Russian Agricultural and Food Sector in Transition AgEcon
Virolainen, Meri.
This paper examines current situation in Russian agricultural and food sector and evaluates forthcoming development. Russia's agricultural production diminished by half at the beginning of the 1990s, and since that the production has hardly grown. In fact, Russia is one of the biggest food importers in the world. Particularly in livestock sector the situation is difficult. Number of livestock has not grown according to expectations and production does not satisfy domestic demand. Crop husbandry, by contrast, has export potential, but fluctuations in export volumes have been great. Furthermore, quality of grain has not always met standards. Russia's food industry has grown rapidly in the past few years, even though Russia has not reached self-sufficiency....

Agribusiness Firm Reactions to Regulations: The Case of Investments in Traceability Systems AgEcon
Heyder, Matthias; Hollmann-Hespos, Thorsten; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
The regulatory framework of food production has changed a lot in recent years. As a result, traceability of food products as become mandatory in the European Union, nonetheless leaving room for more advanced solutions. This study answers the question what exactly determines firms’ investments in traceability systems by first developing a theoretical framework—the so‐called Tracking and Tracing Systems Investment Model—and then analyzing empirical data from the German food industry that provide in‐depth insights into companies’ investment behaviour. Altogether, 234 companies representing more than fifteen different sub‐sectors of the food‐processing industry participated in an online survey. The results show that German food firms can be divided into four...

Success Factors of Digital Markets in the Agricultural and Food Industry AgEcon
Clasen, Michael.
In this paper hypotheses concerning the success of digital market places for agricultural inputs and products are tested. The hypotheses were derived from transaction cost considerations. Success of digital market places was measured in two ways: (i) the probability for a digital marketplace to survive the competition from conventional and other digital market places and (ii) various metrics of market activity such as the number of hits received, number of incoming links, and page views per visitor session. Data were obtained from a survey of 233 digital market places that had been installed to serve the agricultural and food industries.

Food Innovation and Market Risk: A Case Study of the Interface Consumer Food Industry AgEcon
Briz, Julian; de Carlos, Pilar; de Felipe, Isabel; Garcia Martinez, Marian; Morais, Federico.
Western society is suffering an increasing risk regarding the food chain for several reasons. Longer geographical distances between producers and consumers, more stakeholders in the supply chain, less capacity of national governments to regulate and protect consumers due to globalisation and the liberalization process, with pressure to innovate and increase competitively.. During the period 2004-06, there is being carried out a research project in Spain, coordinated by the Polytechnic University of Madrid and sponsored by INIA. The goal is to understand the consumer behaviour identifying the attributes of food products and to transmit the results to the food industry entrepreneurs, in order to increase their efficiency in innovation.

Co-innovation: what are the success factors? AgEcon
Bremmers, Harry J.; Sabidussi, Anna.
The problem we address in this paper is that in projects focusing on public-private cooperation to stimulate innovation in the Netherlands, initiatives often lack continuation after the study-phase. We extracted possible influencing variables from business and (transaction) cost economic theorizing, stakeholder and capability theory. Moreover, we used measures for classifying projects with respect to financial interdependencies between participants. We supposed that project characteristics influence managerial behavior to continue or stop. We studied 28 projects (20 supply chain projects and 8 biological product development projects). Our aim was to explore the barriers and success factors for these co-innovation projects: innovation as a cooperative...

New Product Development in Thai Agro-Industry: Explaining the Rates of Innovation and Success in Innovation AgEcon
Dhamvithee, Pisit; Shankar, Bhavani; Jangchud, Anuvat; Wuttijumnong, Phaisarn.
The Thai food industry is amongst the most dynamic and diverse in the world. Continual innovation in the form of new product development is critical to this industry, and yet new products are more likely to fail than succeed. In this paper,we investigate factors explaining both the rate of new product development as well as the rate of success in products newly introduced into the market, using data from a survey of firms. The methodology involves a Poisson regression to investigate the determinants of innovation and a Least Squares regression to explain success rates in innovation.

