Lisandro Juno Soares.
Despite the historical knowledge on amphibians of the Purus River basin, basic information on assemblages is fragmented, with gaps in knowledge existing at various scales, which limits conservation strategies. This study provides information on the composition, richness and abundance of the amphibian fauna in varzea environments and floating meadows of the oxbow lakes of the Middle Purus River between the Boca do Acre and Pauiní municipalities, Amazonas, Brazil. We sampled six oxbow lakes using forty-seven 200-meter transects, distributed among the "floating meadows," "high varzea" and "low varzea," from April to January 2014. We recorded 59 species, with the family Hylidae being predominant. This amphibian fauna represents approximately 19% of the species...

An ordination technique for fish diet comparisons BABT
Penczak,Tadeusz; Agostinho,Angelo A.; Hahn,Norma S..
The frequency of nine food types in the guts of 58 fish species from the Paraná River and its floodplain was compared using similarity definition. A synthetic table ordered on the basis of this definition, with fish species on axis y, and food types on axis x, enabled easy reading numerous kinds of information on feeding ecology of fish in the catchment. For example: 1) which fish species were generalists, specialists or opportunists, 2) those classified as herbivorous species consumed small amounts of animal food, 3) that fish consumed any food type that contained transformed solar energy and matter, 4) what are food preferences dependent on fish taxonomic affinity. The possibility of employing synthetic tables for investigating spatial and temporal...

Arboreous vegetation of an alluvial riparian forest and their soil relations: Porto Rico island, Paraná river, Brazil BABT
Campos,João Batista; Souza,Maria Conceição de.
The dynamics of alluvial deposits in floodplains forms islands and sandbanks. Deposits frequently accumulate at the river margins and on islands with consequent side growths. One of these sandbanks which started to form in 1952 annexed an area of 12.4ha to the Porto Rico island (53º15’W and 22º45’S). At present a forest fragment of approximately 2.0 ha exists in this place. The structural analysis of arboreous vegetation of this fragment showed a floristic gradient related to the physical and chemical variations of the substratum. High density of pioneer species associated to the absence of recruitment of new individuals of these and other successional categories indicated that the forest was impaired in its succession process. This fact could be...

Spatial and multi-temporal analysis of deforestation and quantification of the remnant forests on Porto Rico Island, Paraná, Brazil BABT
Campos,João Batista.
The process of land occupation by the state of Paraná practically decimated its forests. Presently, only 7% from a total area of 83.41% is covered by forests. Most of them are now concentrated in the "Serra do Mar" and in the Iguaçu National Park. With regard to forest cover the most critical region is situated in the northwestern of the state with less than 1% of its area covered by forest. This restricted area mainly consists of conservation units and the islands of the high Paraná River floodplain. The present study consists of a spatial and multi-temporal analysis of deforestation and the quantification of the remnant forests on Porto Rico island (22º45'S; 53º15'W), which have their occupation history linked to the colonization process of the region....

Seasonal fluctuation of some limnological variables on a floodplain lake (Patos lagoon) of the Upper Paraná River, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil BABT
Rodrigues,Luzia Cleide; Train,Sueli; Roberto,Maria do Carmo; Pagioro,Thomaz Aurélio.
Temporal variations of some limnological variables in limnetic and littoral regions of Patos lagoon, a "várzea" lake on the floodplain of the Upper Paraná River (22(0) 43'12"S e 53(0) 17'37"W), were studied in relation to hydrological and climatological factors. Measurements of water temperature, euphotic zone, suspended material, electrical conductivity, total alkalinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, total nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus, reactive soluble phosphorus and chlorophyll a were taken monthly between March 1993 and February 1994. Results lend evidence to the importance of the hydrological regime on the dynamic of limnological variables in floodplain lakes. A dilution of nutrients in the lagoon,...

Planktonic and non-planktonic rotifers in two environments of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil BABT
Bonecker,Cláudia C.; Lansac-Tôha,Fábio A.; Rossa,Dayane C..
Investigations were carried out for the composition and occurrence of rotifer taxa of different forms and sizes during two distinct hydrological periods, in two environments (river and lake). Two sampling stations were established in open water of each environments. Surface samples were taken daily for 14 days. The faunistic similarity between the environments was established using Jaccard's index. One hundred and fourty three taxa were identified. The largest number of taxa was recorded in the river. Faunistic similarity between these environments was greater during high water. The planktonic taxa predominated and the difference for the non-planktonic ones was not marked. Non-planktonic taxa predominated in the river, while both types were numerous in the...

