A key motivation behind this study is to explore the many patterns of interactions between economic and non-economic factors in sub-Saharan Africa (hereafter referred to as Africa) in order to map out a typology of different types of country situations and thus, corresponding future options to develop strategies to end hunger and poverty in the region. The study builds on the earlier work of Irma Adelman and Cynthia Morris who argued that economic development is a dynamic, multi-faceted, nonlinear, and malleable process, a process explained by the many complex interactions between social, economic, political and institutional changes. This paper measures impacts of production of crops, forestry, livestock and aquaculture on household welfare, poverty and inequality in rural Vietnam using fixed-effects regressions. Data used in this paper are from Vietnam Household Living Standard Surveys 2002 and 2004. It is found that impact estimates of the production of crops and forestry on per capita income and consumption expenditure are not statistically significant. Impact estimates of the livestock production are positive and statistically significant for per capita income, but not statistically significant for per capita expenditure. There is a common perception that healthy food costs more than less healthy food. In this study we use a demand model for diet quality, rather than the quantity of food. Since in our data, total daily cost and diet quality are both calculated from the foods chosen, we account for the fact that cost is endogenous. We find that while total daily food cost is statistically significant in relation to diet quality, the degree of association is very small. Hence, it does not appear that cost alone prevents individuals in the United States from purchasing a healthy diet. Other factors such as food culture and environment, health behaviours, and demographics are more important. Our findings suggest that the choice to consume a healthy diet is very complicated. |

Afiatalkorúak célcsoportja a piac leginkább befolyásolható szegmensét jelenti. Kutatásaink szerint a fiatalok fele nem fordít különösebb figyelmet az egészséges táplálkozásra, s a fiataloknak csupán egyharmada érti az élelmiszercímke jelöléseit. Súlyosbítja a helyzetet, hogy magas zsír-, só-, cukortartalmú élelmiszereket (például gyorséttermi láncok termékei, kóla, chips) népszerűsítenek. Ahazai élelmiszercímke-szabályozásban mindenképpen célszerű figyelembe venni más országok gyakorlatát, különös tekintettel az Egyesült Államok élelmiszercímkéire, valamint a Magyar Nemzeti Szívalapítvány elképzeléseire. This paper analyzes the roles of agriculture in reducing poverty. Following the methodology proposed by Lopez (2002), three channels by which agricultural growth reduces poverty are tested: (i) its effects on the real wage of unskilled workers (and/or its possible effect in reducing their unemployment); (ii) the direct impact of agricultural growth on the income of poor farmers; and, (iii) the effect on real food prices. The paper concludes that the pro-poor role of agricultural expansion is dramatic. Agricultural growth tends to improve all measures of poverty significantly with head count falling around 7.3% as a consequence of a 4.5% increase in agricultural output. A shopping-habits survey was completed at selected California WIC clinic sites. Although the survey was given to WIC program participants from all racial or ethnic groups, tests revealed that a representative sample was obtained only from members of the Hispanic population, who make up the largest ethnic group served by the California WIC Program. Consequently, the study presented herein is restricted to the shopping habits of Hispanic California WIC Program participants.