The effect of the foreign capital and European subventions on the competitiveness of the Hungarian agribusiness’ enterprises in the last 15 years AgEcon
Karolyne Zdenko, Ildiko; Illes B., Csaba; Pataki, Laszlo; Kozma, Timea.
In our research we examine the foreign investments from the change of regime, privatization; EU accession, possibilities offered by subventions (2004-2006); so the experiences of the last 15 years, and we draw up the expectations from the actual New Hungary Rural Development and National Diversification Programs (2007-13). We try to establish a complex diagnosis about the role, effect and results of the foreign capital and EU subsidies – by analyzing advantages, disadvantages; positive, negative effects – in order to chart the problems to be avoided and missions to be reinforced – at the company and at the sector level – like structural reorganization of sectors, or necessity of developing company structures which contribute to identify the key necessary...

Quantification of browning kinetics and colour change for quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) exposed to atmospheric conditions CIGR Journal
Guiné, Raquel P.F.; Barroca, Maria João.
Because quince is a fruit that shows a very strong tendency for developing an intense browning when exposed to air, even though for short periods of time, the aim of this work was to evaluate the kinetics of colour change for quince exposed to atmospheric air at ambient temperature over a period of 2 hours. The quince was cut into slices that were left exposed to air, and colour measurements were done right after cutting and every five minutes, using a tristimulus colorimeter measuring the CIELab coordinates, L*, a* and b*. The results confirmed that quince suffers a high degree of browning, with total colour difference increasing strongly from 0 to 30 and browning index increasing from 50 to near 140. Furthermore, the major colour changes occurred during...

Evaluation antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the antimicrobial peptide P34 against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis Anais da ABC (AABC)
COSTA,GÉSSICA A.; ROSSATTO,FERNANDA C.P.; MEDEIROS,ALINE W.; CORREA,ANA PAULA F.; BRANDELLI,ADRIANO; FRAZZON,ANA PAULA G.; MOTTA,AMANDA DE S. DA.
ABSTRACT The adhesion ability of bacteria to abiotic surfaces has important implications in food industries, because these organisms can survive for long periods through the biofilm formation. They can be transferred from one place to another in the industry causing contamination of the food processing environment. In this study, the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the antimicrobial peptide P34, characterized as a bacteriocin-like substance (BLS P34) were tested against planktonic and sessile cells of Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis isolated from foods. The BLS P34 showed inhibitory effect against all planktonic cells of E. faecalis. The inhibition of biofilm formation and the eradication of pre-formed biofilm were evaluated...

ATP - bioluminescence as a technique to evaluate the microbiological quality of water in food industry BABT
Costa,Patrícia Dolabela; Andrade,Nélio José de; Passos,Frederico José Vieira; Brandão,Sebastião César Cardoso; Rodrigues,Carolina Gonçalves Freire.
ATP-bioluminescence was used to evaluate the microbiological quality of water samples collected from the water supply, the water treatment system and from a dairy plant, including ammonia-cooling water and industrial water. For industrial water, there was relation between the ATP-bioluminescence technique and microbial count. There were no differences (p>0.05) between water supply and ammonia-cooling water samples for total and free ATP concentrations nor for the microbial counts. Different microbial ATP concentrations were found for these water samples. The results suggested that the physical chemical quality of ammonia cooling water decreased the RLU measurements slightly. It could be concluded that the total ATP concentration was the most effective...

Cano Estrada,Araceli; Vélez Díaz,Daniel; Morgado Hernández,Carlos Alberto.
Over the past several decades, technological developments and modernization have grown concomitantly. For example, advances in biotechnology have been used as a tool to increase food production. Specifically, advances in genetic engineering have made possible the manipulation of crops to increase yield, guaranteeing food supplies for the increasing world population. However, transgenic crops have not been well received by all members of society, and there is still uncertainty about their social benefits and the possible implications to human health. Additionally, the benefits of agricultural modernization have favored only developed countries, whereas people living in developing and underdeveloped countries suffer rampant hunger, malnutrition and poverty....