Potencial for natural forest regeneration from seed bank in an upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil BABT
Campos,João Batista; Souza,Maria Conceição de.
The historical process of deforestation was analyzed to evaluate the regeneration potential of forests from soil seed bank of Porto Rico island (53° 15'W and 22° 45'S) in the upper Paraná river floodplain. Remnant forest fragments were identified and measured and the structure of arboreous vegetation and the composition of the seed bank of the forests and grassland of the island were evaluated. Results showed a fast process of deforestation with critical levels of forest: the remaining twice fragments represented only 5.98% of the total surface of the island. Disturbance by cattle raised on the island continuously degraded the fragments (backward succession), while expansion of areas with pasture favored severe impoverishment of the seed banks flora. The...

Quantitative analysis of foraging habitat use by ciconiiformes in the upper Paraná river Floodplain, Brazil BABT
Gimenes,Márcio Rodrigo; Anjos,Luiz dos.
The aim of this study was to analyze the seasonal variations in habitat selection and abundance of Ciconiiformes species in four foraging habitats (rivers, channels, connected and disconnected lagoons) on the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, and to conduct the surveys of wading birds in 2002 and 2003. The largest number of species and highest abundances of most species were observed in the connected lagoons. Snowy Egrets (Egretta thula), Wood Storks (Mycteria americana), Roseate Spoonbills (Platalea ajaja), and Jabirus (Jabiru mycteria) frequently used connected lagoons (habitat with the highest fish abundance) and abandoned the areas during floods, suggesting that they were able to find high quality patches for foraging. Cocoi Herons (Ardea cocoi),...

Abundance of cladocerans in the littoral regions of two environments of the Upper Paraná River floodplain, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil BJB
ROSSA,D. C.; LANSAC-TÔHA,F. A.; BONECKER,C. C.; VELHO,L. F. M..
The abundance of cladocerans recorded in plankton samples from the littoral regions of two enviroments (Baía River and Guaraná lake), the Upper Paraná River floodplain and some limnological variables important in controlling their abundance were investigated at three sites in the lake and two in the river, from March/93 to January/94. Abundance was highest in the lake, chiefly during high water. Bosminidae dominated in both environments and hydrological periods (high and low water). Chydoridae were more important in the lake, and Sididae in the river. A higher number of Pearson's correlations significative (p < 0.03) between the densities of the ten most important species and the limnological variables was observed in the river. This suggests that...

Loss of weight and concentration of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus during decomposition of Eichhornia azurea in the floodplain of the upper Paraná river, Brazil BJB
PAGIORO,T. A.; THOMAZ,S. M..
Leaf packs of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea were used to experimentally evaluate changes in mass, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations, and C:N ratios during initial stages of decomposition in two different environments, the Paraná River and Garças Lake. Analysis of weight loss showed relatively slow decomposition rates in both environments (0.0047 d-1 and 0.0048 d-1 respectively). Over a 45-day period we observed significant changes (p < 0.05) in concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus, but only carbon differed between the environments (F = 10.479; p = 0.03). Therefore we concluded that detritus behaved similarly during decomposition, since intrinsic characteristics of the environments affected only the carbon...

Microbial respiration and chemical composition of different sediment fractions in waterbodies of the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil BJB
THOMAZ,S. M.; PEREIRA,G.; PAGIORO,T. A..
Four size fractions of the sediment of six environments of the upper Paraná River floodplain were analyzed for carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents and microbial respiration (oxygen consumption). Particle size did not affect nitrogen and phosphorus content or microbial activity, but did affect carbon content (F = 4.274, df = 3; 20, p = 0.020). The carbon concentration of ultra-fine particles was significantly lower than that of other sizes of sediment particles. Microbial respiration values were well predicted by sediment chemical composition, as shown by multiple regression (microbial respiration = -0.39 - 0.210C + 0.108N + 0.796P; F = 7.0495, p = 0.0022). However, phosphorus was the element which best explained the microbial respiration (partial...
